Kamuzu Central Hospital bailed out with medical supplies in the face of Covid-19

The Children’s ward at Kamuzu Central Hospital

Mzuzu-(MaraviPost)—Health care workers at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) are all smiles, thanks to the donation of medical equipment at the facility by a local organization, Global Hope Mobilisation (Glohomo).

The donation which is worth K75 million includes medical supplies such as hand washing materials, personal protective equipment as well as a theatre room to help special support patients.

Speaking during the donation, Executive Director for the organisation, Caleb Thole, said the dream of the organisation was to save lives of Malawians during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Recently, the President called for support from different partners to come in and we believe that even though Covid-19 will be over, but the facility will still help Malawian women in responding to issues to do with maternal health,” said Thole.

In her acknowledgement, Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Priscilla Phiri Mwanza, said the support came at the right moment when the hospital was overwhelmed with the pandemic.

Mwanza explained: “We are very delighted for receiving this donation from Glohomo. It comes at the right moment when Covid-19 cases are rising. So far, before now, we were using a makeshift theatre within the hospital but it was very challenging; it’s very far from the ward and we always had to move a patient from here to that side inside.

“As we are all aware, Covid is a highly infectious disease and we are not supposed to be mixing these two groups: infectious and noninfectious people. So, having a special theatre for Covid will go a long way to prevent infections in non infected people.” The donation was made possible with support from Swiss Agency for Development and Corporation and Education Trust Africa.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-In the wake of hunting for soldier cum musician, Emmanuel Ghost Mbewe, Malawi Defence Soldiers (MDF) has increased the pressure on his family to reveal his whereabouts to the extent of beating up the wife.

The MDF even went further  dumping the wife  in the hands of Kawale police who later left her in the hands of doctors at Kamuzu Central Hospital.

MDF intelligence with support from military police are hunting for Ghost Mbewe because of his latest song depicting some of the major problems soldiers face in the barracks for the incoming president without picking a choice from the fray of candidates.

Mbewe’s wife was picked around 3pm on Saturday 13th April 2019 and she was profoundly beaten and had her clothes torn to tatters by the abductors while forcing her to surrender her phone before they took her to Kamuzu Barracks Military police for further torture to reveal the whereabouts of her husband.

The woman had just given birth through caesarean section on 15th February 2019 and had not fully recovered and the beating left her with a swollen stomach and being asthmatic the tattered clothes which could not provide enough warmth to the body made her prone to an attack.

Fearing she was going to die in their hands, the military men took the lady to Kawale police at around 10pm.

But because of her state of health, the policemen just took her to Kamuzu Central Hospital where she is receiving treating up to now.

Ghost Mbewe has sworn that his enemies will not find him not matter the situation. The army has resorted to confiscating his vehicle which is now parked at the Kamuzu Barracks Military Police offices.

Community members in Chilinde are calling on women rights activists and the human rights defenders coalition to take up the case of the lady against MDF as she has done nothing wrong in the eyes of the law.

The search operation is a directive from the MDF commandant General Supuni Phiri dancing to the tune of Norman Paulosi Chisale the puppet master as reported earlier by the Eagles

Lilongwe, February 25, 2019.  President Peter Mutharika’s Democratic progressive party (DPP) running mate in the 2019 presidential race, Everton Chimulirenji has condemned the killings of people with albinism describing it as a barbaric act.

Chimulirenji made the statement when he addressed a political rally at Masintha ground in Lilongwe to familiarize himself with the party supporters since his appointment as running mate.

Stop killing albinos

He said these barbaric acts have deeply traumatized people with albinism as they can no longer enjoy their rights to freely move around and also the most precious of all rights, the right to life.

“I would like to ask those with information to come forward and share it with security agencies so that our brothers and sisters with albinism can be protected,” said Chimulirenji.

Chimulirenji also asked people who attended the rally to vote for President Peter Mutharika for development projects to continue.

He cited the cancer centre in Lilongwe as one of the poster projects of Professor Peter Mutharika which will help save lots of lives.

“The government has been spending millions of kwacha treating cancer patients abroad while many others have died in their homes because they could not afford such treatment due to financial constraints.

“This facility will enable a lot of such families to access cancer treatment within the country and hence save lives,” he said.

Speaking earlier, Uladi Mussa assured Chimulirenji of DPP support since he was chosen by the president himself and nobody has the authority to challenge the president’s choice.

DPP Secretary General, Grezelder Jefrey also praised President Mutharika for several development projects taking place in the central region such as the Salima-Lilongwe water project, Kamuzu International Airport upgrade and an upscale operating theatre at Kamuzu Central Hospital among others.

She then asked the people who attended the rally to vote for president Mutharika for the country to develop further.

