Let’s call it witch hunt because APM was really bewitched

APM’s bodyguard Norman Chisale became a billionaire soon after entering the state house

As our struggle for better Malawi continues, the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) officials are finding it harder to keep the secrets about the plunder and looting of public resources that characterized the Peter Mutharika led administration.

The struggle has now culminated into what we can call an economic apocalypse in Malawi. For many religious people, the word apocalypse is often used to refer to the end of the world. This is not the type of apocalypse I am referring to. The word apocalypse comes from the Greek word meaning “lifting of the veil.” It is a term applied to the disclosure of something hidden from the majority of humankind. Simply said, apocalypse means “secrets are being revealed.”

Forcefully, former President Bingu Wa Mutharika (may his soul rest in peace) challenged donors in his pursuit of policies he thought were a long term solution to Malawi’s problems. He championed policies and initiatives like the Farm Input Subsidy Programme (FISP) and free ARVs for HIV/AIDS patients. In the eyes of donors, this was a nonstarter but Bingu stood to his ground and implemented them. Perhaps he knew that Malawi can survive without donor money as that money has been going into politicians’ pockets while Malawians scramble for the few resources available in the country.

However, the visionary leader in Bingu was not maintained, and at the time of his demise, his presidency was widely criticized both at home and abroad. He performed extremely well in his first term but goofed big time in second term. The question is why? My immediate answer is that in second term he surrounded himself with ‘witches.’ He was bewitched so much that he started betraying his conscience. And the coming in of Calista Chimombo as the first lady was just an evidence for the weakness of women, and their capacity to be “seduced” by Satan, as it is grounded in the story of Eve in the Garden of Eden. Surely, referring to Calista as a former first lady is not only a misnomer but also an insult to Malawians who witnessed in pain the transformation of Bingu from good to worse immediately after marrying her.

Bingu WA Mutharika
Late Bingu Wa Mutharika: is remembered for performing extremely well during his first term

Enough of the legend Bingu! After all he is dead, and it’s foolhardy to attribute our misery to our ancestors. We are alive for a purpose: to correct what went wrong and to perk up the goodies.

While the witches spared Bingu in his first term, his brother Arthur Peter Mutharika (APM) was bewitched from the word go. Revelations of plunder and looting of public resources that took place under APM’s watch have left many, if not all, Malawians dumbfounded.  For the first time in the history of Malawi, we have a bodyguard to the President who is stinking rich. It appears the wealth Norman Chisale has accumulated within six years is far beyond any DPP official’s reach. He must thank the charm he used to kill the real ‘Americano’ in APM.

Now, those who have been saying APM anayikidwa m’botolo can say it again and again if the press statement from the former president released on Friday is anything to go by.

For starters, revelations have it that Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) gave Mutharika the clearance to make the duty-free cement importations in three tranches, each of the consignment valued at $2.240 million bringing the total cost of the three consignments to $6.720 million (about K5.040 billion). It is further alleged that MRA officials and other top DPP gurus used Mutharikas TPN to import different duty-free goods into the country.

His bodyguard Norman Chisale, MRA boss Rosa Mbilizi and Inidan businessperson have already been linked to the nasty deal.

It is quite strange to hear that the former leader does not know anything concerning the cement importation saga.

“Accordingly, the former President did not, as he could not, request the Malawi Revenue Authority to invoke any of his privileges to clear the alleged consignment of cement duty- free,” Mutharika said in statement released by his personal secretary Linda Salanjira on Friday.

With such statements, Malawians must be worried. To say he was sleeping on duty is more polite to such a reckless president. But for the lack of proper description let me just join the bandwagon, APM anayikidwa m’botolo; and impeccable sources indicate that no one—the DPP top gurus, strategists inclusive—could meet APM in the absence of Norman Chisale and Getrude Mutharika. It was only late Chief Ngolongoliwa who could demand the absence of the two.

Former Malawi President Peter Mutharika

APM was really under the influence of roots. How could a bodyguard swim in such unspeakable wealth without him raising a concern? How a little-known trader Shafee Ahmed Chunara could ensnare him? How Rosa Mbilizi could find the opportunity to enjoy the privileges of the president by importing duty-free goods? How could his DPP officials establish a filling station at Escom without his knowledge? It is very unfortunate, and a clear demonstration that Malawi has been on autopilot the past six years. No wonder good-for-nothing Charles Mchacha also found room to wild powers not befitting his foggy brain intoxicated with nasty politics.

