MP Jumbe relocates from Salima Central constituency to Salima North of Yona

Member of Parliament (MP) for Salima Central, Felix Jumbe has confirmed that he has relocated and wants to contest the 2019 tripartite elections in Salima North Constituency.

Speaking in an interview, Jumbe, who until he was fired from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has been an MCP Parliamentarian, said that his sympathizers has influenced him to change constituencies.

“It is true that I have been asked to represent people of Salima north, but I have not yet responded to the call,” said Jumbe.

Jumbe explained that people of Salima North felt that he was ill-treated while in the MCP.

“My mother comes from Salima north and when I was ill-treated in the MCP, it did not please people from this area who looks at me as their son, so they have invited me to stand there and have promised to give me support even if I stand as independent or on any other parties’ tickets including Democratic Progressive Party,” said Jumbe.

‘Although Salima North is considered a strong hold of MCP, my sympathizers have promised to give me votes in whatever capacity if I stand in the election,” he said.

If he accepts the call he will face it off with his former colleague at MCP and the current and long serving member for Salima North, Kamphatengo Yona.

Meanwhile, some people have described the move as a ploy by Jumbe to give way to the current Minister of Justice, Samuel Tembenu SC, who is likely to contest the Salima Central parliamentary seat on DPP ticket for the second time.

Ironically, Jumbe floored Tembenu in the 2014 tripirtite elections with a small margin.

Juliana Lunguzi presented motion for Government to amend Higher Education Student Loan Act

Lilongwe, February 23, 2018: Dedza East Member of Parliament (MP), Juliana Lunguzi, on Thursday presented the motion asking the Parliamentary Committee on Education to examine the Higher Education Student Loan Act of 2015 and come up with recommendation to the house.

In her statement, Lunguzi said the Student Loans Board should examine the act and ensure that the board is adequately financed, thereby ensuring that all needy students in the tertiary institutions access loans to finance their education.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency (MANA), Chairperson for the Committee on Education, Dr Elias Chakwera said he was happy with the motion and the mandate given to them as a committee on education.

He further said when the Bill was passed in the house, they (MPs) did not foresee that it (the Bill) was excluding those who are pursuing in Diplomas, the higher education diplomas and degrees are offered at that level.

“Students that are going through diplomas cannot access the loans because the diploma was not mentioned in the Higher Education Loans law which we passed. By bringing it back, it means that the amendment has got to be made” said Chakwera.

He added that they also noticed that mature entry students do not have access to the loans,  perhaps when it comes back to us we are going to see what exactly is wrong and what should be done to improve loan access for all Malawian students.

Chakwera said as a committee, they are going to make sure that the loans board brings back the law to the parliament for their work as a committee is to push for this to be done. However, it is eventually the executive that is going to bring the law back to Parliament.

“We shall make sure that the loans board initiates changes that are relevant to the needs that we want the law to meet, therefore, the Minister of Education should be expected that at one time shall present the law.

Macra rebuffs MCP over MBC

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) has thrown away complaint by opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) against biased reporting and programming telling the party to go the broadcaster and not the Authority.

MCP wrote Macra on February 1, 2018 complaining against what it perceives as biased reporting and programming by MBC.

“Reference is made to your letter dated 1st February 2018 in which you have complained to the Authority about Malawi Broadcasting Corporation’s conduct. In the letter you have specifically mentioned programmes such as Sapita Kawiri, Chindunji, Manifesto Yanu and Ndikati Chete which you perceive to be biased against your political party,” reads the letter from Macra dated February 15, 2018 and signed by its director general Godfrey Itaye.

The letter adds: “As a matter of practice, complainants in regard to communication services are advised to lodge their complaints with the communication service provider first before referring the matter to the Authority. This allows for quick redress of the matter and prevents the Authority from being overburdened with matters that can easily be resolved at service provider level. We would therefore urge you to lodge your complaint with MBC as well on the matter.”

Macra further tells MCP that its complaint is “very general” and advises the party to state specific dates and times of the broadcasts that it is complaining about “so that we can focus on those broadcasts”.

The party is further challenged to state the actual content that is bone of contention.

