Sudan’s war on women: The number of people in need of sexual violence support quadruples as abuse of women and girls becomes the blueprint of war, three years on

As the war in Sudan enters its fourth year with sexual violence as one of its most defining features, UN Women calls for the protection of all women and girls, accountability for all perpetrators, and a major scale-up in funding for women-led front-line response.

New York, USA, 15 April 2026- /African Media Agency (AMA)/- Sexual violence continues to surge across Sudan, with the number of women and girls requiring support after experiencing gender-based violence nearly doubling in two years and quadrupling since the start of the war three years ago, according to a new Gender Alert: The Impact of the War in Sudan on Women and Girls, published today by UN Women.

On 10 December 2024 in Sudan, Omnia [NAME CHANGED] peers through the window during a visit to a women’s organization. Displaced from her home due to fighting and threats, she lives with the trauma of being kidnapped, threatened, beaten and raped by armed men. To support her healing, Omnia is receiving mental health and psychosocial support from a women’s organization. Photo: UNICEF/UNI754435/Tess Ingram

The analysis draws on evidence from 85 women-led organizations operating across Sudan, including on the frontlines of the war in Darfur and Kordofan. Two-thirds of women front-line responders reported a significant increase in sexual violence in 2025, and half reported further escalation in 2026, according to new survey data featured in the alert.

“Women and girls are being raped and killed in their homes, and as they flee, seek food, water and medical care. The use of sexual violence has been embedded in the blueprint of Sudan’s war”, said Anna Mutavati, UN Women Regional Director for East and Southern Africa.

More than 4.3 million women and girls are now displaced inside Sudan, whilst 17.1 million require humanitarian assistance in 2026. Yet for many, especially in active conflict areas, there is limited or no access to food, shelter, or medical care. More than two-thirds of women working for women-led organizations on the front lines of the humanitarian response witnessed a significant increase in a lack of access to basic essential services in 2025.

All violations designed to inflict terror, humiliation and control over women and girls are compounded by blockades and ongoing instability and are being carried out with widespread impunity. “Ending this war means ending the impunity that sustains it and recognizing that there can be no peace whilst sexual violence remains one of its most calculated and cruelest tactics”, said Mutavati.

Women-led organizations assessed in the alert are reaching nearly 20 million people in need across Sudan. In conditions that are increasingly incompatible with basic survival, they are providing food to families, medical care and psychosocial support to survivors of sexual violence, mediating local conflicts, negotiating humanitarian access in places where formal systems have collapsed and international actors cannot reach.

Almost all (99 per cent) of surveyed women-led organizations in Sudan report implementation challenges linked to funding shortages, impediments caused by authorities, and insecurity. Some 85 per cent of surveyed women-led organizations in Sudan report being affected by funding reductions or cuts in 2025. Women working on the front lines face threats and targeted attacks, with one in five surveyed women working for women-led organizations having reported receiving threats. There has been no meaningful participation of Sudanese woman as negotiators in official peace talks over the past three years.

UN Women is on the ground in Sudan delivering life-saving support to women and girls, including protection services, psychosocial support and essential supplies. UN Women calls for the protection of civilians and the full, safe, and meaningful inclusion of women in humanitarian response, including direct support for women-led efforts.

UN Women calls for accountability for perpetrators, access to justice for victims and survivors, and the full, equal and meaningful participation of women in peace processes and decision-making.

Every Celebrity Cameo in Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras Tour’ Docuseries So Far

Tons of celebrities attended Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour throughout its nearly two-year run — and some of them also pop up in her new Disney+ docuseries, Taylor Swift: The End of an Era.

The six-part special debuted on Disney+ December 12 and features cameo appearances from Swift’s family members as well as some of her more famous pals. In the first episode, for example, the pop star’s longtime friend and collaborator Ed Sheeran appears before her London show.

When Swift played at London’s Wembley Stadium in August 2024, Sheeran joined her during the surprise song portion of the set, and the duo performed two of their duets: “Everything Has Changed” and “End Game.”

The End of an Era chronicles the latter half of The Eras Tour, which kicked off in Glendale, Arizona, in March 2023. After 149 shows in 51 cities across five continents, Swift wrapped up the tour in Vancouver, Canada, in December 2024. A separate documentary chronicling the last concert, titled The Eras Tour: The Final Show, also dropped on December 12.

Biggest Revelations From Episodes 1 and 2 of Taylor Swift’s ‘End of an Era’

Additional episodes of The End of an Era will premiere each Friday on Disney+ through December 26.

