Egypt to host 2019 AFCONs

By Tusekero Mhango

KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has announced that Egypt will host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Egypt beat South Africa, the only other nation to submit, in a vote held at a Caf Executive Committee meeting.

Original host nation Cameroon was stripped of staging the tournament in November because of slow preparations.

Egypt, which will host the tournament for a fifth time, has just six months to prepare for the expanded 24-team finals, which kick off in June.

Caf has since offered Cameroon the chance to stage the finals in two years’ time, which has meant that the original hosts for both the 2021 and 2023 finals have been asked to delay their tournaments.

Caf had originally planned to name the new hosts on Wednesday 9 January.

Painful defeat for Bullets and Silver in CAF

Silver lost

Malawi flag-carriers Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver Strikers on Wednesday evening lost  their Confederation of African Football (CAF) inter-club competitions’ campaign.

TNM Super League leaders Bullets lost to  Kenya’s Gor Mahia at Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, Nairobi one null in the dying minute of the game  while Silver were defeated one null as well by  AO CMS of Gabon at Augustin Monédan, Libreville,  in Confederations Cup.

But Silver have to wear a brave face as they return to CAF competition after 25 years.

They last participated in a CAF competition in 1993 when they were knocked out by Arsenal of Lesotho when Confederations Cup was called in Africa Cup Winners Cup.

The Bankers had a youthful side that has played together for a while under Fazili.

Masters Security FC and Nomads jets in Angola and DRC for CAF

Malawi’s representatives in continental competitions, Be Forward Wanderers and Masters Security FC, finally flew out to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Angola yesterday, ahead of their Confederation of African Football (CAF) assignments this weekend.

Masters and Wanderers date Atletico Petroleos de Luanda and AS Vita on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, in first legs of the preliminary round.

Having failed to leave for Luanda on Wednesday due to visa complications, Masters left in two batches— the first delegation flew out at 11am from Kamuzu International Airport, aboard Ethiopian Airlines, via Harare, Zimbabwe then Addis Ababa, Eithopia.

A second group was expected to join Masters in Addis Ababa last night, having flown from Kamuzu International Airport via Chileka International Airport.

The delegation of Masters is then expected to arrive in Angola this afternoon ahead of the match at 11 de Novembro Stadium in Luanda.

Masters General Secretary, Zachariah Nyirenda, said he was excited that the team had finally left for Angola.

“We thank Malawians, Football Association of Malawi and our sponsor for ensuring that we travel to play the match. We are available for suggestions and criticism so that our team can do better as per our expectations,” Nyirenda said.

Masters hope to pull a shocker on their debut in the continental competition.

Having lost in strength testing matches to Be Forward Wanderers (4-0) over three weeks ago and Nyasa Big Bullets (2-0) at Bingu National Stadium over the weekend, the odds are against the Lilongwe-based side.

But Masters Head Coach, Abasi Makawa, on Wednesday, warned the Angolan side that they should be prepared for a run for their money.

“Football is played on the ground. We are going there as underdogs, which is good for us as we have nothing to lose. Our mission is to get a positive result and finish the job at home,” Makawa said.

Makawa has kept faith in the squad that has, in the warm ups, only won once— 4-3 against TNM Super League rookies, TN Stars.

Notable players missing in the Masters’ travelling squad, include Patience Kalumo and Sam Gunda.

New recruits Chimwemwe Kumkwawa, Zeliat Nkhoma, Suwedi Limbani, Rafik Mussa and Kondwani Lufeyo have made it to Angola.

Midfielder Richard Chande was also optimistic of grinding out a result in Angola.

“We are going to Angola to compete and not as tourists. Our target is to win the match in Angola, and we are confident that we will do that,” Chande said.

Malawi’s Caf Champions League representatives, Wanderers, departed yesterday for the DRC through Chileka International Airport.

Before departure, Wanderers Vice Captain, Alfred Manyozo Junior, assured the nation that they are going to Kinshasa for nothing short of a win.

“Vita are champions in their homeland and we are also champions here; so, we are not afraid of them. We will do our best.

We just thank our Executive Committee which has made this trip a reality,” Manyozo said

Nchalo UTD justifies appointment of Manda

Newly promoted Super League side, Nchalo United has justified the appointment of head coach Charles Manda as replacement of Mavuto Lungu who led the team into the top-flight league.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency on Sunday, Nchalo United General Secretary Beston Malunga said they opted for Manda because of his qualifications and experience in coaching.

“We discussed with a number of coaches and Mr. Charles Manda proved to be the best among them.

“He was the only coach who knows the set-up of Nchalo United. As you are aware, he played for this team for a long time when it was called Sugar Corporation of Malawi (SUCOMA) United,” said Malunga.

He added that Manda is an experienced coach who has been with various clubs like ESCOM United, Be Forward Wanderers and had also a stint in Swaziland.
“It is our hope that he will help us to remain in the top-flight league.”

Malunga also said the club decided to relieve Lungu of his duties as the head coach because he does not have CAF B coaching license, which is a requirement for any coach in the Super League.

“We gave Lungu a one-year contract hoping that he would attain the coaching license before joining the super league.

But that did not materialize because the Confederation of African Football (CAF) did not conduct any coaching course for Malawi last year,” said Malunga

The club offered Lungu the post of vice coach, which he rejected and the management of the team had no other option but to let him go, according to Malunga.

Nchalo United were promoted into the Super League after emerging as champions for the 2017 Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) Premier Division League.
