Malawi President Mutharika calls for ease of political tensions

President Mutharika speaks against political tension

Lilongwe, January 26, 2020: President Arthur Peter Mutharika has called on political leaders and Malawians in general to desist from causing unrest and instigating tension saying it is detrimental in attracting potential investors.

Mutharika made the call Sunday in Lilongwe on arrival from London, United Kingdom (UK) where he attended the UK–Africa Investment Forum.

The summit brought together business community, heads of state and government and international institutions to showcase and promote investment opportunities across Africa and strengthen UK’s partnership with the continent.

“The international community has expressed confidence in our macro-economic situation here. They say it is an economy where they can invest in power, agriculture, infrastructure, health and education,” Mutharika said.

He added that the international community is impressed that the country’s economy has grown faster than any other country in southern Africa.

“I assured the investors that Malawi is a peaceful nation and that the tense situation in the country is temporary and it will change.

“I am pleading with my fellow Malawians to withdraw from the path we have taken, of destruction; sit down and reconcile to move forward and rebuild this country,” Mutharika said.

The country has been rocked in post electoral demonstrations in protest of the May 2019 presidential election results in which Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) declared Mutharika winner of the polls.

But some opposition leaders went to court to challenge the results arguing that the polls were marred by irregularities; therefore, should be declared null and void.

Despite the matter being in court, some people led by Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) have been staging demonstrations that in some instances turned violent.

Violent demonstrators have been destroying and looting both public and private property worth millions of kwachas.

Apart from the UK-Africa Investment Forum, Mutharika also attended the UK-Malawi Investment Forum. Sixteen Malawian companies also attended the forum to market themselves and their activities for potential investment.

Malawi has since clinched deals in energy, health, mining, tourism, agriculture, among others.

Why ConCourt Judges reveal corruption attempt; Malawi election case

By Nenenji Mlangeni

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-As reported on Times TV that Malawi Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda has logged a complaint to Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) forwarded to him by the Constitutional Court (ConCourt) judges that President Peter Mutharika’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has tried to bribe them not once.

This follows a letter by the Forum for Justice to the Chief Justice on allegations that UTM president met with the judiciary staff at his house in Lilongwe, the Chief Justice has reported the matter to the ACB as DPP uses that as a syndicate to bribe judges.

Reliable source told this publication that, on 2nd January, 2020, some junior court staff were called to the house of Saulos Chilima the meeting that DPP takes advantage of to buy judges to make sure that a verdict is made in their favour.

We can exclusively reveal that this did not go well with one of the people who were approached by DPP and who has total trust in the independence, professionalism and integrity of the judges who can not be bought, hence spilling the beans.

These judges have done this things for very good reasons.

  • To tell us who the winners are before the judgement comes. No winer attempts to bribe a judge this is the work of a sole loser.

  • To squeeze cadets balls so that when judgement comes they don’t cause unnecessary noise, it’s about telling cadets that their end has eminently arrived.

  • To befriend with all sane Malawians, judges are voters too and this is the right time to express their anger for what DPP do to their votes.

  • To prove to Mutharika that now they’re in control of the country and that Mutharika has no money to buy their souls. The money Mutharika brag about is for Malawians.

  • To save Malawi from the burning hell, these judges have been enveloped in the holy spirit and are here judging the wicked one on the throne. They’re proving that this is a divine war where the old serpent doesn’t win. They’ve seen the future of Malawi should they allow bribes.

  • To have eternal and internal peace. No matter how much money one gets through corruption it never births peace, these judges have love for real peace over wealth.

  • To prepare for their higher positions in the government to come. As Jesus said, “those who do as I say will be with me where I’m going”. These judges have chosen to work with a heavenly chosen regime to come and undoubtedly these judges have plans of reforming and building Malawi

  • To make history as clean and real judges of the land since time in memory. Its about legacy, telling the world that justice is available when people need it the most. Its about nyota/medals as every great man craves so much to be recognised.

