Justin Saidi Calls for Stronger Urban Management to Drive Jobs and Climate Resilience

By Dorica Mtenje

LILONGWE (Maravipost): Chief Secretary to the Government, Justin Saidi, has called for strengthened efforts in managing urbanisation to boost job creation and tackle challenges brought by climate change.

Speaking in Lilongwe during the 4th Session of the Malawi Urban Forum, held from 28th to 29th October, Saidi emphasized the importance of proper urban management and localisation in fostering sustainable national growth.

He highlighted that about 20 percent of the global population now lives in urban areas, noting that Malawi must enhance its urban development strategies to build climate-resilient and inclusive cities.

“Urbanisation presents both challenges and opportunities. If managed well, it can drive job creation, economic development, and improved living standards,” Saidi said.

This year’s forum was held under the theme:
“Strengthening Local Actions for Sustainable and Resilient Cities and Human Settlements: Accelerating the Implementation of MIP-1 and Sustainable Development Goal 11.”

UN-Habitat’s Regional Representative, Anaclaudia Rossbach, commended Malawi for hosting the session, describing it as a vital platform for aligning national urbanisation efforts with global sustainability goals.

“This forum offers an opportunity to enhance coordination, share knowledge, and ensure that urbanisation contributes positively to people’s livelihoods,” Rossbach said.

Among the notable dignitaries in attendance was Kenyan Ambassador Culista Munthalika, who was honoured for gracing the occasion.

The Malawi Urban Forum serves as a key platform for policymakers, local authorities, development partners, and urban planners to discuss strategies that can make Malawi’s cities more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient in the face of rapid urbanisation and climate change.

Clearing the ‘ruble of cadets’ continues as Malawi govt fires education ministry PS Saidi

Justin Saidi fired

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Justin Saidi, has been fired, MaraviPost has learnt.

According to analysts, this could be part of President Lazarus Chakwera’s zeal to clear the rubble of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) cadets in government departments as Saidi is also believed to be a hardcore DPP sympathizer.

There has been a ‘tsunami’ of dismissals of top officials in government departments and parastatal organizations since Chakwera took over the country’s leadership mantle.

Meanwhile, the President has appointed Sandram Maweru as Principal Secretary for ministry of Agriculture responsible for irrigation.

Malawi public universities selection results ready; selection on merit

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has hinted that selection of students into Malawi’s public universities has been done and results will be out this month.

The ministry disclosed this on Tuesday when announcing a policy which will be used beginning this year when selecting students based on merit following  the abolishment of the quota system of selecting students into the public universities.

“On March 3, 2020, we informed all public universities on the abolishment of the quota system of selection into the public universities.

“On April 10, the President concerted to the guidelines proposed by the universities. Therefore on May 6, selection on merit has been done by universities and results should be out by month end,” said Justin Saidi, the Principle Secretary in the ministry of Education, during a press briefing in Blantyre.

He said unlike the primary school selection to secondary schools, university selection is done by universities themselves.

“As government, we only provide policy. We don’t do the selection. With the announcement in February 2020 on the change in the selection criteria, we needed to also formulate a policy that would go with this change,” he said.

He therefore called on all needy students who will be selected, to access the loan from the loans board so that no one should fail to attain university education because of fees.
