Indian hemp seller fined K60, 000 in Dowa

A 25-year old man, Evance Wilson on Wednesday was sentenced to pay a fine of K60,000.00 or serve a 12-month imprison with hard Labour (IHL). The sentence was meted to Wilson by the Dowa magistrate court, for being found in possession of Indian hemp, locally known as Chamba.Police Prosecutor Sergeant Gerard Kwizombe, told the court that Wilson was  on 27 March, 2017 at Dowa turn off arrested for possession of the forbidden drug. He had boarded a minibus with 3 traveling bags.

“Your Worship, the police managed to find Indian hemp in the said travelling bags, and then arrested the suspects in the process,” said Kwizombe.

Kwizombe further told the court that the Indian hemp was taken to Chitedze Research Station for examination, where it was proved to be Indian hemp and weighing 27.8 kgs.

While admitting to the offense, Wilson during litigation, asked the court to be lenient when passing judgement and said he has a big responsibility of taking care of some orphans and his children.

However, the police prosecutor argued that the convict deserved a stiff sentence.

Second grade magistrate Ezekielo Kantikana then sentenced Wilson to pay a fine of K60,000.00, or to serve a jail term of 12 months IHL.

Evance Wilson who managed to pay the fine on the same day, hails from Kasankha village in the area of Traditional Autholity Kaomba in Kasungu District.