“Further, state the actual content in the programmes that you believe is in conflict with MBC’s obligations under the Communications Act. This will assist us narrow down the issues and assist in quick resolution of the matter.”

Macra also schools MCP on its role.

“The Authority would like to advise that contrary to your assertions, the Authority monitors all broadcasters, including MBC in check. Apart from summoning private broadcasters, the Authority has on several occasions summoned MBC on its broadcasting conditions under the Communications Act and its license,” concludes the latter.

MCP was not available for comment.

The party also brought the same complaint in Parliament on Thursday but the matter attracted no debate from the House even from the party itself.

Lack of political will: politicians are the cause of Malawi being the poorest country on earth

By Saunders Jumah

Malawi, despite her despotic beginning at independence, had a visionary foundation. Despite having a founding president who had his vices, but a foundation stone for the future was laid.

The problem came in 1994, clearly the founders of democracy had no clue as to what government entails. Myopia of innovation.

In 1980 Malawi became the first nation in the SADC region, if not out of the continent, to have an Ethanol plant in Nkota-Kota district. There was a vision that in future, fossil fuels will not be sustainable, hence the need for green fuels to be planned.

Brazil in South America and one state of the United States of America embarked on green fuels using sugar cane as a raw materials for fuel. Malawi being an agriculture economy was chosen to have the next plant for the future.

Ethanol began to be extracted on Malawi soil. By 1986 all vehicles and automobiles started using fuel blend with 20% Ethanol and 80% gasoline.

On the paper that was signed at Sanjika Palace, by Malawi government and one Zimpet company of Brazil, there was need to send our youth to Brazil in future to learn on how to use pure Ethanol fuel by 1995.

Two engineers from Brazil were sent to Malawi to partner with Malawi engineers, to start the work of converting gasoline engines to use locally extracted Ethanol fuel.

The Utopian and one Engineer Geoffrey Mtaula, who is late, happened to drive on Malawi soil in a car that was converted in Malawi using pure Ethanol fuel.

The plan was to convert all vehicles that do not travel outside the country by using Ethanol to cut costs and grow the economy. Malawi was one of the nations with hopes for the future. If that plan had innovative minds, today Malawi could not be importing oil for domestic markets and its needs.

The first Earth Satellite Station for telephone and television, were commissioned in Malawi in the 1980s and SADC citizens have come to learn telecommunication capabilities from our land. Yet many of today’s Malawi citizens are ignorant of telecommunications technology.

There were many foundations that were laid out for the future but “Democracy and multiparty leaders” who came to take over from these foundations, lacked innovative mindsets.

For us to blame the foundational past we will be doing our nation wrong. Our foundation was right, we lack this same vision to enhance and move on with those foundation stones.

We had Malawi Development Corporation (MDC), that met such bigger and mega projects like Ethanol Factory and Earth Satellite Station, international financial institutions came to top up from what we had.

The very same Ethanol plant, if enhanced by now could be generating energy and add electricity to the national grid today if our leaders had the vision like that of the founding father (Dr. H. Kamuzu Banda).

The 1994 multiparty democracy did not have a huddle to switch on to digital television, because had the best foundation. What lacked was the visionary industrialization thinking skills because as Atelevisios were being switched on, Dwangwa Ethanol plant could also have started generating energry.

Even if we could not produce direct energy from the plant, but had the innovation continued, we could have had our own engineers to convert the acquired generators that have just been purchased or leased, converted and used with the fuel of Ethanol from sugar produced locally to cut costs.

There are a lot of projects that have been closed or liquidated because of lack of foresight by our politicians. MALDECO Fisheries could be producing tinned fish products by now, if foresighted leadership were there after 1994.

The key factor that could produce all these insights and foresights has just been degraded to zero; education has gone down in our nation. The next 30 years graduates that will be produced in Malawi, will be clueless of what innovation entails.

The professor who is ruling Malawi today goes around in podiums and insults the founding fathers of independent Malawi for lacking vision. The Utopian cries hearing this. Are we blaming Kamuzu Banda for not having enough electricity in Malawi in 2018? Are we insane?

Foundations were laid, you just have no guts and innovation to connect with what was laid to develop this nation to higher levels.