  • Malawians, these are just few reasons why these judges have exposed the devil but God has more reasons than I can give.

My question though, in this case, has this affected the integrity of the judges and the court case

Malawi President Mutharika faulted for bad mouthing

Mutharika faulted for bad mouthing

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative (CDEDI) has blamed the President, Arthur Peter Mutharika and his counterparts: Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and Saulos Chilima of UTM for their failure to prepare their followers for the results of the presidential election case that is yet to be determined; in their New Year address.

In its press statement released on Thursday, January 2, CDEDI said the three political leaders chose deliberately to beat about the bush on how their supporters should conduct themselves should the judgment of the case not favour them.

Speaking in an interview, Interim Chairperson for the institution, Sylvester Namiwa, added that the three leaders missed an opportunity in their address to communicate messages of peace to Malawians.

“As Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative (CDEDI), we are very disappointed with failure by our political leaders to communicate messages of peace to their followers. This was a missed opportunity for them to address Malawians at this point in time when we are eagerly waiting for the judgment of the elections matter. It was very unfortunate that they all tactically avoided this important message,” said Namiwa.

Namiwa further faulted the President, Arthur Peter Mutharika, for attacking Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) by calling it a terrorist group. Namiwa said such remarks by a Head of State have potential to divide the nation.

In his New Year address, President Arthur Peter Mutharika, stressed that he won the May 21, 2019 tripartite elections and his political opponents who took the elections results to court are only wasting time; instead of letting him develop the country.

Dr Saulos Chilima and Dr Lazarus Chakwera are challenging the results of the May 21, 2019 tripartite elections in court.

Meanwhile, the Constitutional Court in Lilongwe is yet to determine the same.

Malawi President Mutharika labels HRDC as “a terrorist group”

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi President Peter Mutharika says the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) is becoming a terrorist group as its leaders enjoy inflicting terror on innocent Malawians.

In his New Year’s address, Mutharika has labeled the HRDC as a political organization that is slowly degenerating into a terrorist organization.

demos organised by HRDC

In 2019, the HRDC held post-election demonstrations demanding Malawi Electoral Commission chairperson Jane Ansah to resign accusing her of mismanaging the May 21 presidential elections.

The protests turned violent on several occasions with protesters looting shops, burning vehicles and building, attacking police officers and injuring other people.

In his New Year’s address, Mutharika said the grouping incited violence, spread intimidation and victimized innocent people.

“In the name of expressing their rights, they inflicted pain on Malawians. They wanted to create misery and suffering in order to create anger and incite people against government.

“This is being done in the name of democracy but is this the democracy we want?” says Mutharika.

The Malawi leader then appealed to all political leaders to reject violence saying the country will not get anything out of violence.

HRDC is however expected to conduct fresh protests later this month.

Malawi President Mutharika challenged on MHRC Msundwe report

Msundwe residents appearing before the court

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) has rallied behind calls for President Peter Mutharika to order acting Inspector General of Police (IG) Duncan Mwapasa to institute criminal investigations into the rape incidents allegedly committed by police officers deployed at Msundwe,  Mpingu and M’bwatalika in Lilongwe.

HRCC chairperson Robert Mkwezalamba comments comes after  Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) report  established that police officers raped 13 women, defiled one girl and sexually assaulted three under-18 girls during their October 8 2019 operation around the area.

The report says the police officers committed the incidents as the women fled violent scenes.

Mkwezalamba said Police IG should also disclosed names of the errant Cops “for bringing the nation into disrepute.”

He said the acts by Cops is not only heinous but barbaric, cruel and inhuman- especially being perpetrated by the law enforcers.

“These findings therefore, should not only be a concern to the citizens but as a matter of priority to the Head of State and cabinet,” said Mkwezalamba.

MHRC report says there were almost 100 police officers deployed in three teams stationed at M’mbwatalika, Msundwe and Mpingu trading centres along the Lilongwe-Mchinji Road, with others roving in communities where they allegedly tear-gassed people to displace them.

