A trailblazer remembered: Reflecting on the political career of Joyce Chitsulo

3 Min Read

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Joyce Chitsulo’s political journey was marked by determination, resilience, and a commitment to public service that earned her respect across the political divide.

She entered politics at a time when women in Malawi faced enormous challenges breaking through the male-dominated space of Parliament.

Her early political engagements were closely aligned with her deep concern for justice, gender equality, and human rights.

As a Member of Parliament for Mwanza West Constituency under the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), she quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the most vocal advocates for accountability and women’s empowerment.

Her leadership qualities were not only recognized by her own party, but also by Parliament at large.

In 2019, Joyce Chitsulo was appointed Chairperson of the Public Appointments Committee (PAC) of the National Assembly, a key oversight body responsible for vetting public appointments.

She became the first woman in Malawi’s history to chair the PAC, setting a precedent and inspiring more women to believe in their capacity to lead in governance structures.

Under her leadership, PAC handled some of the most sensitive and high-stakes vetting processes, including confirming or rejecting presidential appointments and questioning top government officials.

She was known for conducting committee proceedings with firmness, fairness, and professionalism—traits that earned her the nickname “Madam Iron Lady” among her peers.

Chitsulo was not afraid to take politically uncomfortable positions when institutional integrity was at stake.

Despite being a member of the opposition, she worked across party lines and promoted a cooperative spirit in Parliament, showing maturity and focus on national interest above partisan loyalty.

Beyond the chambers of Parliament, Joyce Chitsulo was active in grassroots mobilization and social development programs in Mwanza and across southern Malawi.

She was particularly focused on improving access to education for girls, expanding maternal health services, and curbing early marriages.

Chitsulo’s political ethos was deeply rooted in service delivery and empowerment rather than political theatrics.

Throughout her tenure, she demonstrated that principled leadership and gender inclusivity were not mutually exclusive in the pursuit of national development.

Her death came as a great shock to the nation and to all who had worked with her across the public and private sectors.

Parliament observed a moment of silence in her honour, and tributes poured in from both ruling and opposition benches, a rare gesture of unity that testified to her impact.

At the time of her passing, Joyce Chitsulo remained a symbol of what political leadership could be when anchored in ethical convictions and people-centered governance.

Her legacy continues to inspire many young women in Malawi who aspire to enter politics not as cheerleaders, but as decision-makers and agents of transformation.

Though she is gone, Joyce Chitsulo’s contribution to Malawi’s democratic journey remains indelible.

She will be remembered not only as a trailblazer, but as a woman who helped redefine the meaning of leadership in the corridors of power.
