KASUNGU-(MaraviPost)-UTM president Dalitso Kabambe has called on religious leaders to play an active role in promoting unity among Malawians and assessing whether the country is making progress in all aspects of development.

Kabambe made the remarks on Sunday at Kamuzu Academy (KA) in Kasungu during the 40th General Assembly of the CCAP Livingstonia Synod.

Kabambe said it is regrettable that disunity and a lack of love among Malawians continue to exist despite the presence of churches with the capacity to encourage people to uphold good values and work together.

He specifically called on the CCAP Livingstonia Synod to take a leading role in bringing Malawians together so that the country can achieve meaningful development.

The UTM leader said the Church has a vital role to play in promoting unity, peace and moral leadership, while political leaders should recognise that places of worship and national occasions belong to all Malawians and should not be used for partisan divisions.

“Malawi needs a process of national detoxification, where prayer belongs to God, politics belongs to the democratic process, and national events belong to every Malawian,” said Kabambe.

CCAP Livingstonia Synod General Secretary William Tembo said cooperation among political leaders helps the country serve its citizens better and address challenges affecting their daily lives.

He said bringing together Christians and politicians from different backgrounds also contribute to strengthening national unity.

The 40th General Assembly brought together members of the Synod to elect leaders who will serve the Church for the next four years.

The gathering attracted several prominent political figures, including former president Lazarus Chakwera, former vice-president Khumbo Kachali and Second Vice-President Enock Chihana, among others.
