Mangochi mother arrested for permitting defilement of her 14-year-old daughter

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police in Mangochi district are keeping in custody a 38-year-old woman for allegedly permitting her husband to defile his 14-year-old stepdaughter.

It is reported that the suspect (name withheld to protect the victim) remarried in 2012 and brought her six children including the victim from her previous marriage.

On Friday last week the Senior Resident Magistrate’s (SRM) Court ordered the suspect’s arrest following a confession by the victim during court proceedings that her mother had a hand in her predicament.

The victim revealed that in May 2021 the suspect and her husband who was convicted to 21-year jail term connived to be sleeping with her as a way to secure the suspect’s marriage.

It was also revealed that the suspect and her husband initiated a 5-year contraceptive method (Nor plant) on the victim to make it easier for the stepfather to consistently have unprotected sex with her.

The suspect will appear before court to answer the charge of permitting defilement of her 14-year old daughter on her premises contrary to section 142 of the Penal Code.

Meanwhile, Police in Mangochi have appealed to women in the area to protect their children from all forms of abuse and exploitation.

She hails from Mikundi Village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Mponda in Mangochi.

Malawi’s Mangochi police arrest Mozambican for two motorcycles theft

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police at Namwera Post in Mangochi are keeping in custody a Mozambican national Adam Aidi, 48, for robbing a blue Lifo motorcycle.

According to Police report, the incident occurred on February 5, 2022 at M’baluku Trading Centre in Mangochi.

It is reported that during the morning of the stated date, the suspect posed as a customer and hired a Kabaza operator Rashid Witness, 45, to take him from Katuli Trading Centre to Mangochi District Hospital.

Upon arrival at M’baluku Trading Centre, the suspect convinced the victim to keep the motorcycle behind a certain shop and walk to the hospital.

At the hospital, the suspect left the victim outside then sneaked to M’baluku and bolted with the motorcycle.

After waiting for a longer period, Witness left the hospital premises and went back to M’baluku in order to collect the motorcycle only to be told that it was already taken by Aidi.

The matter was reported at Namwera Police Post who swiftly reacted and successfully arrested the suspect at Idrusi Trading Centre and also recovered the stolen motorcycle at Malombe where it was hidden.

The suspect was also found with another motorcycle which is suspected to have been stolen elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Namwera Police has alerted Mozambican counterparts at Mandimba Police Station who have been hunting for Aidi since September last year. He escaped from their custody into Malawi after committing a series of robberies that side.

Aidi is expected to appear before court on Monday to answer a charge of theft of motorcycle contrary to section 282(i) of the Penal code.

He hails from Lichinga, Niassa Province in Mozambique.

Police in Mangochi have arrested five men suspected to be part of the gang that has been terrorizing and committing serious breakings within Namwera and Katuli areas in the district.

Mangochi Police Spokesperson, Amina Tepani Daudi, said the suspects have been arrested by Namwera Police on Wednesday, 23 June, 2021, at Katuli and they have led to the recovery of stolen items worth K1.5 million.

Following the development, Tepani Daudi said Namwera Police detectives launched investigations which led to the arrest of the key suspect James Gunde, 21, who revealed to have been operating with eight others.

“The same night Police arrested four among Gunde’s accomplices and managed to recover some of the stolen property at Katuli, including 2 Plasma TVs, 78 pieces of zitenje, Genset, mountain bike, hotplate, 3 cellphones, 5 cellphone batteries, amplifier and DVD player among others,” she said.

All the suspects come from traditional authority Katuli in the same district.

Malawian nurse’s beauty triggers fierce fight: One man in the cooler, another in hospital

 BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Former Chairperson of the cultural grouping Mulhakho wa Alhomwe, Muchanakhwaye Mpuluka, is in the hands of Mangochi Police for allegedly shooting a secret lover to his girlfriend.

According to Mangochi Police Station deputy spokesperson, Mpuluka, 39, shot the man whom he found at his girlfriend’s house with a STEYA M9-A1 rifle twice, injuring him in on the right foot in the process.

The incident occurred at Mwanyama Village in Mangochi on Wednesday night, the police report indicates.

The victim has been identified as Edward Mbalasa, 35, of Mapira Village, T/A Mponda in the district.

According to the crime report, Mbalasa is in a love affair with Vanilla Makhuli, 25, a nurse who works at Mangochi District Hospital, who is also in a relationship with Mpuluka.

The report elaborates that on Wednesday night, Mpuluka arrived at his girlfriend’s house, only to find the victim chatting with the woman inside her bedroom.

