Malawi has a multi-party system with over 40 registered political parties. The political process in Malawi is such that parties are voted into power. Parties participate in an electoral process. The parties with the most representation in the National Assembly are the People’s Party (PP), Malawi Congress Party (MCP), United Democratic Front (UDF), and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

President of Malawi

Under the country’s 1966, 1994 and 1995 constitutions, the President is executive head of state. The first President was elected by the National Assembly, but later presidents were elected in direct popular elections for a five-year term. In the event of a vacancy, the Vice-President becomes President.

Malawi Govt under DPP and President Mutharika must stop using MBC as a private company; “Sapita Kawiri program is stupid politics”

By Saunders Jumah the Utopian

“Politics of one party state and politics of multiparty democracy are two different systems”

At a referendum Malawians rejected the old system and chose multiparty which translated into changing of the laws and constitution. In those days there were “detention without trial”, in multiparty each and every suspect is innocent till proven guilty in the court of law and that the suspect must appear in the court within 48hours from the date of arrest. This is the life of politics now.

This dictum is prepared with anger because DPP and Peter Mutharika are using the souls and relatives who lost their loved ones as a mockery.

If “Sapita Kawiri program” is indeed going to be aired; DPP and Peter Mutharika must be the first to sack and arrest the known architectures of the brutality under Malawi Congress Party which are Dr. Hetherwick Ntaba and Mr. Nicholas Dausi; members of the ruling party.

Do not take citizens for granted. If anything the current Malawi Congress Party is led by new people without stains of blood in their hands because most of those who committed crimes against humanity are in the government holding senior positions. Mr. Dausi is information minister while Dr. Ntaba is the deputy president of DPP in the central region.

The Utopian is a man of integrity, he will never call Donkey a Horse because they all do the same job. He will never say White is Black. What is black is black and what is white is white.

DPP must stop this nonsense. After 1994 politics of the jungle was done with. We are in politics of “bread and butter” where the question is or must be what will you do if you get into the government, not who killed who and who took whose property.

This propaganda was supposed to be used by Bakili Muluzi and UDF in 1993 to 94 not 24 years later by DPP and Peter Mutharika.

This clearly shows that the government of Peter Mutharika has failed the nation. Their failure to acknowledge “messing up” the state are trying to sabotage democracy by using “one party politics tricks” which went with Kamuzu Banda.

The Mutharikas are not people to lead Malawi in this era of open and free society. They do not have intelligence and understanding of what democratic politics entail.

Case in point; what Peter Mutharika is doing is exactly what his brother did against Bakili Muluzi sometime in 2006 to 2008. Bingu Wa Mutharika had no voice, was not a convincing political novice than his predecessor Bakili Muluzi. Muluzi was gaining momentum whenever and wherever he presented his case to Malawians about his party being robbed of the presidency.

Instead of going back to the people to present his case Bingu Wa Mutharika introduced on the national radio what he called “Makiyolobasi” as a program with the intention of hurting the democratic president Muluzi. This is political rubbish.

Today we hear of MBC introducing “Sapita kawiri” what cheap and nonsensical propaganda?

Who does not know who the killers in Malawi are? DPP must be ashamed to stand into the open in trying to open the wounds of the past because as they try to locate the children of the late Gadamas, Matenjes, Sangalas and Chiwangas, MAENGA will also go and bring forward the parents and family of Robert Chasowa, Evison Matafale, Issa Njaunju, Bughidad, Stambuli and 20 you call thugs to see if they will be crying looking at Malawi Congress Party as killers of their relatives?

Ever since multiparty dispensation no party from UDF to DPP can stand up and ridicule another as a murderer because all of you are the same. PP is exceptional only if Paul Mpwiyo could die.

This dictum is coming with the intention to stop all political parties from capitalizing their political mileage on the pain of citizens. Muluzi failed to apprehend the killers in MCP, DPP failed to apprehend the killers in UDF today DPP cannot stand and act angelic when they are monkeys with the same butts.

In 2019 citizens are not going to vote out of history. Malawians will vote on current issues, who is promising them tangible development and projects that serve them in their areas, who is willing to live common and simple life like the rest of the citizens? Not who killed who in 1983.

