Dowa man arrested over MDF soldier Nyirongo murder

DOWA-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police in Dowa have arrested 24-year-old Pemphero Puleti in connection with the murder of 30-year-old Chiswansangu Nyirongo, a former Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldier.

The incident occurred on June 15, 2025, at Nyirongo’s residence in Kalazi village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Chiwere, Dowa district.

According to Alice Sitima, Dowa Police Spokesperson, Nyirongo’s girlfriend, 27, visited him at his house that night.

While they were together, she was startled by a strange noise coming from the living room.

Therefore Nyirongo went to investigate and encountered a stranger, later identified as Puleti, entering the house.

The two got into a fight, and Nyirongo was stabbed with a knife during the altercation.

He succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention.

Following an investigation, police arrested Puleti, who will appear in court to face charges related to the murder.

Nyirongo’s body was laid to rest in his village of Kyalama, Traditional Authority (T.A) Chikulamayembe, Rumphi district.

Unknown assailants kill MDF Soldier in Dowa

A Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldier was on Wednesday murdered at Mvera Support Battalion in Dowa District.

 

In confirmation, MDF Spokesperson Major Paul Chiphwanya said Private Soldier Sydney Njelema aged 37 was murdered by unknown assailants on the fateful day.

 

His body was discovered along the path that leads to the barracks.

 

The deceased is reportedly to have gone to drink in the surrounding village on the evening of Tuesday soon after knocking off from work.

 

He is said to have not returned to his house, until his body was found on the morning after.

 

Postmortem results have revealed that, the soldier had died due to severe head injuries caused by a sharp object.
