17 people killed after a two-storey restaurant collapse in China

BEIJING-(MaraviPost)-At least 17 people have died on Saturday in the city of Linfen, north China’s Shanxi Province after a two-storey restaurant collapsed.

China’s State broadcaster CCTV disclosed the news in a social media post.

Reports revealed that the accident happened at around 9:40 a.m. in Xiangfen County and about 37 people were buried in the debris under the building when the accident happened.

Over 700 people were involved in rescue operation and at least 33 were pulled out, five among them confirmed dead at the scene and others sustained various degrees of injuries.

It is still unclear on what caused the accident but China is no stranger to building collapses and deadly construction accidents.

In recent years, the country’s rapid population growth which is estimated to 18.47% of the total world population has forced people to build structures without properly following the safety rules to cutter for the growing population.

In March this year, at least 10 people were killed after a Chinese hotel that was being used to isolate people who had arrived from other parts of China hit hard by the coronavirus outbreak collapsed.

Meanwhile, rescuers are still at the scene pulling out dozens of survivors from the rubble and searching for others believed to still be trapped under the building.
