Madise resigns as Sports Council board chairperson

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Sunduzwayo Madise has officially stepped down as Chairperson of the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS), bringing an end to his tenure at the helm of the country’s sports regulatory body.

In a statement issued today, Madise said his decision follows recent changes introduced by the government, which have prompted a new direction for the council.

He expressed deep gratitude to the government and relevant stakeholders for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the board over the past years.

“This decision comes after careful reflection. I am thankful to the authorities for the confidence they showed in me and for giving me the opportunity to serve the sporting fraternity of Malawi. It has been an honor to contribute to the growth and governance of sports in the country,” Madise said.

During his tenure, Madise played a significant role in championing reforms aimed at improving transparency and accountability within sports organizations.

He also pushed for the development of grassroots programs to nurture young talent and promoted the diversification of sports disciplines beyond football and netball.

According to information that MaraviPost Sports Desk gathered his resignation paves the way for the government to appoint a new chairperson who will align with the administration’s current vision for the sports sector.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports is expected to announce a replacement in the coming weeks.

Madise’s departure comes at a crucial time when Malawi is preparing for several major sporting events including qualifiers for international competitions and the continued implementation of sports infrastructure projects nationwide.

Malawi National Sports Council to build indoor netball court in Blantyre

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) has announced plans to construct an indoor netball court at the Blantyre Sports Arena, formerly known as the Blantyre Youth Centre.

This development aims to support the Netball Association of Malawi’s (NAM) commercialization drive.

During the launch of the One NICO Top 12 Netball Cup at the Arena, Limbani Matola, MNCS’s marketing, planning, and infrastructure development director, revealed that discussions are underway with corporate partners to make this project a reality.

“We will have an indoor netball court in Blantyre,” Matola assured.

The indoor facility is expected to facilitate NAM’s plan to introduce gate charges at netball matches, a move that will boost the sport’s commercialization.

Nico Holdings Limited, which has pledged K1 billion in netball sponsorship over three years, is supporting the tournament.

The company’s corporate affairs manager, Mbumba Mlia Ndasauka, expressed hope that the tournament will inspire young girls and nurture netball talents in Malawi.

The sponsorship deal includes an annual allocation of K320 million in the first season, K330 million in the second season, and K350 million in the third season.

NAM president Vitumbiko Gubuduza highlighted the significance of the tournament in creating a platform for netball commercialization in Malawi.

The One NICO Top 12 Netball Cup kicked off with a thrilling match between Kukoma Diamonds and Blue Eagles Sisters, which ended in a 25-25 draw.

The Blantyre Sports Arena, with its rich history dating back to 1966, already boasts indoor and outdoor sporting facilities, including netball courts.

The proposed indoor netball court will undoubtedly enhance the sporting infrastructure in Blantyre and contribute to the growth of netball in Malawi.

MNCS,MBC partner to promote sports coverage

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) and Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance sports coverage in the country.

Speaking during the MoU signing ceremony at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre,MNCS Chief Executive Officer(CEO ) Henry Kamata said the partnership aims to provide comprehensive, equal, and extensive coverage of various sports disciplines.

Kamata highlighted the need to showcase the activities of unsung heroes in sports, noting that only a few disciplines receive adequate coverage.

“We have 43 registered sports associations, but the public is only familiar with less than 10,” he said.

The MNCS CEO emphasized the importance of bringing hidden talents to the forefront through live broadcasts and in-depth analyses.

MBC representatives, including Director of Engineering Aidan Gumeni and Director of Programs Kate Kujaliwa, expressed confidence that the partnership will attract sponsorships and advertising through MBC’s television, radio, and online channels.

The collaboration is expected to promote sports development and showcase Malawi’s sporting talent to a wider audience.

MNCS donates medical equipment to Mdeka health centre

BLANTYRE-(Maravi Post)-The Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) on Wednesday donated medical equipment worth MK5 million to Mdeka Health Centre in Blantyre District.

The donation, which includes a fridge, wheelchair, stretcher, suction machine, and other essential items, aims to support the center’s healthcare services.

