MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)- Five female passengers have died in a fatal road accident which occurred on Wednesday at round 15: 00 hours at Mpatsa Farm along Golomoti-Monkey-Bay road in Mangochi district.
Mangochi police station deputy public relations officer Amina Tepani Daudi, confirmed the incident saying the motor vehicle registration number BT1381 minibus Nissan caravan driven by Vincent Mwanza, was coming from Golomoti heading to Monkey-Bay with sixteen passengers on board.
Daudi said the 42-Year old driver, upon arrival at Mpatsa farm the outer cover of the left tyre accidentally unhinged from the vehicle.
Eventually Mwanza lost control of the minibus as it was at high speed; hence he swerved to the extreme far side of the road where it overturned three times.
The police publicist added that following the impact of the accident the passengers including Mrs. Charity Kaunda, 31 from Chembe village stained open fracture of the left leg, Mrs. Olivia Chikondi 39 of Nsumbi village sustained head injuries and they both died on the spot.
Other passengers identified as Violet Thomas 39 Mrs. Chesi, 35 and Latifah Umali 1-year old, sustained head injuries and were rushed to Monkey-Bay Health Centre where they died while receiving treatment.
“The other two passengers sustained serious injuries and are still receiving treatment at Mangochi District Hospital while 9 passengers escaped with minor injuries. The minibus was extensively damaged and the driver sustained a minor cuts on his head and is in Police custody.
“The Police are therefore advising the drivers to follow road safety measures in order to reduce road accidents in the district. All five deceased hailed from Tradition Authority (T.A) Nankumba in Mangochi district,” Daudi said
