
Persistent rainfall that has been pelting Karonga district since Saturday, is reported to have killed three people and injured many, Maravi Post has learned.
The rains, which turned into floods, has also displaced over 2,000 households as well as destroying thousands of hectares of crops, and killing over one hundred livestock.
The most affected villages are those in Group Village Headman Mwenitete, Mwambetanya, Mwakasangiro, Nsomba, and Ali Fundi among others in the areas of Traditional Authority Kilipula, Mwakaboko, and Kyungu.
Speaking in an interview, GVH Mwenitete, identified one of the deceased as a 4 year old boy from his area, while he failed to identify the other bodies of the two remaining women.
Mwenitete told The Maravi Post that over 30 cattle and 80 pigs have been killed due to the heavy the rains.
He then described this as a historical disaster in the district.
“We have never experienced such kind of disaster,” Mwenitete said.
The people affected by the incessant rains, are currently seeking refuge in Churches and schools.
Meanwhile, Karonga north shadow MP for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), who is also a renowned district business man, has injected almost K1 million in bailing-out money to offer relief to the affected families.
Speaking to The Maravi Post when he inspected the areas and affected people, Mwambande urged them to be strong.
Traditional leaders in the affected areas thanked Mwambande for the help. He gave to the affected people. They said the party through Mwambande, were the first to come up with assistance to the affected people and areas.