Speaking to journalists, MNCS Director of Human Resource and Administration, Lameck Gomani said the donation is a significant event for the organization.

“We are excited to participate in the assistance of our fellow Malawians,” said Gomani.

He said the donation is funded by surplus funds from a marathon event held in Blantyre some months ago.

Gomani said MNCS chose Mdeka Health Centre after assessing the healthcare needs of various facilities in the area.

He said as an organization promoting sports development, MNCS recognizes the importance of healthcare in supporting sports activities.

“We believe that sports and healthcare go hand-in-hand,” Gomani emphasized.

On his part,Mdeka Health Centre In-charge, Ibrahim Tanga,expressed his gratitude towards MNCS for the donation.

He said the medical equipment will be used to treat various diseases, including asthma, Tuberculosis, and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STIs).

Said Tanga:”The health centre has been facing challenges in providing adequate medical care due to limited resources. We therefore, appreciate MNCS for this donation. It will help us a lot.”

He acknowledged that while the donated equipment will be useful for a couple of years, the health centre still requires more resources to provide quality healthcare services.

Tanga emphasized that the medication available at the center is often insufficient, and additional support is necessary to address the healthcare needs of the community.

Mdeka Health Centre provides medical services to the local population of about 33,100.

MNCS announces Malawi sports awards nominees

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) on Monday unveiled the top three nominees in each of the 13 categories for the Malawi Sports Awards.

The announcement was made at press briefing held at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre.

Speaking with journalists,MNCS Director of Marketing, Planning, and Infrastructure Services, Limbani Matola expressed gratitude to the national sports associations and sports journalists, through the Sports Writers Association of Malawi (SWAM), for submitting nominations.

Said Matola:This year’s awards received an overwhelming number of nominations, indicating a strong partnership between the MNCS and the sports community.

“The nomination process involved three stages: nomination, shortlisting, and adjudication.A committee reviewed the nominations to ensure they met the minimum criteria for each category.The adjudication committee then selected the top three nominees in each category.

“The public can now participate in the voting process through a web-based portal https://awards.malawisport.mw accessible on any phone with internet or WhatsApp.Voting starts today, and the public’s contribution will account for 30% of the total marks, while the judges’ marks will contribute 70%.”

Matola encouraged the public to vote for their favorite nominees, emphasizing that the process is merit-based.

This year’s sports awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on February 28, 2025 at Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi.

Mzuzu City Half Marathon back

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-The second edition of Mzuzu City Half Marathon is slated for Sunday, March 10, 2024.

Chairperson for the Organising Committee of the marathon, Peter Mumba, confirmed the development on Thursday morning during a press briefing held at Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) offices in Mzuzu.

Besides the marathon itself, there will also be a fun run, relay race and aerobics.

Sponsors to this year’s event include Lilongwe Dairy who are sponsoring the main event, Medical Aid Society of Malawi (MASM) who will shoulder all the costs regarding relay race, Itel Malawi, Lab Processors Limited, and IBIB Consultancy.

Minister of Sports, Uchizi Mkandawire, will grace the event.

Mumba hailed the partnership that is there among MNCS, Moyale Barracks and Mzuzu City Council in as far as organization of the event is concerned.

“We are happy to announce that we are very. Preparations are over and I wish to thank the corporate world for coming in to sponsor this event this year. There will be a lot of fun this year because in addition to the marathon itself, we will also have relay race and aerobics,” explained Mumba.

Yotam Mutafya of Mzuzu City Council said the event will lift the profile of the city.

“This event will help to lift the profile of Mzuzu City while at the same time help to improve the health aspect of city residents and even those outside the city. In terms of tourism, this is an opportunity for hospitality facilities to attract new customers. I urge all Mzuzu City residents to patronize this event,” remarked Mtafya.

The starting point for the half marathon this Sunday is Saint John’s Hospital.

From there, the runners will go up past Marymount Girls Secondary School to Mzuzu Technical College to Chiputula; down to Mzuzu Airport to Shoprite Roundabout, to clock tower; past Taifa Market and finish in the stadium, after the second lap.
