Malawi Government fails to repatriate diplomats

Lilongwe, (MaraviPost): Diplomats recalled from Malawi diplomatic missions are stuck as Government has no money to repatriate them.

A list of the first batch of 20 compiled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, indicate diplomats in all Missions and end of their tour date.

A diplomat at one of the stations has told Maravi Post that the failure to facilitate diplomats return affects their lives, like school children, payment of contracts and sometimes cancellation of contracts.

“The impression is given that diplomats refuse to go home, if that is the case Government will stop. Paying rentals and allowances, but they can’t stop because it is the Ministry failing to pay for flights and shipment of personal items back home,” said a diplomat.

Another diplomat indicated that over 80 diplomats received letters from Secretary for Foreign Affairs Ben Botolo in April 2019 informing them that their tour of duty had ended but they were to remain in their posts until further instructions.

Borolo’s predecessor Isaac Mbuya Munlo told Parliamentary committee that the Ministry would require MWK6 billion to repatriate all diplomats whose contracts expired but they were failing as the owed shippers and airlines money for earlier repatriation.
