The Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) Church in Chikwawa this week embarked on mass crusades; despite being asked to vacate the area by Paramount Chief Lundu.
This goes counter to what Paramount Chief Lundu was recently quoted at a rally as ordering the ECG Church to move out of the district; the Paramount claims that the ECG promotes Satanism, an allegation which ECG church officials in the district rejected as malicious and untrue.
CHIKWAWA-(MaraviPost)- Unknown assailants on Sunday attached the homes of Prophet Bushiri’s Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) Church leaders in the Lower Shire district of Chikwawa.
The attacks come barely a week after Paramount Chief Lundu declared that the ECG Church is not welcomed in the areas he is paramount chief. The Paramount, made the ramarks during a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) political rally at Nchalo Trading centre in the district.
In the Sunday onslaught, the Paramount is alleged to have ordered the demolition of the church. According to the Paramount, he claims that the ECG founder Prophet Shephered Bushiri promotes Satanism, and that he has a political ambitions.
Following Lundu attack on Bushiri’s church, Government, civil society organizations, and human rights activists, condemned the Paramount Chief over the uncivilized tendencies. they said the Chief’s actions have no space in Malawi’s Constitution.
The Chief’s actions caused great concern with ECG the church; through its Communication Director, Ephraim Nyondo, said Chief Lundu’s allegation amount to character assassination.
The Sunday attack on ECG leaders has instilled fears among the EGC church members in the district.
ECG’s Pastor Charles Makhaza, who was among the leaders attacked, said the thugs invaded his house while he and family members were fast asleep.
Pastor Makhaza disclosed that upon arrival at the house, the unknown thugs broke windows and attempted to enter through them.
“Without the help of the barking dogs my life and together with of my family members, could have been in danger. We believe that the barbaric action has been promoted by one of the traditional leaders in Chikwawa,” said Pastor Makhaza.
The Police, speaking through its PRO Nyondo, confirmed receiving a complaint from Pastor Makhaza about the attack by unknown assailants in the district.
The Police have however ,assured the ECG church of total protection; Police said they are investigating the attack.
Nyondo has therefore called on Government to ensure that people’s rights to worship freely, are safeguarded per Constitution, which guarantees freedom of religion.