If anything all with tears must blame and hold you leaders accountable. If you know the killers why don’t you bring them to justice? The police and all law enforcement agencies are under your arm why not do the needful? You cannot because you know you are no different from the rest. Therefore MAENGA urge you to stop using the names of the fallen heroes as your step towards political mileage.

Records show president Peter Mutharika being the most educated man having lived in a nation where politics is more mature and civilized why is he playing dirty politics in Malawi?

If your aim is to win second term do not go into archives to dig history. Just wake up and announce that as from today “Corruption and state thieving are closed whoever is found stealing or doing corruption will be arrested.

Ask all those that have externalized all stolen money to bring back and surrender to avoid prosecution else investigations are going to start with dire consequences, if you do this and walk your talk in 2019 you are likely to be given second term to rule this country.

Failure to do this know that 2019 you are getting out. Citizens are unpredictable with their mental thinking especially when they see rampant stealing and corrupt malpractice in the system.

You must stop taking the Utopian and MAENGA as people who hate you, we are not we just want you to heed to our call (stop state looting) is that much to ask?

Malawi of today is different you can use airwaves to discredit or decampaign others but the truth remains with the masses. After all voting is the secret of the heart.

Stop dreaming and start driving this nation to prosperity. Do not live a lie, follow the reality on the ground.

Botswana police releases impounded ‘Grace Mugabe’ super-cars

GABORONE-(MaraviPost)- Three luxury cars belonging to the Mugabe family were briefly detained in Botswana after the vehicles were involved in a crash as they were driven out of Zimbabwe, police said on Tuesday.

The Rolls Royce Ghost, a red Porsche and a Range Rover were damaged when the convoy – led by former first lady Grace Mugabe’s son – slowed down to avoid cattle crossing the road.

The vehicles were hit by a Toyota Corolla near the village of Artesia, 80km northeast of the capital Gaborone, in the nighttime accident on Friday, police said.

“We kept the vehicles for few hours at the police station and they were released to the owners on Saturday morning,” superintendent Wazha Zambezi told AFP.

“We always keep the vehicles involved in accidents and those three cars were not an exception.”

Grace Mugabe has not been seen in public since her husband Robert Mugabe was ousted from power in November after a military intervention that ended his 37-year reign.

The Chronicle, a state-owned newspaper in Zimbabwe, reported this week that Grace’s son Russell Goreraza had been stopped at the border for several hours as he drove into Botswana.

The cars were suspected of being used to smuggle cash and other valuables out of Zimbabwe after Mugabe’s fall.

They were released after several hours of searches and when Goreraza produced documents proving that Grace had granted him permission to drive her Rolls Royce to Botswana and South Africa.

The paper reported that Goreraza said he was driving to South Africa to have the cars serviced.

Goreraza is Grace’s son from her first marriage. She also has two sons and a daughter with Robert Mugabe, 93.

Grace, who is 41 younger than her husband, was widely criticised for her extravagance and lavish shopping sprees as the Zimbabwean economy collapsed under Mugabe’s authoritarian rule.

Israel confirms withdrawal from UN cultural body

Israel has formally notified the UN’s culture and education body of its withdrawal from the organisation, two months after it announced it would follow the US by walking out over resolutions critical of the Jewish state.

In a statement UNESCO chief Audrey Azoulay said she had been officially notified on Friday that Israel would leave on December 31, 2018.

“I regret this deeply, as it is my conviction that it is inside UNESCO and not outside it that states can best seek to overcome differences in the organization’s fields of competence,” she said.

The October 12 announcement by the United States that it was pulling out of the organisation underlined Washington’s drift away from multilateral institutions under nationalist President Donald Trump.

The US at the time accused UNESCO of having an “anti-Israel bias”, a sentiment echoed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who accused UNESCO of becoming “the theatre of the absurd”.

Their pullout followed two Arab-sponsored resolutions adopted by Paris-based UNESCO this year which were critical of Israel.

One referred to the Jewish state as “the occupying power” in the divided city of Jerusalem. Another declared the Old City of Hebron in the occupied West Bank a Palestinian World Heritage site.

Tensions had been bubbling since UNESCO controversially admitted Palestine as a member state in 2011 — a move opposed by the US and Israel, who argue that any recognition of Palestinian statehood must await a negotiated Middle East peace deal.

The US cut funding to UNESCO over the decision, depriving it of around a fifth of its budget.