Several cabinet ministers such as Jean Kalirani of Lands and Samuel Tembenu, Minister of Justice attended the rally among others.

Malawi will hold tripartite elections to elect president, members of parliament and councilors on May 21, this year.

Vincent Wandale sues Malawi Govt over forced medication

ZOMBA-(MaraviPost)-Self-acclaimed leader of People’s Land Organisation, Vincent Wandale, has dragged the government to court for forcing him to take medication at a psychiatric hospital as well as constructively dismissing him from the civil service.

Wandale’s lawyer, Oscar Taulo said they have logged the two complaints at the Constitutional and Labour Relations courts.

“On the first count, which is in the Constitutional Court, we want it [the court] to interpret whether it is right to take somebody to the hospital for a forced medical treatment,” he said.

In November last year, Senior Resident Magistrate Paul Chiotcha made a ruling after examining Wandale’s medical report by a psychiatrist at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) that Wandale was not fit to stand trial and ordered him to go to Zomba Mental Hospital for treatment.

On the other count, Taulo said Wandale was suspended and has never been paid since then.

“There was a time Mr Wandale was an employee of the government. He got suspended and he has not been paid anything to date. To us, we feel it is constructive dismissal,” he said.

Meanwhile, registrar of the court who doubles as the spokesperson of the Judiciary, Agnes Patemba, said she was not aware of the summons.

“Ask me tomorrow (Monday), I should be able to get that [details of the case] when I get to the office,” she told the Sunday Times.

Wandale, an interdicted civil servant, has been fighting for land rights for years and declared the independence of Mulanje and Thyolo over what he called the government’s failure to address the land challenges that people in the two tea growing districts are facing.

Health Ministry refutes Daily Times story on four babies died at KCH over blackout

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Ministry of Health and Population has refuted as untrue Daily Times story that alleged that four babies died at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) during Christmas because of blackout.

According to the ministry, two babies died but not due to blackout.
One died upon admission to the hospital and the other died while on oxygen whose oxygen cylinders do not use electricity.

On Wednesday December 27, The Daily Times published an article that claimed that four babies died as a result of a loss of power at KCH.

After the media report, Minister of Health and Population, Atupele Muluzi instructed the Secretary for Health and Population, Dr Dan Namarika to conduct an investigation into the issue.

The investigation revealed that through 24 hours of Christmas Day (25 December) two babies tragically died at Kamuzu Hospital.

The first died because of a severe case of Malaria and the second was suffering a medical condition that tragically was diagnosed too late to be treated. The investigation showed that neither death was caused because of the loss of any power.

The investigation further established that through the 24 hours of Christmas Day, Kamuzu Central Hospital indeed did suffer a loss of power for approximately 10 minutes and unfortunately the back up generator failed to cover this period and during that time no deaths were recorded at the hospital.

Following the death, Muluzi has said; “Any loss of life is a tragedy, particularly those of young children, however there was very little that the medical team could have done to save either child despite the professionalism that they showed caring for both patients.

“I hope that the families of both children will accept the sincere condolences of all in the Malawi medical service and I hope we can respect their privacy at this tragic time”.

And Namarika also added, “100Kw of solar power from the recent Global Fund grant will be installed at KCH ear budsly in January. While this is not a total solution it will go some way to supporting the hospital with its future power needs.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry has advised The Daily Times to write stories with facts and avoid sensationalizing stories especially those that concern people’s health and lives.

The donation was made along the sidelines of this year’s cancer awareness walk from Parliament Building to Lilongwe Wildlife Centre.

This was part of Cockpit’s contribution toward the initiative in which Think Pink Malawi, in conjunction with International Women Association of Malawi (IWAM) this week started events to bring awareness on breast cancer; and will run through out the month of October.

Launched in 2014 by the former Miss Malawi Brandina Khondowe, the initiative runs under the theme “early detection of cancer is key for survival.”

Cockpit Managing Partner, Martin Mkasala told The Maravi Post that the donation aims to bring success of the campaign.

Khondowe lauded the company for the timely financial support and said the resources will contribute to the buying manmogram machinery, which are very important in screening exercises.

The Think Pink founder disclosed that the October 21 event in Salima, will cost the group MK2million; there is therefore the need for more partners to come in to support.

“Our hope is to bring awareness to communities of Chief Khombedza in Salima that do not have access to mainstream breast cancer awareness messages. Breast and cervical cancer screening will be offered for free at the event,” said Khondowe.

This year’s cancer awareness walk attracted lawmakers, government officials, Lilongwe residents, and was spiced by Mizu Band and Patience Namadingo songs.

Since 2014, Think Pink has reached out to about 5,000 women with a total of 2,000 women physically examined and 50 sent for further diagnostic testing at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe.
