BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Southern Region Press Club (SRPC) has planted over 2,000 trees in Blantyre Rural at Whwayo Village under Traditional Authority Kapeni, marking a practical step by the media fraternity toward promoting environmental conservation and climate resilience.
The tree planting exercise, held on Friday, brought together journalists, community members and local leaders, highlighting growing collaboration between the media and grassroots communities in addressing environmental challenges.
Minister of Information, who was the guest of honour, Shadric Namalomba urged Malawians to rethink tree planting, describing it as an economic venture rather than a seasonal activity carried out for compliance or symbolism.
Namalomba said tree planting should be treated as a long-term investment capable of generating income while protecting the environment, noting that properly managed trees can later be sold as timber or other forest products.
He added that attaching economic value to tree planting would motivate individuals and communities to care for trees beyond planting, ultimately improving survival rates and contributing to climate change mitigation efforts.
The minister also commended SRPC for leading by example, saying journalists play a critical role in shaping public attitudes and influencing behavioural change through both reporting and action.
Namalomba observed that initiatives like the Whwayo tree planting exercise demonstrate that the media can actively participate in national development rather than remaining observers of public affairs.
Speaking during the event, SRPC Chairperson Ronald Amos said journalists are prepared to be part of practical solutions to environmental problems affecting the country.
Amos noted that environmental degradation has direct consequences on livelihoods, food security and economic stability, making it imperative for the media to take an active interest in environmental protection.
He added that SRPC’s involvement in tree planting reflects the club’s commitment to promoting environmental awareness both through direct action and responsible, development oriented reporting.
