Education is a humanitarian cause -APM

President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika Wednesday morning joined a high level delegation at the UN General Assembly in discussing the alarming education crisis that has left close to 264 million children and adolescents out of school.

Mutharika, together with leaders of Norway, France, Senegal co-hosted the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) event focused on Sustainable Development Goal Four on quality education with the theme “Financing the Future: Education 2030.”

During his statement, President Mutharika stressed on the importance of education to human existence and the planet we live in.

“Our ability to improve the living conditions of mankind depends on the quality of decisions we make.
These decisions and choices also depend on the access and quality of education given to individuals,” Mutharika said.

He added that the ability to protect the planet we live on also depends on our ability to understanding contemporary complexities and fragilities of human existence.

The Malawi leader pointed out that the prevailing global mindset of taking education more as a service to the people than as an investment and humanitarian cause has done little in uplifting education standards in many parts of the world.

“We left the funding of education to individual countries as their responsibility to provide services to their people. We need to take the education of all children of the world as a common responsibility of our global community,” Mutharika said.

He expressed hope that the GPE would change the current situation for the better because its progress shows that the “dream to educate all children is possible.”

Mutharika then called upon all partners to support replenishment efforts for GPE in ensuring that access to education reach as many children as possible.

Norwegian Prime Minister, Erna Solberg, French President Emmanuel Macron and Senegalese President Macky Sall also delivered their statements on GPE.

The meeting, which was chaired by UN Special Envoy for Global Education and Former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, also showcased success stories of country-led initiatives with increased domestic resource mobilization towards education.

The UN Secretary General, António Guterres and his deputy Amina Muhammad were also part of the high level delegation that attended the meeting.

MCC meets President Mutharika, says power project deadline remains intact

The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) says it remains optimistic in its set target of completing the compact program in Malawi’s power sector by September next year.

MCC is implementing a US$ 350 million program in boosting the country’s power sector by paving way for business investment in the sector.

Speaking on Monday after having an audience with Malawi’s President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika in New York, MCC Acting Chief Executive Officer, Jonathan Nash said deadline for completion for the compact program remains intact.

“The Malawi government has made tremendous success ad progress. We have one year left and there is a lot of work to be done,” Nash said.

Asked on what would follow for Malawi after the completion of this five-year programme, the MCC top boss could not say much than expressing hope for the successful completion of the initiative which is valued at MK2 billion.

“There is deep commitment from both parties to successfully finish this program in time,” he said.

MCC is supporting Malawi government in identification and prioritization of investments in the power sector in order to increase the capacity and stability of the national electricity grid.

The Government of Malawi intends to utilize the program by investing in new power generation capacity through, by among other things, completing the construction of the Kapichira II hydropower plant, rehabilitation of Nkula hydropower plant as well as installation of transmission and distribution lines.

The five year MCC-Malawi Compact Programme started in September 2013.

The audience Prof. Mutharika had the MCC chief was one of several side events the Malawi leader was set to have during this year’s United Nations General Assembly in New York.

APM appoints Nyakwawa Usiwa-Usiwa as High Court Judge

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)–President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has appointed His Honour Nyakwawa Usiwa-Usiwa as a Judge of the High Court.

This has been disclosed in a Press Statement released on Wednesday signed by Chief Secretary to the President George Mkondiwa seen made available to Maravi Post.

Malawi Judges

According to Mkondiwa, the appointment is with immediate effect.

“The President of the Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by section 111 sub section (2) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi, has appointed His Honour Nyakwawa Usiwa-Usiwa as a Judge of the High Court,” reads in part the statement.

Meanwhile some quarters have described the appointment of Usiwausiwa as replacement for Justice George Bakuwa who died while on duty in Zambia last month.

In October this year, the president appointed four new judges, namely Joseph Chigona, Ruth Chinangwa, Dorothy De Gabrielle and George Bakuwa, who died while on duty in Zambia last month, barely a month after his appointment.

Usiwa-Usiwa’s appointment bring the number of newly appointed judges back to four and comes after Judiciary has just deployed the three Judges earlier appointed to three of its four registries.

Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu registries benefited from the deployment while the Zomba registry is yet to get a judge.

Recently, Judiciary Spokesperson Mlenga Mvula said initially government planned to deploy one judge to each registry, but Zomba did not benefit because of Bakuwa’s death.

However, Mvula in an interview with the Nation could not say whether the appointment of Usiwa-Usiwa means the Zomba registry has now a judge, saying: “It is the Chief Justice who has the prerogative to decide, it’s not that automatic.”
