LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Inspector General of Police Richard Luhanga has promoted two brave police officers, Fred Nkhata and his colleague, for their role in foiling an armed robbery at Mbowe Filling Station in Lilongwe.
The officers, dressed in civilian attire, pretended to be ordinary citizens withdrawing cash from an ATM.
As one officer walked away from the machine, he was attacked by a thug wielding a panga knife. His colleague, anticipating the attack, pulled the trigger and shot the suspect in the leg, preventing harm to innocent civilians.
The incident has sparked widespread commendation for the officers’ bravery and initiative, with many praising their proactive approach to tackling crime in the area.
The promotion serves as a morale booster and motivation for the officers, who have demonstrated exceptional professionalism and dedication to duty.
The Mbowe area has been plagued by frequent robberies, particularly in the evenings when people withdraw cash from ATMs.
The successful operation is seen as a significant breakthrough in the fight against crime, and the police have vowed to intensify their efforts to ensure public safety.
“This is a clear message to all criminals: if you threaten public safety, you will be stopped,” said Alfred Chinthere, Deputy Police Spokesperson.
The National Advocacy Platform (NAP) has also commended the police for their undercover operation, describing it as an example of professional policing that balances public safety with human rights.
The officers’ bravery and quick thinking prevented a potentially disastrous outcome, and their promotion is a well-deserved recognition of their service.
The suspect is currently receiving medical treatment and will face justice once his condition improves.
The police have warned that they will continue to take a zero-tolerance approach to crime, and Malawians are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
