BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—It is psychological and mental torture of the highest order for the children and relatives of former president Peter Mutharika’s head of security Norman Chisale, as both him and his wife, Evalista, are in police custody.
Chisale has spent a night in police custody following his arrest yesterday in relation to the importation of K5 billion worth of cement duty free using Mutharika’s Taxpayer Identification Number.
During his time as president, Mutharika was entitled to importing goods for personal use duty free, but eyebrows were raised when information emerged that 1.2 million 50-kilogramme bags of cement had been imported for such purposes.
Former Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) Deputy Commissioner-General Roza Mbilizi was the first to be arrested in relation to the cement deals which have also had businessperson Mahmed Chunara hooked into the transactions.
On the other hand, Chisale’s wife, Evalista, who was together with 12 police officers charged with murder on Buleya Lule’s death on Monday, has been transferred to Dedza Police from Maula Prison on security reasons.
Principal Magistrate Viva Nyimba denied the suspects bail arguing that the high court will decide of their fate once the case resumes.
The suspects were sent to Maula prison for remand.
This was despite the suspects’ lawyer Lawyer Enock Chibwana objected remanding his clients to Maula requesting the court that they remain in police cell.
