On May 17, conservation non-profit African Parks, the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) and Malawi’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) flew four African cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) from South Africa and reintroduced them to Liwonde National Park in southern Malawi.
The cheetahs have been moved into special enclosures called bomas for now, where the animals will learn to adapt to their new home under constant supervision. After spending some time in the bomas, the cheetahs will be released into the wider park, African Parks said in a statement. The animals are the first large predator to be reintroduced into Liwonde, and are said to be in good health. Continue reading Malawi Tourism: Cheetahs return to Malawi after decades→
MACHINGA-(MaraviPost)- A ferocious buffalo, that escaped from Liwonde National Park in Machinga district, on Wednesday killed a 44-year old small-scale farmer.
Machinga Police station spokesperson Davie Sulumba, identified the deceased as Steward Mapanga who met the terrible fate at a cassava garden during the morning hours.
Sulumba told the Maravi Post that whilst there, a woman who was harvesting her maize in a nearby fiel, shouted a warning call for the deceased to take caution and seek cover.
The woman alerted the late Mapanga that a wild animal was running towards them and luckily, they managed to hide themselves, and the wild animal passed by.
The police publicist added that the deceased however, followed the animal and he recognized that it was a buffalo. Unfortunately in no time, the beast turned to attack and it severely injured him in the process.
Sulumba said Mapanga sustained a deep cut on the stomach and was taken to Chikweo Health Center where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
“Postmortem conducted at the Health facility revealed that death was due to severe loss of blood. The matter was reported to the game officials with an aim of tracking the animal back to the protected area.
“However local residents had no patience to wait for the hMe rangers. They mounted a search themselves, and after they managed to kill the animal, they scrambled for its meat,” Sulumba said.
The late Mapanga hailed from Matchina village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Chikweo in Machinga district.
