Gutted laptop injures passengers in American flight

DALLAS-(MaraviPost)-A passenger’s laptop caught fire aboard an American Airlines flight from Atlanta to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, prompting a rapid response from the cabin crew and leaving passengers with burn injuries shortly before landing.

According to PEOPLE, which reported the incident on Saturday, August 22, 2026, American Airlines Flight 2398 landed safely at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport after smoke was detected from a passenger’s device during landing.

The airline said one passenger received medical attention at the airport and was later released, while air-traffic-control audio obtained by CBS Texas indicated that four to five passengers may have suffered burns from the laptop.

The aircraft, an Airbus A321, had departed Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia with approximately 133 people on board.

The emergency occurred as the aircraft was approaching Dallas, creating a potentially dangerous situation inside the cabin during one of the most critical phases of the flight.

The pilot alerted air traffic controllers that there was a fire in the rear section of the aircraft and that flight attendants were attempting to extinguish it.

The pilot also reported that several passengers appeared to have been burned and that the laptop had been contained in the middle section of the aircraft.

Flight attendants acted quickly to isolate the device and prevent the fire from spreading.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the crew contained the laptop battery fire using a thermal containment bag, an important measure because lithium-ion battery fires can be difficult to control and may reignite after appearing to have been extinguished.

Despite the emergency, the aircraft continued its approach and landed safely at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport at about 6:55 p.m. local time.

Emergency personnel were waiting at the gate when the aircraft arrived, allowing the injured passenger to receive immediate medical attention.

American Airlines praised its cabin crew for responding swiftly to the incident and successfully containing the device.

The airline said the aircraft reached the gate under its own power and that emergency personnel met the flight upon arrival.

The incident has renewed attention on the safety risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, which are widely used in laptops, mobile phones, tablets, power banks and other portable electronic devices. Such batteries can overheat and enter a process known as thermal runaway, potentially producing intense heat, smoke and fire.

The FAA has warned that thermal runaway can occur without warning when batteries are damaged, overheated, overcharged, exposed to water or improperly packed. Manufacturing defects can also cause batteries to fail unexpectedly.

The agency has recorded dozens of lithium-battery-related incidents involving smoke or fire aboard passenger aircraft in 2026, highlighting the continuing challenge airlines face as passengers increasingly travel with multiple electronic devices.

For passengers, the incident is a reminder that damaged or malfunctioning electronic devices should not be used or carried onto an aircraft without following airline and aviation safety requirements.

Warning signs such as unusual heat, swelling, smoke or a strange smell can indicate a potentially dangerous battery problem.

The precise cause of the laptop fire has not yet been established.

Aviation authorities are expected to examine the device and circumstances surrounding the incident as part of efforts to determine what caused the battery to ignite.

Although the fire caused panic and injuries, the quick intervention by the flight crew prevented the incident from becoming a more serious aviation emergency.

The safe landing and immediate medical response also demonstrated the importance of cabin crews being prepared to deal with fires involving lithium-ion batteries.

The incident serves as another warning that devices passengers routinely regard as harmless can become significant safety hazards when their batteries malfunction, particularly inside the confined environment of an aircraft cabin.
