BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s Malawi Union of the Blind (MUB) has called on government stakeholders to make sure that strategies put in place to contain the spread of Covid-19 pandemic people with disabilities are included.
MUB Executive director Ezekiel Kumwenda said this during the commemoration of world literacy day for United Nations Education scientific and cultural organization (UNESCO) in Blantyre under the theme “Books: A window into the world Convid-19”.
Kumwenda commended stakeholders and organisations for reading materials freely available and electronically to persons with disabilities especially blind and partially sighted people.
“Malawi union of the blind is calling on government education institutions, service providers and other stakeholders to ensure that the materials made available electronically such as books Covid-19 related and other relevant information”, said Kumwenda.
“According to the United Nations,now more than ever at the moment globally most schools are closed and people are having limit time spent out of their homes ,the power of books can be leveraged to combat isolation hence the need for on- line learning to be inclusive towards people with disabilities,” he added.
Kumwenda outlined: “Parents, teachers and guardians who are blind, partially sighted or otherwise print and electronic data disabled must be fully accessible information. As the Malawi is developing devices to cope with the effects of the pandemic and eventually eradicate it.
“MUB will continue to be interactive with all players as far is Covid-19 is concerned to ensure that persons with disabilities are inclusive in all avenues.
Meanwhile government through the ministry of education and Mobil phone service providers have joined hands to offer learning data academically.
