Pres. Mutharika refuses to take action against maize-gate suspects without concrete evidence

President Peter Mutharika has on Saturday vowed to deal with any person involved in the Zambia maize scandal without looking at status or name of the individuals the moment he has concrete evidence.

Malawi Pres. Peter Mutharika: needs concrete evidence to take action against maize-gate suspects.

According to Mutharika Malawians should not expect him firing any maize-gate suspect from his or her position without concrete evidence.

He said that is why he established the commission of inquiry to investigate what really transpired on the ground before taking an action.

“I will not and I cannot take any action against maize-gate suspects out of suspicion. I will need concrete evidence before taking action,” said Mutharika.

While acknowledging the importance of maize to the country, Mutharika asked Malawians to wait for the evidence from the commission of inquiry and stop pressurizing him.

“I know that lives of Malawians depend on maize and that everyone is eager to know what really happened on the maize deal but I urge you to be calm,” he said.

In her remarks, chairperson for the commission retired chief justice Anastasia Msosa asked Malawians to have trust in them.

However, some Malawians including the political pundits and some Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have demanded an inclusive commission of inquiry in a letter they recently wrote President Peter Mutharika.

In the letter, the CSOs also asked President Mutharika to fire Agriculture Minister Dr George Chaponda and ADMARC boss Foster Mulumbe to pave way for the investigation.

However, Chaponda rubbished the call saying he is innocent.

Zambian opposition party ‘UPP’ presents maize-gate evidence to Malawian and Zambian govts

The Zambian opposition party, the United Peoples Party (UPP) has on Wednesday presented the maize-gate evidence to the Malawi and Zambia government, The Maravi Post has established.

Malawi pres. Mutharika: presented with evidence on maize-gate

According to the sourced information, the UPP President Saviour Chishimba who blew the whistle about the rotten maize deal presented the evidence to the Zambian President Edgar Lungu and the Malawian Commission of inquiry.

Apart from presenting the evidence, Chishimba has also told the Zambian President to take the matter seriously and fire two of his ministers who are suspected to be part of the deal.

“With the evidence present to you, may you please fire two of your cabinet ministers that include Minister of Commerce and Agriculture. On top of that come up with investigation on the matter,” said the UPP leader in his address to Edgar Lungu.

The Zambian UPP leader however commended Malawian President for establishing a Commission of Inquiry saying it will help expose the truth.

Still with the same story, it has just been revealed that Malawi’s ADMARC by-passed a number of procurement procedures.

Efforts by The Maravi Post to get the side of the Peter Mutharika-instituted Commission of Inquiry on the maize-gate proved futile.

Meanwhile, Malawi minister of Agriculture Dr George Chaponda refuses to step down to pave way for investigations and has been heard to put the blame on ADMARC.

ADMARC boss Foster Mulumbe strongly denied to issue a comment on the matter saying it is under investigation.

It appears the three-year old Peter Mutharika government is no strange to corruption. It is currently embroiled in another corruption scandal where seven ministers in his government are believed to have looted government coffers during his elder brother late Bingu wa Mutharika government. The current Zambia maze-gate scandal is just one evidence proving that Peter Mutharika has failed in the fight against corruption.
