RUMPHI-(MaraviPost)- At least ten people are still missing in the ongoing rescue mission Malawi Defense Force (MDF) has intensified following the Easter Lake Malawi Tragedy.

The development comes a week after about five people were reportedly dead have a boat carrying church members en-route from Easter payers capsized on Lake Malawi in the northern district of Rumphi.

The rescue team is yet to recover the ten bodies out of 11 that a corpse was found in a decomposed state on Friday bringing the death toll to six.

The body was recovered while floating on that day’s morning on Lake Malawi. But since Friday, there have been no any recoveries despite the search in progress.

Mzimba Police Station spokesperson, Victor Khamisi told The Maravi Post on Tuesday that there was no any new development since the six body was found.

Khamisi said the survival number remains at 54 and six people dead with an assurance that searching exercise rages on to recover the remaining ones.

“Since the search is going on there could be some developments later but as of now, our records show that six people died while 54 survived,” Khamisi said.

Meanwhile, the Malawi police on Monday, issued a safety net measure for water transport users that make sure that boats they travel in are always feet.

The law enforcers said boat passengers are to make that the vessel has the right equipment including life jackets, fire extinguishers, electric pumps, signal lights, and containers for draining water.

Passengers should know that if they board any vessel without safety equipment their lives on the Lake are at high risk.

The police assured the general public that will continue patrolling the lake to maintain order and sure that all boats plying their trade on the lake have the necessary safety equipment mentioned above, and that all boats crossing the lake have auxiliary engines to help in times of danger.

“Marine Police will make sure that all crew members in passenger boats have at least able seaman or motor man licence to man these vessels professionally. Any lake user to be found on the wrong arm of the law will be arrested, given appropriate charges and taken to court

“Police are appealing to boat crew members to take part in reducing water accidents by following lake safety rules and regulations and to passengers to always avoid boarding overloaded vessels,” urges James Kadadzera National Police Spokesperson.
