Libya hosts African volleyball championship

Libya is making a bold return to African sports with the 46th African Men’s Volleyball Clubs Championship currently underway in Misrata. The event brings together 23 clubs from nine African nations, including Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, and Kenya and showcases not only athletic talent but also a nation on the path to renewal.

Held in the refurbished Misrata International Sports Hall, the championship is backed by more than 1,500 security and medical personnel, ensuring a smooth and safe experience. Jean-Claude Maupita, President of the Control Committee, praised Libya’s effort, saying, “The organization is very good. The level of play is also impressive.”

For local fans, it’s more than sport, it’s pride. “My son and I came early to support our team,” one supporter said. Libya is also setting its sights on the Arab Volleyball Championship in 2026, a further step in rebuilding its image and regional ties.

As teams compete, Libya sends a clear message: it’s back — stronger, safer, and ready to lead again.

Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger to have access to the Atlantic ocean

The landlocked countries of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have endorsed an initiative by Morocco to give them access to the Atlantic Ocean, the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The foreign ministers of the three military-ruled West African nations shared their countries positions during a meeting Monday with King Mohammed VI in Rabat, the capital of Morocco, according to a ministry statement.

The three-nation block of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger announced last year that they were leaving the regional bloc known as ECOWAS. They then created their own security partnership, known as the Alliance of Sahel States, severed military ties with longstanding Western partners such as U.S. and France, and turned to Russia for military support.

In December 2023, Morocco announced a trade initiative to facilitate Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger’s access to the Atlantic Ocean using Moroccan ports after ECOWAS imposed trade restrictions on the the three junta-led countries.

The foreign ministers of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger reaffirmed their “full support for and commitment to accelerating its implementation,” during the royal meeting, the ministry said. The meeting comes at a time of growing tensions between Morocco’s regional rival Algeria and the Sahel states. Last month, Algeria says it shot down a Malian drone when it crossed into its air space near the border town of Tin Zaouatine. Mali denied the drone crossed the border.

African Union denounces Trump’s ‘shithole Countries’ Remarks

The African Union, an organization comprised of all 55 African nations, blasted US President Donald Trump’s comments that the continent contained “shithole countries.”

“The African Union Mission wishes to express its infuriation, disappointment and outrage over the unfortunate comment made by Mr. Donald Trump, the President of the United States of America, which remarks dishonor the celebrated American creed and respect for diversity and human dignity,” the union said in a statement.

The response came after Trump told a bipartisan meeting of senators that the immigration system should be changed to allow fewer people from “shithole countries” during a discussion about Haiti, El Salvador, and African nations.

The union also demanded that Trump formally retract the statement and deliver “an apology not only to the Africans but to all people of African descent around the globe.”

The statement from the African Union also followed a slew of international condemnations. Some countries, such as Botswana, demanding the president apologize for his remark.

Union that represents entire continent of Africa blasts Trump for ‘shithole countries’ comment

The African Union said in its statement that while it condemn Trump’s remark, maintaining a dialogue with the president was necessary to help him better understand their continent.

“While expressing our shock, dismay and outrage, the African Union strongly believes that there is a huge misunderstanding of the African continent and its people by the current administration,” the statement said. “There is a serious need for dialogue between the US administration and the African countries.”

The White House did not initially deny the remark on Thursday, but Trump suggested in a tweet Friday that the “shithole” comment was “not the language used.” Multiple senators of both parties confirmed or suggested Friday that Trump used those words.
