BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—The main opposition and former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 summoned Vice President for the South, Kondwani Nankhumwa, for a disciplinary hearing at Golden Peacock in Lilongwe.
But Maravi Post has gathered information indicating that the hearing did not take place and has been shifted to Friday 18th September, 2020.
According to a letter signed by the party’s disciplinary committee secretary Charles Mhango, some of the charges leveled against Nankhumwa include imposing himself as leader of opposition when Peter Mutharik had reportedly settled for George Chaponda, misleading the party’s president and plotting a revolt, meeting Malawi Congress official without getting consent from the president and his questionable background and academic qualifications.
Nankhumwa confirmed the development in an interview with local media.
On first charge, Nankhumwa, who is the darling of many DPP supporters, is accused of undermining the authority of the President, contrary to the express instructions from Peter Mutharika on the appointment of Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly and I violation of Article 6(ii), V and (vii) of the DPP Constitution.
“Before the president communicated to the right honourable speaker of the National Assembly on his choice of Leader of Opposition, you communicated to the right honourable speaker that you had been chosen Leader of Opposition and an announcement was made to this effect and when the president told you that he had chosen Honourable George Chaponda as Leader of Opposition, and you as Chief Whip, you refused and sent him a “Bye,” reads the letter.
The party also alleges that Nankhumwa conspired with General Secretary Grezelder Jeffrey to mislead the president.
“Between 29th of June and 10th of July 2020 you conspired with the Honourable Secretary General to mislead His Excellence the President that DPP members of parliament would revolt against His Excellency the President and the party if your imposed position of Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly, was to be reversed,” the letter reads further.
It has also been alleged that “Between 1st August and 4th of September 2020 you [Nankhumwa] visited the Malawi Congress Party officials specifically at the residence of the former Official Hostess Mama Cecelia Tamanda Kadzamira without informing and seeking the authority of His Excellency the president.”
In an apparent resolve to do away with Nankhumwa by tarnishing his image, the party has also raised an issue of academic qualifications which was very hot prior to the 2019 tripartite elections and Fresh Presidential Election.
In the letter, the party wants Nankhumwa to conclusively resolve and respond to queries about his background and education qualifications following social media tantrums that the academic qualifications he uses are not his.
“There have been several queries in the public domain about your background and education qualifications which tend to negatively affect your standing as a senior member of the DPP, however you have not publicly and conclusively responded and or resolved such queries and concerns to instill confidence in any office that you hold on behalf of the party,” it reads.
The academic qualifications issue started on social media as the work of the then opposition MCP but according to the letter, one would be tempted to conclude that it was initiated by some DPP gurus who are eyeing for the presidency of the party.
