Malawi 2017 tobacco earnings soar by 23%; fetch US$212

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s final consolidated figures for this year’s tobacco earnings have been pegged at US$212 million, it has been learnt. This is the summing gross collection statistics released by regulatory body, Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) saying the earnings surpass last year’s by 23 percent.

In 2016, a total of 194 million kilograms of tobacco was sold at an average of US$1.42 per kg in which the country realized US275 million.

This was a drop from US$362 million of 168 million kg of tobacco sold in 2015 whilst this year 107 million kilograms went through the auction. This represents a 45 percent increase in terms of volumes sold. Continue reading Malawi 2017 tobacco earnings soar by 23%; fetch US$212

Chief Secretary to the Government Lloyd Muhara, this week described the Public Service Reforms Agenda as key to the Malawi’s transformation into economic soundness and independence.

Muhara made the assertion in Lilongwe on Monday when he presided over the opening of a five-day sectoral conference on the implementation of the Public Sector Reforms.

The conference, designed for Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), implementing the reforms, aims to share notes on experiences, progress and challenges since the launch of the Agenda in February 2015. LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-This is year’s Malawi tourism expo is estimated to cost about MK75 million to host according to event organizers.

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Henry Mussa told the news conference this week in the capital Lilongwe that the tourism expo will require much material and financial support to be successful.

Mussa disclosed that although there is need to source more funds, all is set for the event with the call that stakeholders in the industry must come forward with any support for the smooth running of the event. New York, 22 August, 2017 — The Government of Mozambique will host a Ministerial Meeting of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), Thursday 24 August to Friday 25 August 2017 in Maputo, Mozambique. Co-organized by the Government of Japan, the United Nations Office of the Special Advisor on Africa, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the African Union Commission and the World Bank, the 12th Ministerial Meeting under the TICAD process takes place a year after the landmark TICAD VI Summit in Nairobi, Kenya. The Nairobi Declaration and the Nairobi Implementation Plan adopted on 29 August 2016, outlined actions to be taken by Africa and its partners to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and African Union’s Agenda 2063. LILONGWE-(MaraviPost) – There is a huge demand for Malawi’s rare earth minerals in India, which the country cannot afford to miss out from amassing the much needed forex, it has been learnt.

The development comes barely a month after the country launched the much awaited Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI) report in July this year.

Malawi’s inflation down to 10.2% in July; food prices fall

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost) – The National Statistical Office (NSO) reports that Malawi’s inflation steeped downward by 1.1 percentage points from 11.3 percent in June to 10.3 percent in July.

An NSO statement released on Tuesday, states that this is the result of falling food prices in the market.

It further states that urban and rural rates stand at 9.3 percent and 11.0 percent respectively. On the overall, food inflation stands at 7.4 percent from 9.3 percent in June 2017, while non-food inflation stands at 12.7 percent from 13.2 percent in June 2017. Malawi’s integrated premier mobile network and ICT provider, Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) is pleased to announce that it has partnered with Azam TV to allow customers to pay monthly subscription through TNM’s mobile money platform Mpamba.

-said the agreement accords TNM Mpamba users the opportunity to pay their AZAM TV subscription any time, any day and anywhere.Jonazi said

“this innovation presents convenience to our customers and knocks out any costs that may have been incurred when travelling long distances to pay for their bills.The Mpamba platform as a payment platform also grants the user of the service utmost safety as it is done electronically without having to carry any cash,” said Jonazi.

He said transacting through Mpamba offers users of the service the most secure, trusted and safest mode of payment.

The Senior Manager – Consumer Services added that Mpamba as a wallet offers the user the luxury of using the facility as and when that user feels appropriate.

To pay for AZAM subscriptions, any TNM Mpamba customer is simply required to dial *444# select 3 for payments, 2 for subscriptions and follow onscreen prompts.
