BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s Ireen Navicha has missed out on another opportunity to secure an automatic place in the Top 40 at the Miss World 2026 competition in Vietnam.
Navicha failed to win the African round of the Head-to-Head Challenge, with South Africa’s Romanda Hombir emerging as the winner and securing a place in the Top 40.
The result means Navicha will now have to rely on other routes to make the cut as the competition enters the next stages.
The Head-to-Head Challenge gives contestants an opportunity to present their views, personal convictions and Beauty With a Purpose projects before judges.
Miss World says challenge winners can earn places in the Top 40.
Navicha used her appearance in the challenge to highlight the plight of girls in Malawi who drop out of school because of teenage pregnancy and early marriage.
She told the judges about her “When a Mother Is a Child” project under the GreyNavies Foundation, which seeks to help teenage mothers return to school.
The initiative has supported girls through scholarships and a hostel, while a nursery has also been established to look after the children of young mothers as they attend classes.
Despite her advocacy message, Navicha did not make the final cut in the African Head-to-Head round.
Hombir, 27, will instead carry South Africa into the Top 40 after winning the African challenge.
She was crowned Miss World South Africa in July and is a clinical audiologist, motivational speaker and model from Mpumalanga.
Navicha remains in contention for a Top 40 place through the other competitions and selection routes.
The new Miss World format divides the Top 40 into four continental regions, with 10 contestants coming from each region.
Places can be secured through challenges including Beauty With a Purpose, Multimedia, Head-to-Head, Top Model and People’s Choice.
Navicha is one of the African contestants competing at this year’s pageant, with her advocacy centred on keeping girls in school and supporting teenage mothers.
Miss World has also featured her Beauty With a Purpose project, describing it as an initiative helping girls return to school through education and motivation.
The 73rd Miss World Festival is being held in Vietnam, with the grand finale scheduled for September 5.
