Chakwera transforming capital Lilongwe amid turbulence

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera legacy will go a long way in the history of many Malawians despite his Government going through various natural calamities.

A renowned business scholar Jana Masarova in his paper ‘Importance of road infrastructure in the economic development and competitiveness,’ says the extensive network of roads of high quality is essential for trouble-free road transport, which is the most widely-used mode of transport in daily business model.

The advantages of road transport include transporting passengers and carrying goods regardless of distance directly to a destination, the relatively high speed and no time restrictions.

The scholars argue that road transport and its infrastructure are enabled to carry people as well as materials, raw materials, and semi-finished and finished products intended for sale and deliver in good time.

He also argues that road infrastructure affects the flexibility and mobility of the workforce, which is reflected in the employment level.

The degree to which the road infrastructure is developed has an impact on several areas, such as for instance the development of tourism, influx of foreign investments, and regional development.

Lilongwe Water Board Upgrades Piping System

Madzi Bulletin:,LWB Upgrades Piping System

The Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) is currently upgrading some of its water transport mains within Lilongwe City inorder to eliminate bottlenecks in the water supply system. The exercise under the Lilongwe Water Resources Efficiency Programme (LWREP) is being funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB).

The upgrading exercise will see a replacement of the existing Asbestos Cement pipes with Ductile Iron pipes, targeting a total of 17.5 Kilometres. It is expected that once completed, there will be a reduction in the current deficiencies in LWB’s water transport system as well as reduction in the frequent pipe bursts and leakages due to aging of the present system, among other factors.

Upgrading of transport mains is currently underway in the following areas: LWB water treatment plant (Area 3) to Mwenda (Biwi Triangle), Mwenda to Tsabango (Area 23 tank), Mtunthama tanks to Area 9 Tower and Northern Booster Station (Behind Parliament Building) to Kanengo tanks

Mayor Bikoko launches K200 million Lilongwe sewer line at Lumbadzi

The Lilongwe City Council (LCC) this week, commissioned the newly reconstructed Lumbadzi Sewer System with the hope of putting an end to health hazards Lumbadzi residents were exposed to due to the existing poor sewer system.

For over twenty years, Lumbadzi had no proper functioning sewer line, and this resulted in some elements of the sewer being drained into surrounding rivers, and rendered residents prone to health hazards like cholera and diarrhea and other waterborne diseases.

With the help from the Malawi Government through the Infrastructure Development Fund, the Council renovated the sewer line system to a tune of over K200m.

The sewer line was officially launched launched by Mayor for Lilongwe City, Desmond Bikoko.

“This development has been in the pipeline for the past twenty years, because the previous sewer line system had provided just too many health risks to the people of Lumbadzi. And the LCC being the landlord, we thought it wise to bring an end to this.

“I am extremely happy because to have this sewer line fixed, was part of my 10-point plan for Lilongwe City when I assumed office in January. However, we have not done this alone as the Government of Malawi and the Ministry of Local Government, provided us with tremendous support,” said Bikoko.

Bikoko said this was one of the initiatives being taken to ensure that what recently happened in area 18, where piped water had mixed human waste from sewer lines due to faulty pipes, does not happen again.

He said the Council would ensure that new structures being put on the ground, are of high quality and that it would continue to monitor all pipes to ensure that any defective issues should be addressed quickly.

The LCC has since entered into a partnership with Airport Holdings Limited, which is also a direct beneficiary of the sewer line, to provide security for the pipeline.

In his remarks, Group Village Headman Dzoole, said the community leaders would take the frontline in protecting the sewer line.

“Before (the construction of) this sewer line, our people faced dangerous healthy risks like cholera, because of the poor drainage system. This also led to the high multiplication of mosquitoes, and subsequently, growing numbers of malaria cases.

“This will be one of the motivating factors for us chiefs to take a leading role by establishing groups which will provide security checks to the sewer line to avoid vandalism,” he assured.
