TotalEnergies withdraws arbitration bid in Malawi fuel dispute

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-TotalEnergies Marketing Limited has withdrawn its quest for fresh arbitration in South Africa in the MK824 billion fuel supply dispute with the Malawi Government and Prima Fuels.

The development marks a significant turn of events in the long-running saga.

Lumbani Mbale, lawyer representing Malawi’s Attorney General in South Africa, confirmed this morning that he received correspondence from lawyers representing TotalEnergies in South Africa, Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr (CDH), that the matter has been withdrawn.

The news has been met with optimism by the Malawi Government.

“We addressed CDH on Friday that following the ruling of the High Court of Malawi on Thursday, January 29 2026, the matter must be discontinued by Friday, January 30 2026.

They wrote us back on Saturday.

We have received correspondence that the matter has been withdrawn,” Mbale said.

This correspondence signals a major shift in the case.

Mbale said this means the parties are good to go with the trial.
