#Malawi’s Cyclone Freddy impact: Parliament’s adjournment extended to March 22

LILONGWE (MaraviPost)-Due to Tropical Cyclone Freddy impact, office of the speaker has extended Malawi Parliament budget session’s adjournment to March 22, 2022.

In a statement signed by Speaker of Parliament, Catherine Gotani Hara states that, the change has come up in order to enable the legislators ,cabinet ministers, departments and agencies to attend to critical matters such as effective delivery of humanitarian assistance in affected areas before resuming the sitting of the house.

Hara therefore extended condolences to bereaved families who have lost their beloved one in hardly affected districts in the country.

She added,Parliament would like to wish for a speedy recovery of all the people that have been injured during the tragedy as well as recovering from trauma caused by this calamity.

Hara also lauded organizations, individuals and other stakeholders who have so far provided humanitarian support to those affected and appealed for more support to ensure that all the affected people are adequately assisted.

According to Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) As of Sunday, March 19, 2023, the number of the displaced people is now at 490,098 with 533 camps set to accommodate the displaced.

The death toll has risen from 447 to 476; with 918 injuries. The number of reported missing persons
is at 349 from 282 .