We have over 2 billion tonnage of coal at Kaziwiziwi, we have over 2.5 million tons of Strontianite, we have over 300 million tons of rare earth or Kaolinic clays, we have 45 million tons of Bauxite in Mulanje mountain, we have Hydro Carbons on Lake Malawi and onshore Lower Shire. We have kimberlite diamonds along the Kirk and Dzalanyama ranges, we have uranium in Usisya in Karonga, and we have lime and cement stones (unaccountable quantity) in Kasungu. Why blame the past as if all these mineral resources went with the past leaders?

Above all else, Malawi has the richest agriculture soil that produces maize and rice, sorghum, millet, ground nuts and beans. Why are we hungry?

A small nation of Malawi was created like the planet Earth itself. Over one sixth of our nation is covered with water, why should we blame God in heaven for our poverty and hunger?

Lack of innovation is the parasite that is eating the heads and brains of Malawi politicians.

The love of money, the love of luxury and serendipitous life, is what is killing our nation. No wonder 17 million citizens have over 54 political parties; for what?

In 24 years, three different political parties have ruled Malawi, all of them are embroiled with one disease “corruption and looting.” This is what politicians are fighting each other for, to get into the government and steal.

As 2019 approaches; citizens of Malawi must wake up to realize that we are not a poor nation, but our politicians are poor in their brains.

The citizens of Malawi must start listening carefully from politicians who come around our homesteads to lure and campaign for our votes. Not all have Malawi in their hearts; some if not many, want to come and steal so that the life they never lived before, can be changed after entering State House.

Competition for State House must not be the search for “luxury” but for innovation.

Bringing our nation up.

We have the foundation by nature and by hand; we do not need to be crying.

Some will come to tell you they need your votes because for four years they ran the country without donor support; who said a nation must run by foreign assistance?

Where is our sovereignty if we depend on a begging bowl? If we live by foreign assistance, are we a nation or an annex of the foreign nation?

This dictum must open the eyes of all citizens of Malawi, let us elect leaders of vision and innovation.

We need leaders with foresights and insights. Malawi is not a poor nation.he truth is that Malawi has poor-brained leaders.

It is therefore, an appeal to all citizens, let us in2019 vote for leaders who are rich in vision, and foresight not those who are hungry to steal your taxes.

You will know a person by his action and the gravity of his talk.

Armed robbers invade Brown Mpinganjira’s house

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Unidentified armed thugs on Wednesday raided the house of veteran politician Brown Mpinganjira at Chigumura in Blantyre.

The development comes barely weeks after dumping the opposition People’s Party (PP) and joining the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Mpinganjira confirmed of the development in an interview with the press. He said the development occurred around the morning hours.

According to Mpinganjira the robbers have gone away with almost all households items. He also said the armed thugs have also smashed family vehicles on their way out.

“I have referred the matter to the police,” said Mpinganjira.

However, the police are yet to comment on the matter.

Road to 2019 elections; Why are people joining, supporting and sympathising with MCP despite desperate MBC TV-radio propaganda?

We all know that there is massive propaganda against our party being championed by a few mercenary journalists at state controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC). By the way, I don’t have to mention the names of these few sold-out newsmen as we all know them.

In fact, I am reliably informed that there is stiff competition among these few mercenary journalists to out-class each other in attacking our party, the aim being to impress their political masters for favors. I have been briefed that it is survival of the fittest at MBC as you have to show excellence in attacking MCP to be included to the annual United Nations General Assembly trip in New York as a reward.

If you are a master of ceremonies during their so called development rally, you ensure that your voice runs hoarse with shouting ruling party slogans, that is if you are to be seen as a loyal bootlicker worthy taking a flight to New York! Very pathetic!

Nevertheless, we also know that there are many professional journalists at MBC who are refusing to be used and abused. We know you and we say thank you.

Now this brings us to our subject matter. Why are people still joining, supporting and sympathizing with our party? You see; people of high caliber such as Reverend Maurice Munthali are in the MCP tent. Former Presidential candidate Mama Loveness Gondwe recently joined our party.

Youthful and vibrant Francis Muluzi is in our camp. Kondi Msungama is, borrowing the youth language, also ‘in the building.’ Another intelligent young man, Francis David Chiwanga, is also ‘in the area.’ Experienced campaigners, Salim Bagus, is with us. Students in both public as well private universities are also supporting us, religious leaders, the list is endless.