“In the course of their operations of clearing the road, controlling the crowds and making arrests, some police officers ventured into the villages and nearby locations throwing tear gas into houses, beating [people] and breaking into houses.

“As a result, most people, especially men and the youth, fled their village to their gardens, leaving the villages deserted. Some of the women who were left in the villages as others fled or arrived in the village while others fled met police officers who violently beat them, raped and indecently assaulted them,” reads the report.

The officers were led by superintendents Kantchowa, Chisale and Msukwa and Inspector Chipofya (all presented without their first names in the report.)

Malawi Police Service (MPS)  said they will study the report and take appropriate action in accordance with recommendations made.

National Police spokesperson James Kadadzera said police has so far recorded statements from the alleged 17 victims and case dockets on the complaints have been opened.

“The service also instituted its own inquiry to find out the circumstances leading to the same allegations. The report will come out soon and the nation will be updated accordingly,” said Kadadzera in the statement.

Kadadzera therefore assured the nation that police does not condone any form of human rights violations, in particular sexual violence and pledged that the police would deal with any errant officer.

President Mutharika is yet to respond on the report.

But Gender Minister Marry Navitcha rebuked MHRC for releasing the preliminary report before government checking.

HRDC tames snake member Solomon Phiri who secretly met Malawi President Mutharika

HRDC leadership

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-As the common cliché that says send a thief to catch a thief predicted, it is now revealed that the country’s rights body Human Rights Defenders Coalition ( HRDC ) has one committee member whose intentions for the very organisation are evil.

According to an audio clip, that was produced by Charles Ben Longwe, a top member of the same, and has gone vile on the social media, Solomon Phiri, a Southern Region HRDC Chairperson, is the snake that will soon bite the whole HRDC to death.

In the audio clip, Charles Ben Longwe is heard as saying Solomon Phiri on Friday went to Sanjika Palace in Blantyre where he met the President, Arthur Peter Mutharika and discussed with him on the prospects of weakening and defeating the leadership of HRDC.

The clip further challenges and warns Solomon Phiri and the President that no matter how hard they try to usurp HRDC, they will not accomplish their evil plans as HRDC is protected by the will of God.

However, in his reaction to the audio clip, Solomon Phiri has distanced himself from the allegations leveled against him and has challenged HRDC to institute an immediate investigation to uncover the truth behind the speculations.

Phiri has also stated that at the meantime, he will privately be taking necessary steps against Charles Ben Longwe for publishing allegations that have caused him and his immediate family a great distress and endangered his life.

Last week, HRDC Chairperson, Timothy Mtambo, wrote the Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service, Duncan Mwapasa, informing him of the threats that are being directed at him by some unspecified mercenaries.

Malawi President Mutharika engages media on world climate summit…says framework critical for saving planet from further damage

Malawi President Mutharika engages media on world climate summit

MADRID-(MaraviPost)-Malawi President Peter Mutharika who is in Spain for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) summit on Monday told Malawi media that the nation is set to benefit a lot from the gathering by learning on how other nations have managed to deal with effects of climate change globally.

Mutharika was speaking at Intercontinental Hotel in Madrid where he had an interface with members of the Press from Malawi.

Addressing the Malawi Media, Mutharika said he was very happy to be part of conference which has put Malawi’s efforts on the world map in the fight against climate changes and boosted that Malawi was the only Nation from the SADC region which was invited to attend the meeting, based on her numerous intervention to deal with climate change.

The Malawi leader pointed out that the Conference of Parties (COP 25) was organized not for the Nations attending the summit to benefit financially but to learn from others through shared stories and action plans on how best effects of climate change can be dealt with.

Mutharika said time was now for the world to join hands to save the planet from further damage.

