BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-UTM president Saulos Klaus Chilima on Sunday said that the UTM-MCP alliance is the only viable approach to the 50 percent plus one electoral reform.

Chilima said this when he addressed a huge crowd gathered at Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre, days after his party announced that it would be going into an electoral alliance with the MCP.

The UTM leader said it is not difficult for his party to go solo to the fresh presidential elections, but chances are that no candidate will scoop the prescribed majority.

“If all the three parties go separately to these elections, no one will get the 50+1 votes. This will call for another election in which number one and number will have to battle it out in what are called run-off elections. What is the wisdom of going solo and then have a run-off election when we can have a killer punch outright?” Chilima said.

He further urged the multitude at Njamba to register, vote and the take time to guard their cast vote jealously.

The state vice president asked UTM followers to trust his judgement in going into an alliance with MCP and other partners because it is for the good of the party and the nation.

“Let me assure you that I am a think things through. I think sharply.” Chilima said, glittering with his usual confidence.

He added that he thought sharply.before leaving the DPP, he thought sharply before coming up with the UTM party, and now he has thought sharply about going into an alliance with MCP and other parties.

Chilima stressed that UTM has come to stay, dismissing fears that the party will be swallowed up in this alliance.

“UTM has not been sold. It is not for sale. It will never be sold. UTM will be there until eternity.” He said amid cheers from the fully packed Njamba Park.

The rally was attended by, among others, the Vice President of UTM, Dr Usi, the party’s Secretary General, Kaliati, the party’s patron Masangwi, the Mafunde President, Dr George Mnensa, UP president, Dr John Chisi and the former Minister of Labour, Hon. Yunus Mussa.
