Wanderers are into semifinals of FDH Bank Cup

MCHINJI-(MaraviPost)-Mighty Wanderers have advanced to the semifinals of the FDH Bank Cup after edging out Creck Sporting FC 3–2 in a post-match penalty shootout, following a tense goalless draw at Aubrey Dimba Stadium in Mchinji on Sunday afternoon.

It was a tightly contested encounter, with both teams displaying determination and tactical discipline from start to finish.

Although Wanderers were favourites going into the game, they found it difficult to penetrate Creck’s solid backline, marshalled by Hardy Ng’andu, who received a yellow card in first-half added time.

The Nomads dominated possession early on, with Thierry Sama and Wisdom Mpinganjira coming close to breaking the deadlock.

Sama nearly scored in the 23rd minute with a powerful header that went just over the bar while Mpinganjira’s thunderous long-range effort narrowly missed the far post before halftime.

Creck, however, were not without their moments. George Chaomba almost put them ahead in the 29th minute with a brilliant solo run but his shot was well saved by Wanderers’ goalkeeper Dalitso Khungwa.

The first half ended goalless, setting the tone for a cagey second period.

After the break, both sides continued to chase a goal. Wanderers made attacking substitutions, bringing in Promise Kamwendo and later Masiya Manda to inject pace and creativity, while Creck responded by introducing Kondwani Chilembwe and Patrick Macheso to maintain intensity.

As the clock ticked down, the game turned into a midfield battle, with both goalkeepers Khungwa for Wanderers and Brighton Munthali for Creck pulling off crucial saves to keep their teams in contention.

With neither side finding the net after 90 minutes, the match went to penalties.

In the shootout, Wanderers held their composure as Masiya Manda, Promise Kamwendo and Blessings Mwalilino converted their spot kicks.

For Creck, George Chaomba and Frank Phiri scored but misses from Emmance Nyirenda and Ramadan Ntafu proved costly after Khungwa produced two brilliant saves.

Wanderers’ goalkeeper Dalitso Khungwa was the hero of the day, guiding his team to a 3–2 penalty victory and a place in the semifinals.

Speaking after the match, Creck Sporting coach Eliya Kananji said it was painful to bow out of the competition but praised his players’ performance, expressing hope that the same level of play in the league would bring positive results.

On the other side, Mighty Wanderers coach Bob Mpinganjira admitted it was a very tough game and said the most important thing was that his side advanced to the next round of the tournament.

Wanderers will face FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in one semifinal, while the other will feature Silver Strikers against Civil Service United.

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) will announce the dates and venues for the matches in due course.

Despite the break, the Nomads maintained match fitness with a 2-1 victory over Mzuzu City Hammers in the FDH Bank Cup last week.

The match promises to be a stern test for nomads as they seek to return to the continental showpiece with a bang and make a mark once again.

Mpinganjira has since appealed to fans to turn up in large numbers as they always do to support the team.

The match against Jwaneng Galaxy on Sunday at Bingu National Stadium, marks the return of the Nomads to the continental football since 2018.

TNM Super League: Blantyre Giants share spoils in Derby- 1-1

By Twimepoki Mangani

BLANTYRE-(MANA)-The highly anticipated, Blantyre Derby, in the TNM Super League between FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers produced a 1-1 stalemate, on Sunday at Kamuzu Stadium.

With the bragging rights and league contention at stake, the 72nd edition of the derby lived up to its billing with thousands of supporters packed in the stands.

While Bullets quickly established their dominance in the middle of the park, Wanderers looked dangerous, especially on the right flank with Stanley Sanudi whose efforts resulted in 3 early corners.

Bullets had a fair share of chances as seen in the 24th minute when Eric Kaonga managed to tip the ball over William Thole however Peter Cholopi cleared the ball from danger.

With Wanderers regrouping in attack, the ball was passed to Sanudi towards the right flank where he launched a thunder bolt from 30 yards out to beat goalie Rabson Chiyenda to send the Wanderers supporters into a frenzy with a 1-0 advantage.

Bullets made changes at the half, introducing Precious Sambani and Hassan Kajoke for Eric Kaonga and Antony Mfune and in unison upped the tempo of the game in search of the equalizer.