But like the Bingu’s scenario, women are also behind APM’s gross incompetence. As I’m writing, three beautiful ladies are answering charges in connection with dubious deals that were being done using the president’s name. Thus, I’m safe to ascertain that women are more prone to the temptations of Satan and thus more likely to be witches. Our own Professor of Law was really bewitched and it is the incredible responsibility of the incumbent Lazarus Chakwera and his deputy Saulos Chilima to hunt for the witches before they too fall victim to the occult.

Arresting state looters and plunders is not a witch hunt as per the leader of opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa’s definition of it. DPP has no moral ground to label the Tonse Alliance government as the inquisitor and persecutor of innocent individuals. In fact, they have to pay Chakwera and Chilima for cleansing their party by getting rid of witches, a service which could call for a great Dibia beyond the borders.

Msaka And DPP Eastern Region Team Give APM A Courtesy Call

MSAKA AND DPP EASTERN REGION TEAM GIVE APM A COURTESY CALL

On July 22, 2020, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) eastern region Politburo led by its  Vice President Rt. Hon Bright Msaka S.C became the first team to visit the immediate past president of the Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika who is also the current leader of the DPP.

The regional leaders gave the president this courtesy call to welcome him in the eastern region and make him feel at home in Mangochi where he has settled soon after the June 23, 2020 fresh presidential elections

Speaking to reporters just after  meeting APM, Msaka added that he led the team also to thank the former president for support and  development works he did across Malawi and in the eastern region to be specific which made the party to have strong following.

On the future of DPP, the eastern region leader assured Malawians that the DPP will never Collapse as it is the only largest Party in Malawi. He also assured party supporters that APM has renewed his commitment to supporting the Party to the last drop such that he will see the DPP bouncing back into government in 2025.

The VP east also Challenged doubting Thomas’s on the strengths of the DPP to go round the 28 districts of Malawi and see how  what has just happened has buoyed the grassroots to be more resolute to building the party and win again in the next election.

Prior to meeting the President, Msaka met party structures where he assured them of his continued support towards rebuilding and continual enjoyment of APM strong brand across.

Apart from the Vice President, the entourage included:  MPs from the eastern region, National Governing Council Members, Regional Members and District Governors.

Bakili Muluzi confident his son and APM will prevail, says he is getting ready for inauguration ceremony

Bakili Muluzi votes for DPP/UDF alliance 06/23/2020 – Humility is the best weapon against pride

Malawians continue to wait for the final results of the judiciary mandated Presidential do-over that international observers including our regional friends like SADC shirked.

One man however, former Malawi President, Bakili Muluzi is sure DPP/UDF alliance will prevail and is already getting ready for inauguration ceremony.

Bakili Muluzi who voted said, humility is the best weapon against pride. I stood there as a normal human not as the former head of state. Unlike our friends the former VPs and presidents who anywhere they go, soldiers and people being pushed around them everywhere!

Angadziwe ndani kuti akuluakulu Aja adagwetsa congolesi Aja ali pa Mizere pomwepo?

Getting ready for inauguration ceremony!

DPP supporters believe Malawians Will once again deliver real Justice for APM

Atupele Campaigning

Malawi opposition parties and their fellow conspirators in courts and CSO’s are busy harassing MEC commissioners.

The MEC commissioners are being crucified by a grand conspiracy who want to grab power through the backdoor.

DPP supporters believe, the commissioners are being abused by a bunch of failures who always want to blame others for their perennial failure.

They believe opposition and the courts have failed to find that the irregularities affected the election result.

They have tried all they could, and they have failed to prove it.

They say and believe that, the commissioners did not make anyone win or lose the election. It is Malawian voters who did.

They believe most Malawians will vote for APM again, this time in large numbers to shame the opposition who they call the devil.

They implore Malawians are not fooled they know, APM won the elections. They claim opposition knows and agree with this fact.

They point to the fact that social media is full of figures and percentages of the results of the nullified elections.

This means that if people are adding 20% of Chilima and 35% of Chakwera to make 55% and 38% of APM and 4% of Atupele to make 42% this clearly show that the opposition are conceding APM won such that the figures are correct.