Daudi said in the course of the confrontation, Mpuluka fired some gunshots, injuring the victim.

It is also documented in the report that the former Mulhakho wa Alhomwe Chairperson, fired three times at Mbalasa’s Suzuki Swift motor vehicle registration number BW 3417 damaging it in the process before he left the crime scene.

Mbalasa was treated as an outpatient at Mangochi District Hospital.

Daudi confirmed that police found two empty cartilages on the scene have since recovered the rifle.

Mpuluka handed himself over to Police on Thursday morning and he will appear in court today to face charges of acts intending to cause grievous harm and malicious damage.

Mpuluka hails from Mlotho Village Traditional Authority Mwambo in Zomba District, Makhuli is from Laiti Village Traditional Authority, Bvumbwe in Thyolo District while the victim (Mbalasa) comes from Mapira Village, Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi.

Mpuluka can be well remembered for his seven-days ultimatum to the former Member of Parliament for Mulanje West Patricia Kaliati to apologize to the Lomwes, over the remarks she made during a rally at Masintha ground in Lilongwe when she parted ways with the then ruling Democratic Progressive Party and joined formed Chilima movement.

At the rally, Kaliati alleged that Paramount Chief Ngolongoliwa pioneered the Chilima Movement, to usher Vice President Saulos Chilima into power in 2019.

Malawian man dead after a fight over Cigarette

Police in Mangochi district are keeping in custody a 38-year-old man, Jackson Zeleson for allegedly murdering a 35-year-old man, Samson Isaac Ndeule after the two fought over a cigarette.

The incident occurred at Malembo Trading Centre.

Police say the two were drinking beer together at one of the bars at the Trading Centre when Ndeule asked Zeleson to share a cigarette, a request that the other person refused.

Then, a quarrel erupted between them resulting into a fight.

The fight was ceased by some good Samaritans at the bar but this did not please Zeleson who later followed Ndeule to his house where they started fighting again.

In course of the fight, Zeleson pushed Ndeule who fell down and became unconscious.

Following the incident, Ndeule was taken to Malembo Health Centre where he was pronounced dead.

The matter was then reported to Monkey-bay Police Station and later the suspect was arrested and is expected to appear before court soon to answer murder charges.

Malawi Police sensitize communities in Mangochi on girl-child rights

In a bid to curb increase of child marriages and teen pregnancies in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, Mangochi Police Station on Wednesday organized a sensitisation meeting aimed at advocating for the rights of the girl child.

The meeting took place at Koche Teachers Development Centre (TDC) in the district.

The gathering brought together members of School Management Committee (SMC), Parents Teacher’s Association (PTA), Mother Support Group and Michesi crime prevention committee among others.

Senior Superintendent Mwizamose Nyoni said the COVID-19 pandemic has come with its own challenges which require concerted efforts.

“There have been reports that since the closure of schools due to COVID-19 pandemic there’s an upsurge of child marriages and teen pregnancies in our district. This is a sad development considering the fact that the Police are not aware of some of these violations on child rights.

“We have brought this complaint box to create a flexible platform for reporting abuses, because some of these nasty behaviours are done by close family members and are not reported.” Explained Nyoni.

She further called for collaborative efforts in the fight against child abuse and promotion of girl child rights.

She said: “Let us always remember that any person who is under the age of 18 is regarded as a child and it’s everyone’s duty to protect them. Those who molest these young girls deserve to be punished so let’s work hand in hand in fighting against the vice.”

Deputy publicist for the Station, Sub Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi, told MBC Online that the complaint box has been placed at Maldeco trading Centre and will cater for nine villages; Chisigere, Chikundo, Mpaliro, Mtiyala, Mtimbuka, Michesi, Chipoka ,Chipala and Nansenga..

Nyoni also urged the members to implement the district by laws on girls education, sexual rights and reproductive health.

The Primary Education Advisor(PEA) for Koche Zone, Mrs Babra Mtepuka, commended the Police for their unrelented fight against child abuses and for handing over the complaint box.

“This box will be used as a confidential way of reporting matters of concern which many young girls are facing in the area. The box will be emptied once in every week at Koche Police Unit in the presence of selected members and HRDC representatives,” said Mtepuka.

Mangochi Police also handed over a pedal bicycle donated by UNICEF to an oversight committee for Koche police post which has just been elected to combat crime and violence.

MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)-The Mangochi first grade magistrate court, on Friday convicted and sentenced a 56-year old man to eight years imprisonment with hard labour for the offence of defilement, which is contrary to section 138(1) of penal code.

Mangochi Police Station deputy spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi, identified the convict as Wisiki Maxwell who had been committing the crime since February this year.
According to the police publicist, the court heard tha the victim (a 14-year old girl), is Maxwell’s wife  niece, and has been staying at their home for a long time.
The court further learned that in February the convict asked the niece to accompany him to the bush where he burns charcoal. While at the bush, Maxwell commanded the victim to undress and lie down of which she obeyed then he forced himself on her. The court further heard that Maxwell then gave the niece K1,000.00 and he advised her not to reveal what they had done to anyone.
Maxwell continued to abuse the niece, to the extent that she stopped going to school. He said her parents became suspicious and when they questioned her, she revealed that she had been feeling tired especially in the morning due to frequency of what she was doing with the accused person.
Upon hearing this, her parents reported the matter to Monkey-Bay Police Post, who arrested him and issued a medical report and the results from Monkey-Bay Health Centre confirmed about the defilement.
“Although Maxwell pleaded not guilty to the charge, the state through prosecutor Mc Anthony Phiri, paraded five witnesses against him, until he was convicted.
In mitigation to his sentence, Maxwell told court to be liniment and to consider his old age . However, the prosecutor pleaded for a stiffer punishment.
When passing judgement his worship first grade magistrate Ronald M’bwana, found him guilty to the charge, and he expressed concern over the accused person’s conduct adding that, the accused person went ahead and molested the child although the government and other stakeholders are advocating the protection of girls from various forms of abuse, including sexual abuse and exploitation.
“The judge then slapped Maxwell to eight years imprisonment with hard labour,” said Daudi.
The convict Maxwell hails from Kantenga village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Nankumba in Mangochi district.

Tragedy: Road accident claims five lives in Mangochi

MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)- Five female passengers have died in a fatal road accident which occurred on Wednesday at round 15: 00 hours at Mpatsa Farm along Golomoti-Monkey-Bay road in Mangochi district.

Mangochi police station deputy public relations officer Amina Tepani Daudi, confirmed the incident saying the motor vehicle registration number BT1381 minibus Nissan caravan driven by Vincent Mwanza, was coming from Golomoti heading to Monkey-Bay with sixteen passengers on board.

Daudi said the 42-Year old driver, upon arrival at Mpatsa farm the outer cover of the left tyre accidentally unhinged from the vehicle.

Eventually Mwanza lost control of the minibus as it was at high speed; hence he swerved to the extreme far side of the road where it overturned three times.

The police publicist added that following the impact of the accident the passengers including Mrs. Charity Kaunda, 31 from Chembe village stained open fracture of the left leg, Mrs. Olivia Chikondi 39 of Nsumbi village sustained head injuries and they both died on the spot.

Other passengers identified as Violet Thomas 39 Mrs. Chesi, 35 and Latifah Umali 1-year old, sustained head injuries and were rushed to Monkey-Bay Health Centre where they died while receiving treatment.

“The other two passengers sustained serious injuries and are still receiving treatment at Mangochi District Hospital while 9 passengers escaped with minor injuries. The minibus was extensively damaged and the driver sustained a minor cuts on his head and is in Police custody.

“The Police are therefore advising the drivers to follow road safety measures in order to reduce road accidents in the district. All five deceased hailed from Tradition Authority (T.A) Nankumba in Mangochi district,” Daudi said

Two Mangochi brothers arrested for murdering son

MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi police in Mangochi are keeping in custody two brothers for allegedly murdering a 37 year-old man who was a son of one of the two brothers.

Mangochi Police Station Spokesperson Rodrick Maida, identified the deceased as Hijo Smart while the two suspects are Layne Julius, 74 and Naliwa Ulamba aged 70.

Maida told The Maravi Post that the deceased, who was the son to Julius on March 15, set his father’s house on fire and went away with four goats.

The development angered the father who then together with his brother Ulamba, chased the deceased until he was caught.

The police publicist added that Julius hacked the son with a panga knife that caused deep cuts on his head that eventually led to his death.

“Post-mortem carried at Namwera Health Centre in the district, revealed that the cause of Smart’s death was due to excessive loss of blood.

“We immediately arrested the two who happen to suspects. They still remain in our custody waiting for a murder trial before a court of law”, Maida said.

Both the suspects and the deceased hailed from Matamanda Village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Bwananyambi in Mangochi district.