Swift’s now-fiancé, Travis Kelce, doesn’t appear on camera in the first two episodes, but his voice is audible during two scenes in episode 1 where they talk on the phone before and after her first concert after her Vienna shows were canceled because of a planned terror attack.

In episode 4, Kelce appeared in behind-the-scenes footage as he rehearsed his cameo appearance during one of Swift’s London shows. “The lights are never too bright for Travis,” Swift gushed. “As a player, he can, like, slow down time in the most stressful moments, and that’s exactly what we saw on stage. He got out there and was the most charming, delightful performer you could ever be on the stage with. Like, his instincts, he’s just so magically entertaining.”

Swift’s longtime friend and collaborator appears in the first episode, meeting her backstage before her first August 2024 London date to briefly rehearse before his surprise appearance later in the evening. When Swift confesses that she felt “hunted” after the Vienna situation, Sheeran offers words of support.

“I feel like people have forgotten that, like, you’re a human being amongst all of this as well,” he tells his friend before they start practicing “Everything Has Changed.”

Florence Welch

Florence + The Machine frontwoman Florence Welch joined Swift on stage for the final London Eras show, and episode 2 reveals how they quickly added “Florida!!!” to the set. Welch, who reveals she had “never done” a stage lift in her career before The Eras Tour, was initially shocked by the scale of her surprise appearance.

“I have performed on big stages, but this is not [the same],” Welch admits in a confessional interview. “I thought I’d just show up and I’d run around, because that’s what I do at my own shows. I just show up and I just run around. … When I got there, it was like, ‘OK, now this is your choreo.’ I was like, ‘Oh, no, no, wait, wait, you have me confused, I don’t do this. I’m gonna f*** this up.’”

Later, Welch explains why she and Swift connect as friends, saying, “We’re similar in that the persona is huge but the person is soft, and so I think that’s why we get along. Externally, the thing is really big, but when we’re together, we’re just, like, silly and goofy.”

Seeing her friend on stage, however, showed Welch the difference between the person she knows in real life and the star.

“The feeling of coming up for the first time in that lift, it was kind of like landing on Mars. Because I’d never seen the stage lit up before, the sound of the crowd. That was really extraordinary,” Welch recalls. “You see this cultural moment from the outside, and I suddenly was, like, inside of it. It was wild but it was really fun and completely terrifying. Also, Taylor’s my friend, and I know her as this, like, very cozy person, and I came out of that lift and I was like, ‘Oh, my God, it’s f***in’ Taylor Swift.”

Former Eras Tour opener Sabrina Carpenter appeared in episode 4 of the docuseries to rehearse her surprise song cameo with Swift (which happened at one of the New Orleans shows in October 2024). The duo performed a mashup of Carpenter’s hits “Please Please Please” and “Espresso” and Swift’s “Is It Over Now?”

“I felt like a real big idiot ’cause the first time you sent me the first version, which was so genius, it didn’t process that the ‘takeout coffee’ line [from ‘Is It Over Now?’] really fits with ‘Espresso’ until I literally was in the car on the way here, and I was like, ‘She’s so smart,’” Carpenter told her friend. “But yeah, that was a big blonde moment for me. It took me a day.”

Swift, meanwhile, was quick to praise the younger pop star’s talents and rapid rise to fame following the release of “Espresso” in 2024.

“Sabrina is just like a shooting star. She’s so smart, she knows exactly how to entertain people in the way that they want, in the moment that she’s in,” Swift said. “She’s just, like, battling herself for No. 1 on the charts all summer. And when you see that happen, you’re just like, ‘Go! Fly higher!’ And then it’s even cooler when someone like this will circle back and bless us with their magic.”

4 Turtle Island Liberation Members Busted in New Year’s Eve Bombing Plot

Federal authorities claim they have foiled what would have been a series of coordinated New Year’s Eve bombings targeting five different locations across Los Angeles.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced the arrests of four alleged members of an extremist group called the Turtle Island Liberation Front, a pro-Palestinian anti-government organization, who investigators allege organized the thwarted terror plot.

Arrested were Audrey Illeene Carroll, 30; Zachary Aaron Page, 32; Dante Gaffield, 24; and Tina Lai, who is 41. All four are charged with conspiracy and possession of an unregistered destructive device, according to court filings accessed by Us Weekly.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said that additional charges are expected to be filed against Carroll, Page, Gaffield and Lai during a press conference on Monday, December 15.