Their effort was rewarded in the 58th minute when Maxwell Phodo equalized with a tap-in from Kajoke’s rebounded shot, with the Stadium largely painted red in support of Bullets erupting into joy.

During the last 20 minutes, it was all Wanderers as the hosts settled to defend and see off the match.

In a post-match interview, Coach for Wanderers, Mark Harrison expressed satisfaction with the result while noting that the title is for Bullets to lose as they can only focus on winning their remaining games.

“It’s a derby a big game with a lot of expectations from both teams I can’t be upset with the result,” Harrison said.

The coach for Bullets, Kalitso Pasuwa said his team managed the game while highlighting that he anticipated a drop in form after the 60-minute mark due to their recent congested fixtures.

“We created chances in the first half while these guys got one chance and punished us. We however pushed and found the equalizer and managed the spaces in terms of defending in the dying minutes,” he said.

Mwayi Msungama was the match referee, he called 15 fouls against Bullets and 17 against Wanderers while waving off penalty shouts from both teams, the first when Yamikani Fodya challenged Gaddie Chirwa and another when Thole challenged Kajoke.

Bullets remain number 1 on the log table with 54 points from 25 games while Wanderers is second with 54 points from 28 games played.

Wanderers end season trophyless as Bullets reach Airtel Top 8 finals

…………..BULLETS 4-1 WANDERERS

Bullets into finals

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Babatunde Adepoju on Saturday sent Nyasa Big Bullets to the second Airtel top eight finals after netting four goals past William Thole’s goal at Kamuzu Stadium. Adepoju looked so aggressive and determined as if he was on a revenge mission to his former club.

Nyasa Big Bullets dominated the play from the first whistle and Wanderers looked inferior on the ball as they always came second and created few scoring chances which they also failed to utilize.

But 24 minutes into the game, Babatunde put the people’s team on the lead through a spot kick after Captain Alfred Manyozo handled in the penalty box.

Vincent Nyangulu leveled the scores 10 minutes later with a beautiful header from a well taken corner by Ted Sumani. At halftime the score line was at one all.

Second half, as Wanderers were still searching the ways of locking Bullets, their rivals also came with new tactics and few minutes into this half,Alick Lungu hit the upright and it was the same usual suspect Babatunde who shot it direct into Thole’s net from a rebound.

At 60th minute both teams made substitutions, Paul Kansungwi was taken off for Bright Bweke Munthali who brought in another momentum while Wisdom Mpinganjira was introduced for Ted Suman for Wanderers but he was too young to save Nyerere as the Nigerian Adepoju netted his third goal at 62nd minute after a beautiful play from Lanjesi Nkhoma. Callisto Pasuwa made another substitution taking out Lanjesi Nkhoma and introduced Precious Phiri.

Wanderers poor communication at the back between Peter Cholopi and William Thole gifted Babatunde a fourth goal. This time around the mountain was too high for the nomads to climb, and they could not transfer money through Airtel money as Adepoju had hacked their accounts.

Referee Chilinda blew the whistle to end the match, and yes Nyasa Big Bullets have reached the finals of 2021 Airtel top eight, thanks to Babatunde Adepoju’s top form who has now scored eight goals and currently lead the top goal scorers chart.Babatunde was later voted man of the match.

Heston Munthali, second Assistant coach for Bullets, was delighted for the win saying they mastered their neighbors play and worked on their weaknesses.

Alfred Manyozo Jnr, Wanderers Captain, was in tears and apologized to the team’s President Mr Thom Mpinganjira and supporters for the decimal performance.

This is the second time for Nyasa Big Bullets to reach the finals of the cup after 2018 season in which they lost by a goal to nil to Blue Eagles FC, the lone goal scored by Stuart Mbunge through a spot kick in the injury time.

They will be waiting for the winner between Silver Strikers and Civil Service United who meet in another Lilongwe Derby on 11th December, 2021.

The loss for Wanderers means they have finished 2020/2021 season trophyless as they also missed FDH.

Wanderers’ sponsorship hiked to MK100 million

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Japanese second-hand automobile dealers, Be Forward Limited, and other companies have reportedly hiked Be Forward Wanderers’ annual sponsorship from MK100 million to MK153 million, a timely boost for the TNM Super League champions.