The 195-member body is best known for producing a list of World Heritage sites that have become tourist favourites.

Israel, which has been a member since 1949, has nine sites on the list, including the ancient Masada fortress next to the Dead Sea.

UNESCO also runs science, educational and cultural programmes, including programmes to educate people about the Holocaust and promote intercultural dialogue.

ZCTU announces Morgan Tsvangirai as preferred presidential candidate for 2018 elections

By Muza Mpofu

HARARE-(MaraviPost)-Zimbabwe’s largest trade union federation is backing ailing MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai to be the opposition’s presidential candidate in the looming elections.

Tsvangirai, who is currently receiving chemotherapy treatment in South Africa, has been the face of opposition parties for almost two decades.

He is also the leader of the MDC Alliance, a coalition of seven political parties that have also endorsed his candidature in the pending elections.

Notwithstanding intense jockeying behind the scenes by his lieutenants to take over the reins — he still enjoys support from the ZCTU, a key ally of his MDC.

ZCTU secretary-general Japhet Moyo told the Daily News that while they are not interested in influencing leadership positions — they would gladly nominate Tsvangirai if they are given a chance.

“We don’t decide for any political party, workers in ZCTU belong to different political parties and they make their own decisions.

“We don’t make decisions for political parties, but if we are invited to make a decision, we will be glad to make a decision, we can contribute if we are invited.

“However, the question now is, do we have to talk about someone taking over when we don’t have a vacancy? This is not the time. We don’t believe that we should be debating that for now, there is no vacancy because he is still there and must continue,” Moyo said.

University of Zimbabwe political science lecturer Eldred Masunungure said Tsvangirai, and even those who religiously back him, must accept that he is now worn out and cannot withstand the rigours of election campaigning.

“In his condition, as portrayed in the media, I don’t think he can sustain a gruelling election campaign. I don’t think it is prudent to field him as a candidate, it is an act of cruelty to field him.

“The verdict should be that he retires and passes on the baton to someone who is elected through an electoral process, they should not appoint a successor, it’s an archaic route, but his constituency should lead the process,” Masunungure said.

Before plunging into politics, Tsvangirai was the secretary-general of ZCTU — and led workers during the 1997 mass protests. He survived an assassination attempt on his life when some unidentified men tried to throw him from his 10th floor offices during the same year.

Since the turn of the millennium, Tsvangirai was the symbol of resistance to Zanu PF’s rule. He had humble beginnings as a former mine worker and later trade unionist who joined hands with students, churches, and civic society to form the MDC in 1999.

In 2008, Tsvangirai won the popular vote, and after a six-week delay, the results were announced showing that he did not garner enough votes for an outright victory.

The ensuing presidential election run-off was, however, marred by several irregularities — including acts of intimidation and violence against his supporters. The former trade unionist was forced to withdraw, and the international community backed him, forcing Mugabe into a coalition government.

In the coalition government, Tsvangirai shared power with Mugabe as prime minister but his stint in government came to an end in 2013 when he was trounced by the latter in an election he again alleged was marred by several irregularities.

A charismatic public speaker, Tsvangirai is still the winning brand for the opposition, with political analysts unanimous that whoever succeeds him would face a mammoth task to fit his shoes.

Spokesperson of the MDC Alliance Welshman Ncube, who is also leader of the smaller MDC faction, has told the Dialy News that the seven parties in the coalition back Tsvangirai.

At its strategic retreat last weekend to prepare for the forthcoming elections, the MDC Alliance came up with Tsvangirai’s campaign itinerary.

Ncube indicated that the MDC Alliance is continuing with its meetings — with Tsvangirai represented by his deputy and founding MDC top member Nelson Chamisa, who is also heavily tipped to take over the party leadership in the post-Tsvangirai era.

Other contenders for the job are Thokozani Khupe, a trade unionist and the MDC’s vice president, and former Harare mayor Elias Mudzuri, who is currently the acting rotating president. Dark horses include the party’s secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora and deputy chairperson Morgen Komichi.

“We agreed that we should immediately start the campaigns with a rally in Harare’s Glen View suburb on Saturday and then Epworth on Sunday. This will be followed up by a star rally in Mutare while the organising team comes up with dates for other venues,” Ncube said.