“The Turtle Island Liberation Front — a far-left, pro-Palestine, anti-government, and anti-capitalist group — was preparing to conduct a series of bombings against multiple targets in California beginning on New Year’s Eve,” Attorney General Pam Bondi alleged in a statement. “The group also planned to target ICE agents and vehicles.”

The plot involved placing explosive devices in backpacks that would be dropped at five sites. The chosen sites were associated with two U.S. companies, officials said without naming them.

Authorities claim that the four were arrested on Friday, December 12, after they were caught in the desert just east of Los Angeles, where they had planned to test out improvised explosive devices.
Agents found the four in possession of “precursor chemicals” and alleged that they were also going to assemble bombs at the desert site. A surveillance plane captured the moment the Los Angeles FBI’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team and agents from the FBI moved in on the group to arrest them.

FBI’s Katherine Renee Kane Says Finale Gave Tiff Closure After Hobbs’ Death

The Turtle Island Liberation Front also is accused of discussing pipe bomb attacks on ICE agents, which they were planning for January and February 2026. Carroll is alleged to have said the group “would take some of them out and scare the rest of them.”

The FBI released a series of photos from a search of Carroll’s home on Monday, which showed posters and materials associated with the group, including one reading “DEATH TO ICE” and another reading “DEATH TO AMERICA, LONG LIVE TURTLE ISLAND & PALESTINE.”

According to the criminal complaint, Carroll allegedly told an FBI informant that she has a “notebook where I wrote down multiple plans that never happened … so it’s like my terrorist diary.”

In the court filings, Carrol said that she had a contact who could find unregistered guns for the group. She also said a member of the Turtle Island Liberation Front is a former military service member who might be able to obtain weapon parts.

“The successful disruption of this plot is a powerful testament to the strength of our unified response,” said LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, adding that work through allied agencies “prevented a potential tragedy and reaffirmed our shared commitment to safeguarding our communities.”

The FBI believes others could have been involved in organizing the terror plot and will continue to investigate the group.

Taylor and Travis Share Intimate Phone Call in Docuseries: ‘I Love You So Much’

For fans who’ve ever wondered what Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce talk about, her Eras Tour docuseries delivered a behind-the-scenes peek at one of their private conversations.

The first episode of The End of an Era — which premiered on Disney+ on Friday, December 12 — showed the pop star, 35, and the NFL player, 36, chatting on the phone with each other. In their first conversation, filmed before Swift’s first Eras performance in London after her Vienna concerts were canceled because of a planned terror attack, Swift filled Kelce in on her preparations for Ed Sheeran’s imminent appearance during the surprise songs portion of the set.

“How are you guys so good?” Kelce asked. “You can just do a little, like, in-the-back-room rehearsal and then go do this in front of everyone.”

Swift appreciated the compliment, replying, “I love you. I don’t know, how do you remember 36,000 plays that are all tactical missions and then just go do it? It’s the same. It’s basically the same job! I got songs to remember, you got plays to remember.”

Kelce then quipped, “You got teammates, I got teammates,” before Swift added, “You’ve got Coach [Andy] Reid, I’ve got my mom,” as they both burst into laughter.

The duo then talked about how much Kelce wished he could be there for the show, with Swift jokingly lamenting, “Why do you have to be in the NFL?”

Kelce assured his then-girlfriend that he would be “scouring the internet” for videos of her performance, adding, “I love you so much, babe.”

After Swift noted she loves him “so much” too, Kelce replied, “Thanks for making my life better.”

Swift agreed with the sentiment, telling him, “I know, this was like, some people get a vitamin drip, I got this conversation.”

Later in the episode, Swift called Kelce shortly after the August 2024 concert to tell him that it went “so great” and she was “so happy” after feeling nervous.

“Oh, I can hear it in your voice so much,” Kelce replied.

“I’m so relieved,” Swift added. “Baby, it’s like the crowd knew that I needed a pick-me-up. When I walked out on stage, they were wilder than I’ve ever seen.”

Kelce agreed, saying, “They definitely did.”

The End of an Era offers an unprecedented glimpse of not only Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour but also her relationship with Kelce, which began in the summer of 2023. The first two episodes of the docuseries debuted on Friday, with two installments set to be released on both December 19 and December 26.