My dear friends here on facebook page, the question remains: why such support and such sympathy despite such chastisement by MBC?

Well, let me attempt to unpack this for you.

My first observation is that the MBC propaganda is falling on deaf ears. This is because many people, myself inclusive, are convinced beyond reasonable doubt, that MCP, is now, a rebranded party. We know that the leader of the party, Reverend Dr Lazarus Chakwera, was not part and parcel of the old MCP people had issues with. Furthermore, there are new faces in MCP today. These are people who were not part and parcel of the old MCP. Over and above this, Reverend Dr Chakwera being a man of God, has repeatedly apologized to Malawians for whatever is associated with the old MCP.

The argument is simple: The fact that people had issues with the old MCP does not mean that the rebranded MCP under Dr Chakwera will repeat the same issues if given a chance to lead this country.

This is why I joined this party and this is why many are joining this party and this is why many are supporting and sympathizing with this party.

My second observation is that people in this country are convinced beyond any doubt that Reverend Dr Lazarus Chakwera is neither a tribalistic nor a regionalist leader. Dr Chakwera recognizes that we are all Malawians and that we must operate on that basis.

For instance, his dear wife, Monica Chakwera, is from the Northern region (Rumphi) and his children are married in almost all the regions of this country, in southern region, Thyolo district to be more specific.

Furthermore, Dr Chakwera’s running mate in the 2014 elections was from the Northern region and I am told that as the leader of the party, he nominated and canvassed support to have this Member of Parliament elected Speaker of the National Assembly.

People are aware that Reverend Dr Lazarus Chakwera is a national leader who is ready to work with every Malawian regardless of differences in terms of religion. A good example is myself: I am a Muslim but we are working harmoniously with Dr Chakwera. In as far as I am concerned, a leader must be uniting and all accommodating and this is what we are seeing in Dr Chakwera.

Finally, people are aware that those who were in the old MCP are in the ruling party today, disgracing themselves as evidenced by their public speeches. We know these mafias and we don’t need to mention their names.

My dear friends, Malawians have realized that Dr Lazarus Chakwera and the rebranded MCP deserve to be given a chance. This is why they are sympathizing with MCP. This is why they are joining MCP. This is why they are supporting MCP. This is why they voted for MCP in the 17th October 2017 by-elections and this is why they will do the same in 2019.

May God Bless Malawi

Peoples Party calls for politicians’ age limit; Older ages sleep during meetings

The opposition People’s Party (PP) says there should be age limit for political leaders since some politicians fail to deliver due to old age.

Speaking in an interview, PP General Secretary Ibrahim Matola said Malawi needs young people in political positions in the country hence politicians should be forced to retire at a certain age.

“How old is the minister of finance? These are people that just sleep in conferences instead of contributing.

“We need to have young people that can contribute meaningfully to the development of this country, the same happens with people working in others sectors when they reach a certain age they are forced to retire so why not politicians?” wondered Matola.

He added that age limit will also help the youth in the country to be taking leadership roles in various political parties in the country.

While conquering with Matola, Youths activist Steven Simsokwe said age the law enforcers to pass come up with such laws.

Malawi is yet to set an age limit for president, Members of Parliament (MPs) and cabinet ministers.

Pop Star Madonna says David Banda is Malawi’s future President

WASHINGTON-(MaraviPost)-The USA and International Pop star Madonna has called her son, David Banda, “the future president of Malawi” in a tweet praising the 12-year-old.

The sentiments come amid general outcry of the country’s lack of insightful leader who can serve the nation with zeal.

The US singer has has six children, four of whom she adopted from Malawi.

According to BBC, the singer has reportedly had a fractious relationship with Malawi’s authorities.

In 2013, Malawi accused Madonna of “bullying state officials”, exaggerating her contribution to the country and demanding VIP treatment.

Madonna’s manager accused Malawi’s government of having a “grudge” against the singer’s charity, Raising Malawi, which she founded the same year she adopted David.

Last year, Malawi granted Madonna permission to adopt two more children, and she became mother to twin baby girls Esther and Stella Mwale.
