DAR ES SALAAM-(MaraviPost)-Madagascar etched their name into African football history on Tuesday after battling to a dramatic 1-0 victory over Sudan at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, sealing their place in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) final for the very first time.
The Barea showed remarkable resilience and discipline after being reduced to 10 men midway through the second half, holding off relentless Sudanese pressure to protect their slender lead.
The decisive moment came in the 37th minute when forward Andry Rakotondrazaka pounced on a defensive error to slot the ball past Sudanese goalkeeper Mohamed Osman.
The goal sent the Malagasy fans into wild celebrations, with their side now just one step away from continental glory.
Sudan pushed hard for an equalizer in the second half, dominating possession and creating several dangerous chances.
Their efforts intensified when Madagascar’s captain, Toavina Ralamboson, was shown a red card for a second bookable offense in the 62nd minute, leaving the islanders with 10 men for nearly half an hour.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Madagascar’s defense, marshaled by goalkeeper Nina Rakotonirina, stood firm with heroic saves and last ditch tackles.
Substitute striker Saifeldin Bakhit came close to equalizing for Sudan in stoppage time, but his header went inches wide.
Madagascar will now face the winner of the other semifinal between Senegal and Morocco in the CHAN final.
Regardless of the outcome, the Barea have already won the admiration of the continent with their fearless run.
The CHAN final will be played on Saturday at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium.
