Malondera Urges LCC to End Vendor Harassment

By Dorica Mtenje

LILONGWE(Maravi Post): Deputy Minister of Transport, Stevie Baba Malondera, has urged the Lilongwe City Council (LCC) to exercise restraint in its handling of street vendors, calling for an immediate end to the harassment of small-scale traders in the capital city.

Speaking on Sunday, March 24, during a public rally at Chatata Ground in Lilongwe City Centre Constituency in the presence of LCC Mayor Ester Sagawa,Malondera expressed concern over the aggressive tactics reportedly used by LCC officials during vendor evictions.

He noted that many of the vendors rely on loans from village banks to fund their businesses and described the current approach by LCC officials as inconsiderate and harmful.

“It is selfish for LCC officials to take advantage of struggling vendors who are simply trying to earn an honest living. Many of them borrow money to start their businesses, and the harassment they face is unacceptable,” Malondera said.

He emphasized the need for a more compassionate and strategic approach to managing informal trading, stressing that the government is committed to supporting all citizens, especially vulnerable groups.

“This is a government for everyone. LCC officials must stop abusing their power. Women and children are being hurt in the process, and that is not the Malawi we want,” he added.

Malondera assured the crowd that the government would explore better, non-violent ways to regulate street vending while ensuring the safety and dignity of all citizens.

He therefore said they are yet to meet with LCC officials to chart the way forward on the matter, which requires urgent attention.
