Manhunt underway for killers of 5-year-old Brian Alabi in Malawi

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police Service in Mangochi are hunting for the individuals responsible for the brutal murder of 5-year-old Brian Alabi.

Speaking with MaraviPost Mangochi Police Public Relations Officer Amina Tepani Daudi, says the young boy’s body was discovered buried in a garden near his home in Mkwesa Village, Traditional Authority Bwananyambi.

Daudi added that Brian was left playing with other children while his mother and neighbors were tending to their vegetable gardens.

When Brian’s mother, Latifa Bilutoni, returned home, he was nowhere to be found.

A search party was organized, with the help of village elders and community members, but initial efforts proved futile.

It was not until the next morning that Brian’s body was discovered.

A dog was seen barking and digging in a nearby garden, leading villagers to investigate further.

Upon closer inspection, human fingers were seen protruding from the soil, and the body was later confirmed to be that of Brian.

The police were quick to respond, and officers from Chiponde Police Unit, accompanied by a clinical officer from Chiponde Health Centre, rushed to the scene.

The body was exhumed, and multiple injuries were observed, including a tightly tied cloth around the neck, punctured eyes, and bleeding from the nose and mouth.

A postmortem examination revealed that Brian died from strangulation, secondary to a twisted neck and head injuries.

The police have launched a manhunt and are appealing to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects to come forward.

Over-speeding vehicle kills Malawi Police officer Andrew Kandulu in Mangochi

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-A marine police officer who was based at Chimwala Police Unit in Mangochi has died after being hit by a motor vehicle.

The incident occurred on the evening of March 19,2022 at Mwalija Trading Centre in the district.

Mangochi Police Publicist, Amina Daudi, said the deceased is identified as Sub Inspector Andrew Kandulu, 42, from Namaso-Bay Village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Nankumba in Mangochi.

“The accident involved a Voxy Wagon Amarok DC, registration number BZ 8305. It was being driven by Emmanuel Namagonya, 41. He was coming from the direction of Liwonde heading towards Mangochi Boma.

“Upon arrival at Mwalija Trading Centre due to over-speeding, Namagonya lost control of the motor vehicle and hit the officer who was crossing from left to the right side of the road, ” said Daudi.

Following the impact, Kandulu sustained head injuries and was rushed to Mangochi District Hospital where he died while receiving treatment.

In the meantime, the driver is in police custody waiting for court proceedings.

This is a second incident in a space of month.

On 17 February 2022, a cruising Sienta vehicle also hit a female Police Officer in the district and she was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Police have since then warned all reckless drivers in the country that they will face the law.

Malawi’s Mangochi Clinician George Gwagwala jailed 19 years for raping patient

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Mangochi Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court this week convicted and sentenced Mangochi District Hospital Clinical Officer 19-years imprisonment with hard labour for raping a 20- year woman.

The convicted identified as George Gwagwala aged 31 hails from Helemani Village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Khwethemule in Thyolo.

Mangochi Police Public Relations Officer Amina Tepani Daudi confirmed the conviction of the clinical officer on Wednesday October 13, 2021.

According to Station Prosecution Officer, Amos Mwase, the convict was working as a clinician at the health facility and on August 8, 2021, the victim went to the hospital for medical attention as she was having an ankle pain and she met the convict on duty at the casualty ward.

Mwase then told the victim and another patient to follow him and he took them to his hostel.

The first to be assisted was the male patient after that the convict invited the female victim into the room and surprisingly the clinician locked the door and forced himself on his patient, consequently injuring her and tearing her clothes in the process.

The matter was then reported at Yoneco Office who brought the victim to Mangochi Police Station where she was issued a referral letter and the results from the same hospital confirmed that the victim was raped.

Gwagwala pleaded not guilty to the charge after appearing in Court which prompted the state to parade four witnesses who testified against him.

In mitigation, Gwagwala asked for the court’s leniency citing that his family invested a lot of money in his studies and all would be wasted if he would be sent to prison which was quashed by the state saying that, the convict took advantage of the victim’s condition and also violated rights of the patient.

The state added that the clinician’s immoral behaviour could also dent the image of medical workers hence the need for a stiff and custodial sentence.

Passing sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Rodrick Michongwe concurred with the state, hence the 19-year sentence to serve as a lesson to other would be offenders.

Heartless Malawi’s Mangochi police officers brutally hack teenage boy while in cell

MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)-A 13-year-old boy in Mangochi is nursing a deep cut wound on his hand which he is said to have sustained while being beaten by an officer at Chiponde police Unit who was using a Panga Knife.

Mother to the boy, Annie Shaibu, told this publication on Saturday, morning, August 21, 2021 that their son was picked on 8th August 2021, for suspecting to have stolen a mobile phone.

Shaibu also claimed that a police officer who was interrogating him used a panga knife to beat him and in the process hacked him.

Mangochi Police Station Spokesperson, Amina Tepani Daudi, has confirmed the incident saying the station received the complaint.

Daudi added that the station is also investigating police officers on the matter.

Malawi’s primary school teacher jailed for stabbing ex-wife

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Mangochi Senior Resident Magistrate’s court has convicted and sentenced Dickson Lanjesi, 27, a teacher at Mtamila Full Primary School, for nearly sending his ex-wife to the early grave.