The Eras Tour holds special significance for the couple, who announced their engagement in August. Kelce famously tried to meet Swift at one of her Kansas City, Missouri, concerts in July 2023. After his plan to give her a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it failed, he spoke publicly about their missed connection on his “New Heights” podcast with brother Jason Kelce, which led Swift to reach out to Travis.

During Swift’s “New Heights” debut in August, Travis explained the role the tour played in jump-starting his romance with Swift.

“As much as you wanna give ‘New Heights’ credit, I give The Eras Tour credit,” he told Swift at the time. “Because if I would’ve never gone to that show and been mesmerized and just been captivated and then left with such a desire to want to meet you, I would’ve never went on here and told everybody how butthurt I was. I’d never just been so engulfed in the curiosity of who you were.”

Not only was Travis swept away by Swift’s onstage persona, but he was just as enchanted by her behind closed doors.

Every Time Travis Kelce Supported Taylor Swift at Her ‘Eras Tour’ Concerts

“You see you on the stage and you see how crazy you can get an entire stadium going, and then I get you in a room and it’s like I’ve known you forever,” he gushed. “It was just the easiest conversation I ever had, and it was just so much fun that it just knocked my socks off.”

He added: “She blew me away. I had never experienced something so mesmerizing on stage and then so real and so beautiful in person.”

Travis later joined Swift during her travels for her international tour dates, giving the pair an opportunity to spend time together when she wasn’t performing.

“When we first started dating, he was like, ‘I always wanted to go and really vacation in Europe and see Australia and go to Asia,’ and I was like, ‘Well, I’ve got a tour for that. It’s coming up,’” Swift recalled. “We got to travel the world and have vacations and adventures when I wasn’t on stage, which was really fun because Europe was so fun, Australia’s amazing. It was great.”

The first two episodes of The End of an Era are now streaming on Disney+.

Taylor Swift Cries in Doc Over ‘Horrible’ Terror Plot, Kids’ Dance Attack

Taylor Swift broke down in her Eras Tour docuseries while reflecting on a foiled terror attack at her concert and the “horrible” fatal stabbings of three of her young fans.

The pop star, 35, opened up about the devastating events during the first episode of The End of an Era, which premiered on Disney+ on Friday, December 12.

“It’s just kind of a weird feeling going into these last five shows in Europe,” she told the camera from her London hotel room. “We’ve done, like, 128 shows so far, but this is the first one where I feel like I’m skating on thin ice or something. We’ve had a series of very violent, scary things happen to the tour — like, we dodged a massacre situation, so I’ve just been kind of all over the place.”

Swift brought her record-breaking Eras Tour to venues around the world from March 2023 to December 2024. While performing throughout Europe in the summer of 2024, Swift endured back-to-back tragedies.

Taylor Swift’s ‘The End of an Era’: Date, Episodes, Songs, Trailer and More

First, a group of young fans attending a Swift-themed dance class in Southport, England, in July 2024 were attacked by 17-year-old Axel Rudakubana, who fatally stabbed three girls: Alice Da Silva Aguiar, 9, Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, and Bebe King, 6. Rudakubana also injured eight other girls ranging in age from 7 to 13, as well as the teacher of the class and a local businessman who intervened. In January, Rudakubana was sentenced to a minimum of 52 years in prison.

“It was little kids,” Swift noted in the docuseries before choking up. “I’m gonna, like, meet some of these families tonight and put on a pop concert, you know? It’s gonna be fine because I’m not gonna do this [cry]. I swear to God, I’m not gonna do this. I’m gonna be smiley. So any of this gets out of the way before you ever go on stage. You lock it off. [For] three and a half hours, they don’t have to worry about you.”

She continued, “You’re like a pilot flying the plane, and if you were like, ‘Oh, there’s turbulence up ahead. I don’t know if we’re actually gonna land in Dallas. I’m gonna try hard, but I don’t know if I can actually figure out how to land through this turbulence.’ Everyone on the plane is going to freak out. You just have to have a calm, cool, collected tone of like, ‘We will be landing in Dallas at 6:05 p.m. Got a little turbulence up ahead, but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before. Just keep your seatbelts fastened, and welcome to The Eras Tour!’”

After the attack, Swift shared her condolences in an emotional statement via her Instagram Story.

“The horror of yesterday’s attack in Southport is washing over me continuously, and I’m just completely in shock … The loss of life and innocence and the horrendous trauma inflicted on everyone who was there, the families and first responders,” she wrote at the time. “These were just little kids at a dance class. I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families.”

