May the Real Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima please stand up against Tonse impunity!

By Fryson Chodzi

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The MK6.2billion fiasco has exposed the Tonse Government to an extent of being portrayed as clueless, corrupt and careless. Ironically Saulos Chilima is either not involved in the whole debacle or is rather complicit.

I have it from reliable sources that a silent pact was reached at State House to deliberately sideline the Veep in order to take off the steam and limelight from the energetic Vice President.

First, it seems that Rev. Chakwera has decided to throw to the bin the secretly guarded agreement and terms of the contract between himself and Chilima. In the coming weeks, I will be disclosing the contents of the agreement that was signed between Chilima and Chakwera and how the man of God turned politician and now president has gone against his own words.

However for today, the concern is rather why Chilima is not standing up to defend the people as he used to do during the reign of APM.

Let’s face facts, Chilima with APM had a good solid 2 or more years of working unimpeded and was allowed to shine. He was delegated and given all the necessary tools to work.

Today for the insecurities at State House, Chilima has only had a cordial relationship with Chakwera just for four months or less.

And in the midst of this here comes the K6.2billion scandal which needs the cooperation of the two. The real SKC would have handled this with stamina and patriotism not those weak and lazy directives tantalized in American English by both the speaker and the author of the speeches. Revelations coming daily and fast, clearly shows that there was a merry Christmas on the covid funds.

Rev. Chakwera has been caught off guard. On 17th January 2021 he made a flowery expenditure report on how the K6.2billion had been used. He presented this report with a sense of conviction and pride and even went further to state that his administration was doing better in management of Covid funds compared to the previous Government. Based on the success of how K6.2billion was used, he authorized the release of additional K17.52billion without delay to the same Clusters arguing they needed additional funding.

Chilima now has to stand up. Yes people voted for Tonse Alliance with leadership of Chakwera but truth be told, it was on the strength of UTM promises and charisma of Chilima that won the people’s votes. It was the salivating promises made by SKC that made people vote for Chakwera. Chilima talked of no nonsense approach to corruption and his promise to clean the prisons of petty criminals and fill them with corrupt politicians and civil servants, melted the hearts of many Malawians on the things to come.

Today’s failure to implement those promises is making Chilima to be a liar and a crook, how long will the Vice President allow his name and political career be soiled and destroyed by Chakwera? Chilima is known for his anti-corruption stance and his silence on the Covid gate is mind baffling and I am not surprised that people are sarcastically associating his silence to that of K6.2billion.

May the real Chilima please stand up now or be buried together with this fast becoming unlikable Government quickly digging its own grave faster than lightening due to corruption, ineptness, and cluelessness.

Chilima consoles  Ntcheu’Kampepuza fatal accident victims

Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima

NTCHEU-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima late Saturday afternoon drove all the way from Dowa to Ntcheu  to condole families who lost loved ones in a fatal accident at Kampepuza in the district on Friday morning.

Chilima who launched his UTM party manifesto and campaign in Dowa earlier in the day had to leave early for Ntcheu to condole the families.

The UTM leader started his speech at Dowa with a one minute of silence in memory of the accident victims and also the 56 people who died due to flash floods two weeks ago.

Chilima told the huge gathering at Dowa that he was not going to speak for a longer time as he had to drive the 260 kilometer journey to Ntcheu.

In Ntcheu he was joined by his runningmate in the May elections Dr Michael Usi, UTM patron Noel Masangwi and UTM Secretary General Patricia Kaliati.

Chilima visited about four villages until dusk where he condoled them on their loss.

He said he was shocked with the deaths from the accident on Friday and prayed to God to receive the souls of those who died.

“It is disheartening to hear that one village has lost as much as 12 people at a go. This is a huge loss and we can only pray to God to comfort the bereaved families, ” said Chilima.

Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima in Rumphi flanked by Aford’s Chihana

RUMPHI-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima has said that he is very sad that his boss President Peter Mutharika is being fed lies by his ministers.

Speaking when he launched his party at Rumphi Boma on Saturday, the UTM leader said records show that the Njakwa-Livingstonia Road was started but that is not true.

“I have been to Rumphi before but my previous visits were to places along the main road. Today, I have been to the interior and it is sad to note that what we have been told is not true. There is no single centimetre that has been bitumenised,” he said.

Chilima said it is immoral to make fase claims in the media about development that is non-existent.

The Njakwa-Livingstonia Road passes through Rumphi North constituency whose member of Parliament is Transport and Public Works minister Jappie

Mhango.

During the imbizos in the constituency, DPP leaders were seen holding their own meetings along the route which Chilima’s convoy was taking.

They were distributing party paraphernalia and beef.

Commenting on the development, Chilima said people in Rumphi are looking for tangible development not meat or cash handouts

Of Chilima’s preying on Malawi Govt international invitation to excel political agenda: He is putting the nation into disarray

By Falles Kamanga

The continued questionable conduct of Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima of using government’s international invitation conference, meetings is a worrying matter.

