MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)- Police in Monkey-Bay, in the lakeshore district of Mangochi, on March 26, 2017, arrested a 27-year-old man for the illegal possession of live ammunitions. This is contrary to section 12 and section 16 (2) of fire arms, stipulated in the Laws of Malawi.
Mangochi Police Station deputy spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi, identified the suspect as Umali Maliki who was intercepted at Mtakataka turnoff roadblock.
Daudi told The Maravi Post that in the course of duty, officers cornered a lorry registration number CZ1105, that came at the roadblock from the direction of Golomoti heading to Mangochi. There were several passengers onboard who Police found out, were coming from South Africa.
The police publicist said following the police search, six rounds of live ammunition were found in a bag belonging to the suspect. The ammunitions are suspected to be for use on FN, MK4 and R4 riffles, which are assault weapons.
“The police immediately arrested Maliki after he failed to produce proper documents, and the Police also seized the ammunitions as exhibit. The suspect will appear before the court to answer the charge levied against him,” said Daudi.
The suspect Maliki hails from Nkonde village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Nyambi in Machinga district.
