MZUZU (Maravi Post)—Livingstonia Synod has come in the open to tell Malawi government that it does not recognize Eid-ul-Fitr public holiday, a position which is likely going to open a new debate on tolerance and co-existence among different religious groups in the country.“It is being announced on radio and newspapers that 7th July, 2016 is a public holiday—Eid. As Synod of Livingstonia we do not recognize it as a holiday,” wrote controversial Reverend Levi Nyondo in an email instructing all Synod employees to disregard the so called holiday and proceed to work on the material day.
The development has forced some quarters to express shock on the message Livingstonia Synod is communicating to the nation saying that it is progressive in as far as peaceful co-existence is concerned.
“This holiday is declared by government and not moslems. Why should we snub it when our Muslim friends observe our Christian holiday’s?”
“This is not healthy for the unity of this country,” said one social commentator who refused to be named.
Maravi Post has observed that some Malawi government institutions also share the view of Livingstonia Synod chief among them is the Malawi National Examination Board (MANEB) which has communicated in clear language that it does not recognize the so called Eid-ul-Fitr public holiday such that MSCE exams scheduled for this public holiday day will be administered without failure.

The heading is very misleading to readers. And he only was informing workers of his staff who I am assuming because of the nature of their work all attend the Livingstonia Synod. It is not like he told govt to disband the holiday for Muslims. Please be professional and reasonable when displaying headings. Many times it seems you are biased against those against the govt or critical of it. I as a reader would like to see a change regardless of whoever finances this website.