Chilima who is the interim leader of United Transformation Movement (UTM) keeps on using such international conference invitation without seeking mandate from the head of state, President Peter Mutharika.

The VP continues to pass his boss attending such forums when all in all he told the nation that he was no longer part of the corrupt government.

Chilima is taking advantage of the the country’s porus laws on the presidency that does not allow to fire his deputy over misconduct or insurbodination.

The UTM leader he can not continue representing President Mutharika nor government when all in all he attacks the same entity on a daily basis.

Chilima cannot also use this platform to promote himself or his party while the current government funds his trip.

Last month he was in UK but just over the weekend he told the political rally that he had 20 days of rest-holiday when all in all he was representing the country aboard.

Just on this  week on Tuesday, Chilima left the country for Dubai, and to whose mandate is he on this trip?

This does not make sense for statesmanship which is lucking in Chilima.

Malawi Government cannot allow people at this level to be receiving individual invitations when where they are going , they can easily be misconstrued as representing the country.

After all, because Chilima still works and collects a salary as VP, the President must be the one clearing this kind of international engagement.

At the minimum, because he is still operating as VP for the country, he must have the courtesy of taking leaving and asking for permission from his only Boss.

This is just how government business must be conducted.

The meetings that Chilima is holding abroad are illegal and a sign of insubordination and undermines the democratically elected Government, especially coming from a Vice President of a country

Sensible citizens must rally behind Civil Society Organisation (CSOs) under the banner Joint Civil Society Platform on Governance (JCSPG) resignation calls.

The JCSPG last month demanded resignation of Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima on insubordination, double standards.

The grouping argued that Chilima could not keep on drawing benefits from the same government which he says is corrupt.

The platform alleges that the VP is giving the wrong impression of principles of good governance in the country.

The grouping has therefore vowed spearheading campaign of making sure that he quit from government.

JCSPG says Chilima must demonstrate statesmanship by not associating with the corrupt leadership.

The ten reason that he pave away for government business are valid.

Reasons why Chilima must resign?

  1. Drawing Salary and benefits from Government without doing any work – This is tantamount to theft
    2. By his own admission, he is not fighting corruption but supporting it – Chilima went on record on ZBS TV that the UTM is getting funding from the people within DPP whom he accuses to be corrupt.
    3. Abusing the courts to justify illegalities – Chilima uses over 50 police officers against 6 authorized by law but cannot accept to follow what is prescribed in the law but chooses to abuse the court through orders to maintain the illegal officers at his residences and offices.
    4. No respect for the laws of Malawi – By involving himself in electioneering with a group that is illegal in Malawi, Chilima has expressed disregard of the laws of Malawi
    5. Acting with Impunity – Chilima continues to hold meetings both local and abroad which undermines a democratically elected Government, which is tantamount to anarchy and lawlessness
    6. Lacks Integrity and moral justification – By continuing to be the country’s vice President against all the issues that Chilima talks bad about the same government, he is demonstrating highest level of lack of integrity and moral justification
    7. Brave Leaders with integrity do not hide behind the ambiguity of the law – Chilima continued use of the loopholes in the law that he cannot be fired and holding on to the office of the vice President continue to portray him as a greedy politician who wants to hoodwink the country to believe he is a different caliber of politician
    8. Abusing state resources for personal gains – since breaking ranks with the DPP and launching the UTM, Chilima has been crisscrossing the country on tax payers money for personal gain not in the interest of Malawians
    9. Chilima needs to be held accountable – the remarks that Chilima has made as regards to elections rigging and eavesdropping machine by the Government are very dangerous coming from the Vice President of the country. That Chilima doesn’t want to provide evidence on the same puts to question his character as a leader and hence the need for him to resign
    10. More tax payers money will be wasted – This country needs a functioning Vice President. With Chilima’s self-imposed absence from the Government, President Mutharika might be forced to appoint a second vice President.

This is a drain on the resources and tax payers as they have to pay for two vice presidents with one not functioning. If indeed Chilima stands on reforms was that people must be paid for their work and performance, he can do this country good by resigning and concentrate on his political ambitions.

To prove of his greedy, Chilima challenged the Nkhotakota rally that those demanding his resignation must have 1.9 million petitioners, really?

Its only people like Chilima who have no principles and moral justification that would cling on the same Government they accuse of being corrupt, draw salaries without work, and goes about town with people that are either corrupt or answering corrupt cases in court, boost about receiving donations from people within the very same party that you accuse to be corrupt.

Maravi Post opinion poll favours VP Chilima as 2019 DPP Presidential candidate

According to an online survey done by Maravipost, Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima is the favored candidate for Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidency in the next year’s elections.

The opinion poll ran from May 15 to May 31, 2018 which aimed to establish who is popular and loved in the governing DPP.