Wanderers General Secretary, Mike Butao, Wednesday confirmed the hike but there was no immediate confirmation from the sponsors as they do not grant interviews to Malawi media.

He cited official shirt sponsor, Macron, and others such as MOL, NYK, Sun Phoenix, Global Line, SYNC Logistics, all from Japan, as having contributed to the sponsorship.

However, Butao said they need more money to keep the team afloat as its monthly wage bill hovers around K10 million.

“There are eight companies and Be Forward Limited remains the principal sponsor. All these are putting money into one pot and that is why the sponsorship keeps on rising. Having more sponsors increases stability and eases the burden on one sponsor.

“In return, they expect prudent management of the money, that their image is not damaged and that we should win the league, at bare minimum, plus other cups,” Butao explained.

Apart from monthly upkeeps, players get training allowances and game bonuses for a win. Wanderers also pay administration staff and others such as team doctor and security.

The increase in the sponsorship eases fears that arose after Be Forward took the team’s management to task over players’ boycotts of training due to unpaid dues.

In return, the sponsors expect Wanderers to use its fan base to promote the companies’ brands through platforms such as Face-book and website.

Wanderers Chairperson, Gift Mkandawire, confirmed, separately, to The Daily Times, the rise in the sponsorship.

“Our cost base is quite huge but we will probably manage the team with better coffers than it was last year. It is quite a huge boost for us and we will definitely work hard to reward the sponsors by defending the league title.

“We are proud to say that we are the only club that pays players better. Where there is gold, there is always trouble but we are the best club and our players are the highest paid in the country,” Mkandawire explained.

Wanderers won the Super League title last season, ending an 11-year wait after amassing 69 points.
The Nomads also took part in the Caf Champions League where they lost 6-1 on aggregate to AS Vita of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Broadcasting rights remain the biggest source of revenue for clubs the world over but in Malawi, teams are yet to fully benefit from such money due to teething challenges.

Local clubs’ earnings are affected by deeply entrenched gate ticketing fraud and appeasement policy on supporters who render their services to teams at a fee.

Wanderers and Nyasa Big Bullets pay supporters committee members 10 percent from gate collections for each game.

The fans are so powerful as they vote Executive Committee members. Wanderers’ elections are scheduled for March 25 in Blantyre.

Wanderers might be the best sponsored Super League team locally, followed by Bullets then Silver Strikers, whose packages are estimated at K100 million each per annum.

Joseph Kamwendo divorces Be Forward Wanderers

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Just hours after being stripped of his captaincy, Be Forward Wanderers veteran midfielder Joseph Kamwendo has resigned from the club with immediate effect.

According to information reaching this publication, Kamwendo’s resignation follows Wanderers’ decision to replace him as the team captain after his scathing comments about his fellow players in the aftermath of his side’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of AS Vita of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the second leg of CAF Champions League last week.

An audio clip of Kamwendo blasting his fellow players over captaincy was leaked to the public earlier this week.

In the clip, the former Caps United, Orlando Pirates and TP Mazembe midfielder was heard shouting at Esau Kanyenda, Team Doctor of the club and Media Officer Arkangel Tembo, accusing them of trying to take the armband away from him.

The clip sparked debate on social media and forced Kanyenda to resign from the club without citing reasons for his decision.

Kanyenda’s resignation from the club increased more pressure on the technical panel to make quick changes to the captaincy where Alfred Manyozo Jnr was named as Kamwendo’s successor, with Lucky Malata and Mike Kaziputa coming in as first and second vice captains respectively.

And after this news was communicated to Wanderers family, Kamwendo announced his resignation from the team.

It was reported that the influential midfielder, who scored six goals and had several assists to his name last season, announced that he was done with the club.

Masters Security FC and Nomads jets in Angola and DRC for CAF

Malawi’s representatives in continental competitions, Be Forward Wanderers and Masters Security FC, finally flew out to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Angola yesterday, ahead of their Confederation of African Football (CAF) assignments this weekend.

Masters and Wanderers date Atletico Petroleos de Luanda and AS Vita on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, in first legs of the preliminary round.

Having failed to leave for Luanda on Wednesday due to visa complications, Masters left in two batches— the first delegation flew out at 11am from Kamuzu International Airport, aboard Ethiopian Airlines, via Harare, Zimbabwe then Addis Ababa, Eithopia.

