During the game around 43,000 fans at raucous Wembley.

England midfielder Declan Rice on BBC One: “It’s incredible, a lot of people had written us off in the group stage, complaints about the performances, not scoring enough but we want to put people wrong, with a full house everyone had the fire in the belly to one, knock Germany out and two progress in the tournament.

“It is history, all the players were asked about the past games but we created history. Gary Neville said these games don’t come round often and it was a pleasure to be out there.

“Maturity comes in, you have had a yellow card and you have to stay composed and focused.

“Raheem Sterling is proving so many people wrong, scoring so many goals. Harry Kane is made for the big occasions, scored the goal that put the game to bed.

“We don’t want to get too ahead of ourselves but it is a massive game in Rome on Saturday. For today, the occasion, the fans, the players that were up for it. The dressing room, I have not been a part of a team with this togetherness. We really believe, with the tournament being at Wembley.”

EURO 2020: England hanging by a thread after goalless draw against Scotland

Scotland prevented England from breaking their defence.

England have put themselves under intense pressure as they are waiting for their last encounter against Czech Republic in group stages on Tuesday following a goalless draw against Scotland.

England, buoyed by 1-0 victory over Croatia in their opener of the prestigious continental showpiece, started the game on high note, giving their fans hopes of victory at 90 minutes. But Scotland’s defence was just too good for blunt striking force of England to penetrate.

Gareth Southgate’s side would have been guaranteed to advance from Group D with a win over their old rivals at Wembley. But discipline, determination and coordination at the back of Scotland saw lethargic England managing just one shot on target and Scotland’s combative display could easily have earned all three points.

Despite a flop that saw them booed off at full-time, England have four points and will be certain of qualifying if they avoid defeat by the Czech Republic in their last group game on Tuesday.

Scotland, in their first major tournament since the 1998 World Cup, looked far more composed than in their opening 2-0 loss to the Czech Republic.

They remain in with a chance of going through if they win their final match against Croatia.

With an average age of 25 years and 31 days, England’s starting line-up was their youngest ever in a major tournament match.

Meeting in a major tournament for the first time since England’s win at Euro 96, this was a redemptive performance for Scotland, whose fans serenaded their team at full-time.

It was the 115th clash between England and Scotland, an ancient rivalry that dates back to 1872 on the pitch and centuries earlier off it.

Sterling lone goal earns England victory over Croatia in EURO 2020

England players cerebrating their lone goal scored by Sterling

Raheem Sterling’s second-half strike has proved enough for England to see off World Cup finalist Croatia in a winning start to the Three Lions’ Euro 2020 campaign on Sunday.

Sterling was put through by an exquisite Kalvin Phillips pass, who bustled his way through the midfield before sliding Sterling in to finish in the 57th minute.

Croatia just lacked a little something in the final third as they pressed for an equalizer.

Gareth Southgate’s side was struggling to break down Croatia until Sterling struck in the second half at sun-baked Wembley.

The 26-year-old’s first goal at a major tournament – in his 13th game – was the perfect riposte to critics who questioned Southgate’s decision to select him instead of Jack Grealish.

Sterling has endured a chequered relationship with England fans after being hounded following his tame performances at Euro 2016.

He also struggled to hold down a place with Premier League champions City this term, culminating in his lackluster display in their Champions League final defeat against Chelsea.

But, days after he was given an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his anti-racism campaigning, Sterling enjoyed a perfectly-timed moment of redemption.

In a rematch of the 2018 World Cup semifinal won by Croatia, England was hampered by a lack of cutting edge until Sterling came to the rescue.

Sterling’s winner eased the tension at Wembley and got fans bellowing “Football’s coming home,” in the hope England can emulate its run to the semifinals when it hosted Euro 96, and maybe even win a major tournament for the first time since the 1966 World Cup.

In truth, this was a far from convincing performance, but Southgate will take heart from the way his team kept its nerve on a pressure-packed occasion.

England host neighbors Scotland in its second Group D match on Friday before taking on the Czech Republic in its final game of the first stage on June 22.

Manchester City win English Premier League title

– –

Manchester City have won a third Premier League title in four years after closest challengers Manchester United were beaten by Leicester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side are now 10 points ahead of second-placed United, who have just three games remaining.

It is the seventh time City have finished top of the English football pyramid and the fifth in nine years.

“This has been a season and a Premier League title like no other,” said Guardiola.

“This was the hardest one. We will always remember this season for the way we won. I am so proud to be the manager here and of this group of players.

– –

“They are so special. To come through this season, with all the restrictions and difficulties we’ve faced – and show the consistency we have is remarkable. It is relentless.

“Every single day, they are there, fighting for success, trying always to be better. They have been so, so resilient.”

Manager Guardiola, 50, has now won eight domestic trophies since arriving in Manchester in 2016.

City had the chance to wrap up the title themselves on Saturday, but suffered a 2-1 defeat by Chelsea at Etihad Stadium.

– –

However, Leicester completed the job for them with a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

It is the sixth time the Premier League title was decided at Old Trafford – the most of any venue, and three of which have been for other sides.

It is City’s second trophy in a little over two weeks after they beat Tottenham to claim the Carabao Cup and they are also in their first Champions League final after beating Paris St-Germain in midweek.

Since being taken over by the Abu Dhabi Group in September 2008, City have won 12 cups and this is the third time they have clinched a league and EFL Cup double.
