Mobile money could give Kenyan entrepreneurs a business boost

Much has been said and written about how person-to-person mobile money transactions are transforming Kenya’s economy, but the technology also has the potential to help entrepreneurs take their businesses to the next level.

That’s according to Dr. Rutendo Hwindingwi, divisional director for Sage East and West Africa, who says that the explosion in mobile money across Kenya is helping to drive entrepreneurship and efficiency for small businesses. The single biggest benefit of mobile money, he adds, is that it allows smaller businesses – even informal, microbusinesses without banking accounts – to take advantage of the benefits of digital payments. Malawians scared of fuel price hike

Malawians scared of fuel price hikeBLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has raised the prices of fuel on the Malawian market as globally prices of crude oil have gone up.

From yesterday, 10th June, 2016, Malawians have started digging deeper into their pockets just to access fuel.

According to Mera, Petrol has risen from K743.30 to K788.30 on retail; Diesel has gone up from K722.80 to K766.90 while Paraffin will be selling at K609.80.

On wholesale price, Petrol will now be sold at K722.450, Diesel at K701.05 while paraffin will be purchased at K543.95 per litre.

MERA said the combined effect of the movement of import prices and the kwacha exchange rate against the dollar had increased the cost of petrol and diesel.

Chief Executive Officer of MERA, Raphael Kamoto, said: “This follows assessment of the impact in the movement in the international oil prices exchange rate of the Kwacha to the US dollar and other Macro-economic fundamentals on the landed costs of the three products.”

Meanwhile, Malawians have expressed shock over the hike in fuel prices arguing that it will raise the cost of living.

“The problem now is that prices of different commodities are to go up and this will mean that we have to dig deep in our pockets. We should expect miserable life ahead” said Ndirande resident Enock Kamuyambeni.

Efforts to get views from the executive director of the Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA) John Kapito proved futile as he could not pick his phone when contacted.

The last time Mera hiked the fuel prices was in March this year.

Malawi lawmaker Deliwe Ngoma bemoans poor network services from Airtel and TNM

Malawi lawmaker Deliwe Ngoma bemoans poor network services from Airtel and TNM MZIMBA (MaraviPost)—The governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)’s Member of Parliament for Mzimba Luwerezi, Deliwe Ngoma has expressed sadness over poor telecommunication service delivery by two network providers, Airtel and Telecom Network of Malawi (TNM) saying the situation is denying people’s rights to communication in the area.

The complaint comes barely two weeks after the two leading telecommunication companies Airtel and TNM raised their calling and data usage packages to its customer despite their erratic network.

Ngoma was speaking in her constituency during the launch of the MK4million football trophy for the constituency over the weekend.
The lawmaker said that poor telecommunication network was derailing development in the area as people fail to communicate with the outside world on important issues.

“It’s very sad that when you are in this area, you are automatically disconnected to the outside world due to poor network problem which these two telecommunication company providers-Airtel and TNM as they are failing to do the needful job in this area.

“The area has a large population, but I don’t know why there are no towers for Airtel and TNM in order to boost network. People here want to be speaking with their friends and relatives who are either in Lilongwe or other areas but look you can’t access the network.

“I have been raising this challenge in Parliament for several times but the two aren’t coming forthwith. Honestly, I don’t know what else I should do so that these network providers hear the outcry of the
people. We are living in the generation of internet for easy communication but isn’t the same here. The development is still on despite the availability of electricity,” narrated Ngoma.

On the trophy, the law maker Ngoma stressed on the need for young people to be involved in activities which will prevent them from bad behavior saying that it was a responsibility of all MPs to provide such
services in their respective constituencies.

Apart from sponsoring the trophy, Ngoma also donated a minibus ambulance to the community to enhance mobility from the area to health facilities.