You cannot be using figures which were rejected as false and nullified and convince yourself that you will win the fresh elections yet were not true figures.

Let us agree that APM and DPP are being robed their victory via a judicial coup.

Malawians of good will let us stand and show them that they cannot fault and insult our intelligence with their jealousy by voting the DPP/UDF alliance on 2 July.

APM reminds Concourt Judges about impartial justice during swearing in ceremony of New High Court Judges

Mutharika Swearing in of new High Court judges which took place Thursday 9th April at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre

ATLANTA, MaraviPost: Following the February 3rd Judgement against his second term, Malawi President Peter Mutharika has made it known the Judgement by Potani and his 4 ConCourt judges was flawed and lacked legal reasoning and legal justification.

So while swearing in new High court Judges the Malawi President who is an international legal scholar of high reputation  took the opportunity to remind justices Healey Potani, Mike Tembo, Dingiswayo Madise, Ivy Kamanga and Redson Kapindu of their oath which they failed to upheld in the eyes of the President and his millions of supporters in the country.

In his speech at the ceremony Mutharika opened by saying he was delighted that we have added three judges to the High Court today. Congratulations to the three new judges!

The three new judges bring the number of Justices serving in the High Court to thirty-seven (37).

While we can say the number of judges is growing, the figure remains small and inadequate, considering the demand for judiciary services and the need for the judiciary to expedite delivery of judgments.

It is my expectation that the new judges will help the judiciary to meet people’s expectations.

Malawians have a lot of expectations from the judiciary. These expectations are embodied in the Judiciary’s own vision and core values.

The vision of the Judiciary is expeditious and impartial justice; and the core values of the judiciary are:

1. Integrity
2. Transparency
3.Accountability
4. Responsiveness
5. Teamwork
6. Professionalism.

On our own promise to the people as carried in these values, Malawians expect our judiciary to be a place of unquestionably high integrity and professionalism.

I always find my inspiration from the Bible. In 2 Chronicles, Chapter 19, verses 6 and 7, the Bible says; “Consider carefully what you do, because you are not judging for mere mortals but for the Lord, who is with you whenever you give a verdict. Now let the fear of the Lord be on you. Judge carefully, for with the Lord our God there is no injustice or partiality or bribery.”

And in verse 9, the Bible says: “He gave them these orders: ‘You must serve faithfully and wholeheartedly in the fear of the Lord’.”

I expect you to administer justice with fairness and impartiality.

Malawians expect the judiciary to be transparent. They expect judges to be accountable at all times.

Are we transparent? Are we accountable?

As I have said before, in any good governance, everyone must be accountable to someone else and only God to be accountable to no-one.

The judiciary should be the moral and legal campus of society. This is so because your job is to judge the wrong doings of others.

There are reports of rampant practice of delayed judgement in the judiciary.

The Civil Procedure Rules provide that judgment has to be delivered within 90 days. However, judges are refusing to write judgments such that it takes as long as seven years to deliver justice.

Yet we all know that justice delayed is justice denied.

I know sometimes there is huge workload. I have been a Magistrate before in Dar es Salaam before I joined the academics.

But I urge you to go and serve with commitment.

Even worse is the rising perception of high corruption in the judiciary.

Yet the job of the judges is to judge the corruption of others.

These examples show that there is a lot of work to do to restore public trust in the Judiciary.

I believe in the work of the judiciary myself and I will always support the Judiciary in its efforts to restore public trust.

The judiciary is one of the three arms of government.

As Head of State, I will always respect the independence of the Judiciary in Malawi.

But let it be clear that in any country in the world, the independence of the Judiciary does not mean that the Judiciary is a government in itself.

The Executive, the Judiciary and the Legislature are supposed to work together for the prosperity of Malawians.

The independence of the Judiciary only means that the Judiciary is allowed to judge cases without interference from the other arms of government.

But it does not mean that the Judiciary should not be accountable to anyone.

So, for the Judiciary to enjoy your independence, you also need to exercise strong accountability.

You need a strong internal integrity mechanism that enforces ethical conduct and high discipline among judges and magistrates without bias.

This is the call of the new judges that are taking their Oath of Office today.

You are to uphold the Rule of Law, be impartial, ethical and disciplined.

As a generation of justices, it is your collective responsibility and legacy to correct the image of the judiciary. Your duty as judges is to restore public trust.