According to Mangochi Police spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi, Mangochi Police Prosecutor Sub Inspector Emmanuel Kambwiri told the court that the couple divorced in December 2020.

This did not go down well with the convict who started sending intimidating messages to the ex-wife who is also a teacher at Mtengeza Primary School.

 Prosecutor Kambwiri added that during the month of March 2021, the two were counseled at Mangochi Police Victim Support Unit for the same after the ex-wife lodged a complaint and Lanjesi promised to change his behavior.

He failed to make good his promise and visited the ex-wife without her knowledge.

He found her sitting on the veranda and immediately he produced a knife and stabbed her on the neck before he escaped.

The victim was rushed to Mangochi District Hospital where she battled for her life for 2 months.

The matter was reported at Mangochi Police Station leading to Lanjesi’s arrest.

Appearing in court, the accused person pleaded guilty to the charges of intimidation and acts intended to cause grievous harm contrary to Sections 88 and 235 of the Penal code, respectively.

In his mitigation, Lanjesi asked for the court’s leniency saying that he was a teacher and his career would be ruined if sent to prison.

The state quashed his plea, justifying that his intentions were evil and could have cost an innocent person’s life hence he deserved a custodial sentence.

When passing judgement, Senior Resident Magistrate Joshua Nkhono concurred with the state and sentenced him to 18 months for the first count of intimidation and 36 months for the second count and both sentences to run concurrently.

Mangochi Man arrested for illegal possession of live ammunitions 

MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)- Police in Monkey-Bay, in the lakeshore district of Mangochi, on March 26, 2017, arrested a 27-year-old man for the illegal possession of live ammunitions. This is contrary to section 12 and section 16 (2) of fire arms, stipulated in the Laws of Malawi.

Mangochi Police Station deputy spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi, identified the suspect as Umali Maliki who was intercepted at Mtakataka turnoff roadblock.

Daudi told The Maravi Post that in the course of duty, officers cornered a lorry registration number CZ1105, that came at the roadblock from the direction of Golomoti heading to Mangochi. There were several passengers onboard who Police found out, were coming from South Africa.

The police publicist said following the police search, six rounds of live ammunition were found in a bag belonging to the suspect. The ammunitions are suspected to be for use on FN, MK4 and R4 riffles, which are assault weapons.

“The police immediately arrested Maliki after he failed to produce proper documents, and the Police also seized the ammunitions as exhibit. The suspect will appear before the court to answer the charge levied against him,” said Daudi.

The suspect Maliki hails from Nkonde village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Nyambi in Machinga district.

Tragedy: Road accident claims five lives in Mangochi

MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)- Five female passengers have died in a fatal road accident which occurred on Wednesday at round 15: 00 hours at Mpatsa Farm along Golomoti-Monkey-Bay road in Mangochi district.

Mangochi police station deputy public relations officer Amina Tepani Daudi, confirmed the incident saying the motor vehicle registration number BT1381 minibus Nissan caravan driven by Vincent Mwanza, was coming from Golomoti heading to Monkey-Bay with sixteen passengers on board.

Daudi said the 42-Year old driver, upon arrival at Mpatsa farm the outer cover of the left tyre accidentally unhinged from the vehicle.

Eventually Mwanza lost control of the minibus as it was at high speed; hence he swerved to the extreme far side of the road where it overturned three times.

The police publicist added that following the impact of the accident the passengers including Mrs. Charity Kaunda, 31 from Chembe village stained open fracture of the left leg, Mrs. Olivia Chikondi 39 of Nsumbi village sustained head injuries and they both died on the spot.

Other passengers identified as Violet Thomas 39 Mrs. Chesi, 35 and Latifah Umali 1-year old, sustained head injuries and were rushed to Monkey-Bay Health Centre where they died while receiving treatment.

“The other two passengers sustained serious injuries and are still receiving treatment at Mangochi District Hospital while 9 passengers escaped with minor injuries. The minibus was extensively damaged and the driver sustained a minor cuts on his head and is in Police custody.

“The Police are therefore advising the drivers to follow road safety measures in order to reduce road accidents in the district. All five deceased hailed from Tradition Authority (T.A) Nankumba in Mangochi district,” Daudi said

Polytechnic student caught stealing in People’s Shop

 

Poly student nabbed by police

A second year student at the Malawi Polytechnic is in Mangochi police custody after being found stealing assorted items in the district’s People’s Shop.

Mangochi police spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi identified the suspect as a 32 year old Victor Owen of Chikwati village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwambo in  Zomba district.

Daudi said this happened on Friday around evening hours.

According to the Mangochi police spokesperson, some of the stolen items include 23 tablets of Protex soap, 3 packets of  Kamba, 8 bottles of Cocoa,  2 loaves of bread and others.

Daudi said the suspect carried some of the stolen items in the basket while others in the jacket he putted on.

“It was the Shop Manager who called the police and according to the manager all the stolen items were amounted to K45,000.00,” said Daudi.

The suspect will appear before the court soon to answer the charges shop lifting. Some quarters believe that the suspect planned to use the stolen items at the school which is expected to open next month.
