Malawians who were recently repatriated from the Republic of South Africa and were being quarantined at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre have escaped from the centre due to poor social conditions.

According to an impeccable source at the centre, by Wednesday morning, there were none of the returnees but only security agents like the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers and police officers.

The source has further said there is no water, no toilets and safe resting rooms at the centre. At the meantime, there are only signs, such as leftovers and packs of food, that there were people but none of Covid- 19 suspects are there.

On Tuesday, 17 of the returnees tested positive for Covid- 19 and were transferred to Kameza Testing Centre in Blantyre for further medical attention.

Efforts to speak to the Department of Disaster Management (Dodma) officials bore no fruits as their phones were out of reach.

For the past two weeks government has been repatriating about 360 Malawians who have been facing various hardships in the rainbow nation due to Covi-19 pandemic.

Over 100 Malawians tested positive for the disease and four people have died of the same.