Remember that Malawians have a lot to expect from you.

I have appointed you because I have trusted you, and because you have been recommended by your colleagues because they have trusted you.

Do not betray the trust of the people.

Your credentials inspire a lot of expectation.

Justice Chimwemwe Kamowa has over 12 years of experience as a Judicial Officer.

She has worked with the Malawi Judiciary in various capacities. For the last 6 years, she has been Chairperson of the Industrial Relations Court where she has presided over labour and employment matters.

Justice Shadreck Masoamphambe has served as a resident magistrate, rising through the ranks since 2000 before his appointment as a Deputy Registrar of the High Court in 2018.

Justice Jabbar Alide has over 25 years’ experience as Legal Counsel in corporate and commercial law. He has achieved many accomplishments both in the public and private sectors in Malawi.

Each one of you has earned and deserved your appointment. I have confidence in all of you that you will discharge your duties impartially with Patriotism, Integrity and Hard work.

As I conclude, let me say this: In whatever we do today, the international community is watching us.

Malawians are watching us.
Our children are watching us.
Above all, history is watching us.

Thank you for your attention. May God bless you all.

DPP to provide loans to vendors promises APM

President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika in Mzuzu City from Lilongwe Mobbed by Admiring crowds Pics By Malawi News Agency (Mana)

Mzuzu, May 6, 2019: Malawians have been assured of continued development and improved livelihoods if given fresh mandate to run the country for the next five years.

President Peter Mutharika made the assurance Sunday when he addressed whistle-stop political campaign rallies at Mzuzu Main Market, Chiputula, Luwinga Area 1 B Market, Chiwavi Market and Hilltop in Mzuzu City.

Addressing the rallies, Mutharika who is Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) Presidential torch bearer, said his government appreciates the role which vendors play in the development of the country’s economy, hence once given fresh mandate to run the country his government would provide loans to all vendors as one way of improving their livelihoods.

He said vendors are drivers of the country’s economy hence the need for government to support them by providing them with soft loans.

“My government will provide loans to all vendors to boost their businesses in the country. They contribute significantly to the country’s economic development, hence they require financial support in the form of soft loans,” Mutharika pointed out.

Elaborating on how the government will administer the loan scheme, the President said his government through the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning would provide banks with money to be accessed by the vendors.

The President took advantage of the rallies to share his development of Mzuzu City, saying his government would construct an international airport in Mzuzu as the current airport is small and situated amidst different structures, a situation which he said is prone to accidents.

“The to be constructed Mzuzu International Airport will act as a gate- way to Malawi and other countries, thereby facilitating easier communication and promote international trade.

Other development projects which are in the pipe line in the City according to Mutharika include construction of a spacious prison, tar mark roads, state of the art market, additional school block and a hospital considering the city’s fast growing population.

He said his government would ensure that people in the north have easy access to portable water by constructing water supply schemes in the entire districts which do not have reliable water supply sources.

Hindering on security which is one of DPP’s corner-stones, the President advised Malawi Police Service to intensify night patrols to enhance security in the City and track down suspected law breakers.

Mutharika called on the residents in the City to vote for him as President, Kenneth Sanga as Mzuzu City parliamentarian and DPP Councilors for materialization of the planned projects.

WE HAVE SET THE STAGE FOR MAKING MALAWI A PROSPEROUS NATION

APM and Running Mate
Arthur Peter Mutharika has chosen Minister of Civic Education, Culture and Community Development, Everton Chimulirenji,

I am delighted to submit our nomination papers today. And it is the will of God that this day should come. This day assures all Malawians that I am here to continue leading this country from poverty to prosperity. But our journey from poverty to prosperity depends on the choices we make.

This Election is going to be a watershed in the history of this nation. This year, we will to choose between taking Malawi forward, and taking Malawi back. We will choose between building this country and destroying everything we have begun.

But I have faith in the people of this country. When we found this country broken, bruised and economically wounded, we chose to fix and heal our economy. When we found this country in a crisis, we chose to regain our national pride and economic confidence to drive forward our country.

Now we are set to take Malawi to new heights. We have set the stage for making Malawi a prosperous nation. Now, we look forward to five more years of improving the economy, improving businesses, improving the quality of life for every Malawian.