The following month, Swift was forced to cancel her three scheduled concerts in Vienna due to a terrorist threat. Two individuals were arrested at the time on suspicion of planning attacks inspired by the Islamic State group.

What to Know About the Planned Attack at Taylor Swift’s Vienna Concert

The End of an Era shows the Grammy winner talking to her longtime friend and collaborator Ed Sheeran backstage at Wembley Stadium in London in August 2024 after the plot.

“I was on the plane headed [to Vienna when we found out],” she told Sheeran. “I just need to do this show, remember the joy of it. … I get two months off after this, which I need. I need more than anything.”

Cameras later captured Swift bursting into tears again just before she returned to the stage in London.

“From a mental standpoint, I just do live in a reality that is very unreal a lot of the time, but it’s my job to kind of be able to handle all of these feelings and then perk up immediately to perform. That’s just the way it’s got to be,” she explained.

Later that month, after wrapping the European leg of her tour, Swift addressed the cancellation of the Austrian concerts in a social media post.

“Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating,” she wrote via Instagram. “The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows. But I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives. I was heartened by the love and unity I saw in the fans who banded together.”

Swift then explained how she had moved forward with the tour after the foiled terror plot.

“I decided that all of my energy had to go toward helping to protect the nearly half a million people I had coming to see the shows in London,” she noted. “My team and I worked hand in hand with stadium staff and British authorities every day in pursuit of that goal, and I want to thank them for everything they did for us.”

All of the Biggest Moments From Taylor Swift’s Final ‘Eras Tour’ Shows

As for why she did not immediately make a public statement about the Vienna situation, Swift emphasized her focus on safety.

“Let me be very clear: I am not going to speak about something publicly if I think doing so might provoke those who would want to harm the fans who come to my shows,” she added. “In cases like this one, ‘silence’ is actually showing restraint and waiting to express yourself at a time when it’s right to. My priority was finishing our European tour safely, and it is with great relief that I can say we did that.”

The first two episodes of The End of an Era are now streaming on Disney+.

Congo’s opposition leader kidnapped in Brazzaville

Lassy Mbouity, leader of the opposition party Les Socialistes Congolais and a candidate in Congo’s March 2026 presidential election, was abducted last Sunday in Brazzaville by armed and masked men — just days after surviving an assassination attempt.

His party blame the government. “We are convinced it’s Brazzaville’s dictatorial regime behind this. It’s not the first time. He’s been arrested before, and the people who came to his home were masked, armed, and using a vehicle without a number plate. That’s why we believe it’s a kidnapping. We plan to continue mobilizing — not just among socialists but across the Congolese population and diaspora.” Martial Mbourangon Pa’nucci, party spokesperson for Les Socialistes Congolais, said.

A number of opposition parties joined the Les Socialistes Congolais to issue a joint statement on Thursday condemning the Kidnapping and demanding Mbouity’s unconditional release.

“This cowardly act is part of a worrying escalation of terror, intimidation, and systematic human rights violations in the Republic of Congo. It’s a serious breach of personal freedom and a direct violation of Article 9 of the October 25, 2015 Constitution. We demand Lassy Mbouity’s immediate release.” Clément Mierassa, head of the Congolese Social Democratic Party, said.

Congo’s Human Rights Organization has also joined the chorus of alarm, it has issued an urgent appeal for help from diplomats and international bodies.

The government has yet to respond the accusations of kidnapping.

Iran’s president says U.S. ‘looting’ planet, spreading insecurity

Iran’s president on Thursday reacted to comments by Donald Trump during his visit to the region, accusing him of plundering the planet.

He made the comments during a visit to the western city of Kermanshah.

On Tuesday Trump said Iranian leaders were “focused on stealing their people’s wealth to fund terror and bloodshed abroad”.

Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran was seeking peace and calm. His foreign minister has held 4 meetings with a Trump special envoy, seeking to reach a nuclear deal.

Trump on Wednesday said he wants “to make a deal,” but Tehran must end its support of proxy groups throughout the Mideast as part of any potential agreement.

The U.S. and Iran brokered a nuclear deal in 2015, during Democrat Barack Obama’s administration, in which Iran agreed to drastically reduce its stockpile of uranium and only enrich up to 3.67%. But that deal was scrapped during the first Trump administration.

Today, Iran enriches up to 60%, a short, technical step from weapons-grade levels, and has enough stockpiled for multiple nuclear bombs should it choose to build them.