The survey’s entry were collected from the main website, email, facebook among others.

70% of the participants stated that Chilima is the right candidate to represent DPP in next year’s tripartite elections.

while 21% were in favor of the incumbent President Peter Mutharika as being DPP torch bearer.

Just on the main website these were the results; Saulos Chilima (70%, 56 Votes), Peter Mutharika (21%, 17 Votes) and No Opinion (9%, 7 Votes)

Most argued that President Mutharika was more of an autopilot President rather than be action based. Most felt that the President was not looking at the best interest of the people but rather specific individual.

Many cited former Minister of Agriculture George Chaponda’s case as the deal breaker for them.

While on the other hand many are appreciated the reforms that Chilima has initiated in various Government departments he was attached to.

Many emphasised his success in setting appropriate examples such as participating in fund raising activities to raise fees for needy students.

One of renowned lawyers and activist that opted for anonymity applauded the young vice President for supporting youth initiatives.

He explained the importance of incorporating the youth in the progressive movements that help in the development of the country.

Malawi VP Chilima says leaving DPP soon over corruption escalation,,,Isn’t this too late?

NTCHISI-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima on Saturday surprised the nation when he disclosed that will leave the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) soon claiming that there is too much corruption.

This is the first time VP Chilima spoken out about rampant corruption in government saying it has reached what he has called “embarrassing levels”.

The VP was speaking today in Ntchisi where he presided over a Catholic Church event.

In his speech delivered in Chichewa, Chilima said Malawians should stop clapping hands but rather condemn thieves that are stealing government money and putting the lives of many Malawians at risk. He said it is this theft that has led to drug shortages in hospitals.

“Tiyeni tidzudzule mchitidwe wakuba. Tiyeni tisiye kuombela mmanja anthu akuba. Anthu akuba mubomamu akuyika miyoyo ya anthu ena pa chiopsezo. Zafika poyipa kwambiri ndipo pochititsa manyazi. Mankhwala muzipatala kubedwa. Kuba konzunza a Malawi. Izi ndizija mumazapeza kuti band yagawanapo zida chifukwa zanyanya,”says Chilima in vernacular Chichewa langauge.

But is this rebuke made in good time?

Some quarters of the society say, the VP remarks on corruption is long overdue considering the time has remained before the nation goes into election next year, May.

This comes also when there is heavy division in DPP with some members favoring Chilima while others for President Peter Mutharika as their presidential candidate.

Strangely, Chilima has not yet come openly of his interest to stand in 2019 as presidential candidate for DPP in 2019.

Malawi VP Chilima blasts engineer for poor work at MK290m Tengani dyke: ‘Waste of resources’

Malawi’s Vice-President Saulos Chilima on Tuesday blasted Shire River Basin Management Programme BRL Engineers for constructing a substandard MK290 million dyke which would not protect the people as intended.

Chilima, who visited the 823 metre dyke constructed along the Nkhande River in the area of Senior Chief Tengani in the district (Nsanje), expressed dissatisfaction with the way the dyke had been constructed, saying it would not protect the communities.

The aim of government putting up the dyke along Nkhande River was to protect people and their property in the event that the river floods.

Chilima was seen charged, demanding answers from the BRL officials on why they spent government money on something which was not sustainable.

In an interview, the Vice President said he was worried and not happy with the work as it did not reflect well on government’s efforts in developing the nation.

“I must say the truth that the dike is of substandard. I did not expect to see work like what I have seen today here. Even though I am not an engineer, I am justified to call the construction work substandard,” said Chilima.

The Vice President even told the BRL Engineers that the construction works should be reworked to reflect the real purpose of the dike, which is to protect the communities from the flooding water.
Chilima even regretted to have traveled a long distance to inspect something which was not worth the visit.

“I am really regretting that we have even spent resources to inspect something which will not protect our people. The project will not help our people.

“Therefore, we need to sit down and discuss so that the works should be reworked. This is a death trap to people because if the dike is washed away, then it will negatively affect on the communities,” said Chilima.

Nsanje Central Constituency Member of Parliament, who is also Minister of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, Francis Kasaila in whose constituency the dyke has been constructed, also expressed displeasure on the substandard works done.

Kasaila said the work is as good as having done nothing on the ground as it will not protect lives and property of the communities.

“We are not happy with the way the dike has been constructed. I and Senior Chief Tengani have been seeking audience with the BRL engineers but they have been shunning us. We wanted to give them advice which could have made the work to be perfected,” explained Kasaila.

One of the BRL leading engineers, Anati Jere, agreed to sentiments made by the Vice President over the substandard works on the Tengani dike.

Jere, however, said the amount of money spent resonated with the works which had been done on the dike.
“As the Vice President is putting it on the construction works, I agree with him. The work which has been done is worth the money spent or planned. However, as the Vice President has put it, we will have to sit down and see,” said Jere