He sighted the drying of the rivers in Malawi and low water levels in most of the lakes in Malawi and the rest of the world as a clear signs of bearing the cost of climate change, and that something was to be done to make sure that the situation does not worsen further posing great risks to the world in the future.

“Let me take you back to the old days when were secondary school students, the rivers which we used to cross on our way to schools from Zalewa (Shire river) to around Chingeni were all full of water under bridges, but today when you pass the same rivers, you will notice that they dried up, this is how climate change has changed our nature and if we cannot do something about it now, the situation will be worse in the future and by then I may not be there but I have the change to change that now.” Said Mutharika.

President Mutharika also said the gathering was crucial as it was a follow up of the 2015 Paris agreement which aims at cutting on greenhouse gas emissions which are a major culprit of climate change and a preparatory meeting for the National Plans for 2020 climate conference which will take place in the UK .

Out of the 35 Presidents who were invited from across the world, only 6 African Presidents were invited and all were Present at the summit, this includes President Saadeddine Othmani Of Morroco, President José Mário Vaz of Guinea Bissau, King Mswati III of Eswatin, President Denis Sassou Nguesso of Congo Brazaville, President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika of Malawi and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda

President Mutharika safely lands in Madrid

MADRID-(MaraviPost)-Malawian President Peter Mutharika who left the country through Kamuzu International Airport on Friday morning to attend the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 25), has successfully arrived in Madrid, Spain.

Mutharika is amongst the few five African leaders invited to attend the meeting based on their splendid performance towards climate change in their countries.

This year’s talks will focus on putting the 2015 Paris agreement into practice with the aim of cutting on greenhouse gas emissions which are a major culprit of climate change.

The conference will also be a preparatory meeting for the 2020 climate conference which will take place in the UK where it is expected that long term responses to climate change emergency will be decided.

Addressing the media before departure at the Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, President Mutharika said he would speak on the adverse effects of climate change such as global warming on least developed countries like Malawi.

“There are several challenges that have resulted from climate change such as dwindling water levels in the Shire River and Lake Malawi and floods among others which have adversely affected the country,” he said.

Malawi has also experienced changing rainfall patterns and dry spells which specialists have attributed to climate change.

The UN Climate Change Conference COP 25 will take place under the Presidency of the Government of Chile and will be held with logistical support from the Government of Spain.

The conference is designed to take the next crucial steps in the UN climate change process.

Following agreement on the implementation guidelines of the Paris Agreement at COP 24 in Poland last year, a key objective is to complete several matters with respect to the full operationalization of the Paris Climate Change Agreement.

Malawi President Mutharika faulted for ignoring northern region

Malawi President Mutharika faulted for ignoring northern region

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-A political analyst at the University of Livingstonia, George Allan Phiri, has faulted President Arthur Peter Mutharika for completely ignoring the Northern Region; saying the President is depriving his electorates in the region of their political rights.

Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, Phiri said since 21 May polls results, President Muthalika has not visited the north; despite major activities such as Mzuzu Universit graduation, the Ngoni Cultural Festival, Umthetho and even the fierce fighting of Msakanene and Nkondezi Villages in Nkhata Bay District where about five people died.

“Even though the events were not government oriented, he has also missed major activities like the Ngoni Heritage in the region. In my view, the situation is not healthy. He has always said he was voted by many Malawians in all the regions, then why is he ignoring some of the electorates that voted for him in the north?” Wondered Phiri.

However, State House Press Officer, Mgeme Kalilani has refuted the allegations; saying the President has scheduled tasks to perform in various places across the country and in few weeks time, he will be in the north to perform the same.

Since he was voted again into power on 21 May tripartite elections, President Arthur Peter Mutharika has never stepped his feet into the Northern Region of the country, a situation which has sparked a debate among followers of politics in the country.

His controversial victory during the May 21 polls, is challenged in court by UTM’s leader, Dr Saulos Claus Chilima and Dr Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi Congress Party (MCP). The two allege that the polls were marred with innumerable irregularities; and so there should be a rerun.