A second group was expected to join Masters in Addis Ababa last night, having flown from Kamuzu International Airport via Chileka International Airport.

The delegation of Masters is then expected to arrive in Angola this afternoon ahead of the match at 11 de Novembro Stadium in Luanda.

Masters General Secretary, Zachariah Nyirenda, said he was excited that the team had finally left for Angola.

“We thank Malawians, Football Association of Malawi and our sponsor for ensuring that we travel to play the match. We are available for suggestions and criticism so that our team can do better as per our expectations,” Nyirenda said.

Masters hope to pull a shocker on their debut in the continental competition.

Having lost in strength testing matches to Be Forward Wanderers (4-0) over three weeks ago and Nyasa Big Bullets (2-0) at Bingu National Stadium over the weekend, the odds are against the Lilongwe-based side.

But Masters Head Coach, Abasi Makawa, on Wednesday, warned the Angolan side that they should be prepared for a run for their money.

“Football is played on the ground. We are going there as underdogs, which is good for us as we have nothing to lose. Our mission is to get a positive result and finish the job at home,” Makawa said.

Makawa has kept faith in the squad that has, in the warm ups, only won once— 4-3 against TNM Super League rookies, TN Stars.

Notable players missing in the Masters’ travelling squad, include Patience Kalumo and Sam Gunda.

New recruits Chimwemwe Kumkwawa, Zeliat Nkhoma, Suwedi Limbani, Rafik Mussa and Kondwani Lufeyo have made it to Angola.

Midfielder Richard Chande was also optimistic of grinding out a result in Angola.

“We are going to Angola to compete and not as tourists. Our target is to win the match in Angola, and we are confident that we will do that,” Chande said.

Malawi’s Caf Champions League representatives, Wanderers, departed yesterday for the DRC through Chileka International Airport.

Before departure, Wanderers Vice Captain, Alfred Manyozo Junior, assured the nation that they are going to Kinshasa for nothing short of a win.

“Vita are champions in their homeland and we are also champions here; so, we are not afraid of them. We will do our best.

We just thank our Executive Committee which has made this trip a reality,” Manyozo said

Be Foward Wanderers launches ‘CAF imenyede’ fundraising campaign

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Be Forward Wanderers have announced the launch of the several initiatives to raise funds from their supporters and well-wishers towards the team’s participation in the 2018 CAF Champions League tournament.

Wanderer’s general secretary Mike Butao said they are setting up a fund-raising Task Force and that they will be working hand in hand with Football Association of Malawi Marketing department to ensure transparency and professionalism.

Butao said these fundraising efforts are meant to complement the efforts of their sponsors.

“We believe this is a national cause and the initial effort has to come from ourselves. All funds realized will be reported to both the public and the sponsors by ourselves and FAM and sponsors will be asked to come in and meet the shortfall. With this approach we believe it should be possible for any team to participate annually in the CAF tournaments,” he said.

Butao urged all Malawians to come in and participate in this CAF project.

He said their intention is to go as far as possible in this tournament.

On the fundraising, Butao said they have opened an NBS Bank CAF Account (18096398), for supporters to contribute money towards the teams CAF participation.

“This account is ready and well-wishers can start making deposits immediately,” he said.

The second fundraising initiative is Airtel Money Mobile Account, where they have commissioned Mobile Number 0999700070 for supporters who are on Airtel Mobile Network that want to contribute mobile money.

He said the number is in the name of Wanderers, and that this number is ready and well-wishers can start transferring cash immediately.

“We have also opened TNM E-Wallet Mobile Account. We have commissioned Mobile Number 0885986180 for supporters who are on TNM Mobile Network that want to contribute mobile money towards our CAF participation. The account is in the name of Wanderers as well and this account is ready and well-wishers can start transferring cash immediately,” he said.

He also said they have opened an SMS Promotion, which will be running a promotion whereby supporters will answer questions about the club and some money will come to the club from the sms messages. The promotion will start next week on Monday 8 January.

The club has also established what they call Government/Corporate/Individual support, where they will approach the Government, the corporate world and individuals for support.

Wanderers were paired against As Vita of DRC in their first game in February.

Meanwhile, the team is expected to start their preparations on 9 January 2018.