  • Five more years of creating a skilled Malawi, opening new companies, creating more jobs for the Youth!
  • Five more years of industrializing Malawi, empowering our farmers, empowering our Youth and women!

We look forward to five more years of delivering more roads, connecting us to better hospitals, better markets and connecting us with our people.

  • Five more years of delivering rural electricity to more homes, more shops, more schools and more hospitals in more communities.
  • Five more years of delivering more decent homes for vulnerable children, men and women in our villages!
  • Five more years of reducing the suffering of the poor by empowering them with social cash transfer and public works programmes.
  • Five more years of improving conditions of our teachers, our nurses, our police officers, our soldiers and the public service.

But remember, Elections will come and go. This campaign will come and go. But Malawi will remain our country. You and I will always be Malawians. Therefore, let us engage in civilized politics in the spirit of peace, love and unity.

We are all Malawians! One Malawi, one choice! Taking Malawi forward!

Tiyeni tiyende pamodzi, ndi mtima umodzi!

May God Bless you all
May God Bless Malawi

My Take On It: Of Chilima, the reluctant “messiah” and so much ado about The Leader Inbox

Saulos Chilima
File Photo: VP Chilima: assures more support to flood victims

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones; so let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus hath told you Caesar was ambitious: if it were so, it was a grievous fault, and grievously hath Caesar answer’d it.Marc Antony’s eulogy for Julius Caesar

On June 6, 2018 Malawi Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima, put to rest election speculations about will he or won’t he run against President Mutharika in the 2019 tripartite elections.

“I believe that in the past 4 years of duty as (APM’s) Vice President we have had a very cordial relationship and still believe that this cordial relationship will continue as I serve as his State Vice President till the next administration is elected into office in 2019,” Chilima said in his cool, calm and collected manner.

He encouraged Malawians to speak out and up; that they must not stay silent, saying that “in truth, such silence and inaction amounts to complicity in the plunder of our nation’s wealth.”

At one point he quoted scripture extolling Malawians “let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”

He then ran into the future as he promised Malawians “to share with you all my fellow Malawians my plans for my future. For now, as the DPP has announced that it is holding its convention this June, I have decided not to contest on the DPP ticket for any position at the forthcoming party’s convention, let alone challenge the party’s presidency.”

But before diving into what just happened here and the sand-in-mouth-feeling his supporters may be experiencing, or as the deflated Chilima balloons wobble stage left, a comment must be made on the omissions by the good Dr. Chilima (obviously a non-historian).

Chilima and Mutharika
Chilima (L)and President Peter Mutharika (r)

As Chilima started rambling on about the “trailblazing preacher from Magomero…” the Chilima then presented a historic narrative that gave mention of the 1959 Nkhata-Bay massacre and then cruised right into the 1980’s and the Catholic Bishop heroic acts in the democracy road. His speech scrapped Malawi’s 30-year history.

Except for APM, Chilima did not mention anyone by name, so he can be excused for not mentioning Kamuzu Banda. However, skipping the Gwero and Khami prison year-long incarceration of hundreds of Malawians – many of whom lost their jobs, others their lives, and still others lost their marriages – is re-writing the country’s history on the one hand, and additionally misleading the youth.

The Malawi youth are a major constituency that the Vice President’s supporters and are a captive audience. As a leader, when speaking, it is healthy for the country that our history is narrated and call out all truths.

That was my main obstacle. It was an eagerly anticipated and welcomed notice to get that the VP would speak – about time some said; others said Amen or atimasule.

The press conference over, the dust settled, many Malawians breathing again after a thirty minute break, has left Malawians wandering: Now what? And while others are left wanting, many are discombobulated by the VP’s statement and social media is awash with people’s two-bit worth of analysis.

But gladly, the dust has settled, without saying so, it is obvious APM’s next VP is not AKC; and he is not running either for the presidency or any other position.

He came, he spoke, and he’s not running. Full stop. He has expressed his democratic right.

So, tell me what democracy look like? This is what democracy looks like. With Chilima’s cards on the table – despite being presented with the crown of leadership by the Chilima Movement – made up of DPP members, youth, and elderly people, Chilima has thrice refused the crown. He has spoken as the people were thirsting for him to do so.

At this stage, it may be the ideal time for the APM to lure the Chilima faction and supporters as a means of preventing the bleeding of the team.

Long live genuine democracy!