Grace Mugabe ally arrested by six heavily armed police officers in evening raid

HARARE-(MaraviPost)-A suspected G40 faction Member of Parliament Masango Matambanadzo was on Monday arrested on charges yet to be explained

The Kwekwe Central MP was arrested over yet to be explained charges of possessing 30 tonnes of maize meal.

Police took the maize meal to Amaveni Police Station and were investigating the source and how he got the mealie-meal.

National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba quoted by the state media Monday confirmed police were investigating Matambanadzo.

She however did not give details on the matter asking to be telephoned later after-which she became unreachable.

The development led to speculation that the man is being hunted down by political enemies.

Sources quoted by the state media and said to be close to the investigations reportedly said about six armed police officers stormed Matambanadzo’s Amaveni house on Wednesday evening before they searched the house.

“They searched the house and found 30 tonnes of maize meal, which they then took to the police station together with him,” said the source.

The sources said other allegations against Matambanadzo bordered around some bloody clashes between illegal gold panners that used to rock Kwekwe City.

The sources said the legislator is accused of sponsoring the clashes.

“You know there used to be bloody clashes between illegal panners’ rival groups here and Matambanadzo is said to be one of the main sponsors of those terror groups.

“He also planted some thugs at Kwekwe Long Distance Bus Terminus who used to collect money from Kombi crews and police are also trying to prefer a charge around that,” said the source.

Matambanadzo’s personal assistant, Angela Nyathi, said allegations against the legislator were still not clear by yesterday evening.

“He is still with the police but allegations against his are still not clear, we tried to find out with the police but they said we will get the details on Tuesday when he appears in court,” she said.

George Weah sworn in as President of Liberia

By Bukola Adebayo, CNN

Lagos, Nigeria (CNN)Football star George Weah was sworn in as President of Liberia Monday, in the country’s first democratic transfer of power for more than 70 years.

Weah, a decorated football star, took over from Africa’s first female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Liberians of all ages formed long lines outside Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium, near the capital, Monrovia, to watch Weah’s inauguration.

“I have spent my life in stadiums but I’ve never felt like this,” Weah said in his inaugural address, AFP reported.
Weah, 51, won more than 60% of the votes and beat incumbent Vice-President, Joseph Boakai, in a runoff election on December 26.

Former Chelsea soccer star Didier Drogba also attended the ceremony.

Weah won the first round in October with 38.4% of the vote, while Boakai received 28.8%, the National Elections Commission said.

Because neither candidate garnered more than 50% of the vote, a runoff was initially scheduled for November 7.

But claims of fraud and “gross irregularities” filed by Boakai’s party and a smaller party delayed the vote. Those complaints were dismissed and a December runoff was set.

The West African nation of 4.6 million people has been ravaged by civil war, the Ebola virus and corruption and hasn’t had a democratic transfer of power since 1944.

After Sirleaf took office in January 2006 as Liberia’s first elected female President, she oversaw years of peace and stability despite festering problems and challenges.

Maenga deplores political parties in Malawi for hiring old recycled politicians based on names and fame

By Saunders Jumah the Utopian

Transformation is not just a word it goes hand in hand with new mindset, new attitude, new thinking and more particularly new people. Political landscape in Malawi did not completely change in 1994 because the torchbearers that led democratic dispensation were the very old people who once served and got schooled under one party state of the despot Kamuzu Banda.

24 years later Malawi has failed to see total reform because the torchbearers knew nothing of the new ideology but the old system they served.

The culture of dancing women, praising leaders when they are servants, glorifying the president, using state institutions’ vehicles to ferry people to political rallies, state companies giving money to ruling party, queuing on roads to escort or receive the president are some of the old beliefs that were supposed to be done with in multiparty dispensation.

Political parties are indebted when old recycled politicians move from one party to another. Old names are more important in the progress of political parties in Malawi.

Malawi is a nation where political names carry more water than ideological citizens. In 2018 it is an achievement for the ruling party to receive members of the old guards who served in various past governments and never made any difference; apart from being involved in corruption and state looting.

The likes of Brown Mpinganjira, Uladi Mussa, Sidik Mia, Henry Phoya, Ken Lipenga, Kenneth Msonda and many more are “spent force” or “expendables” who cannot bring no ideological change apart from corrupting and looting the nation state.

MAENGA appreciate the mammoth work these “spent force” undertook to liberate this country from one party state to multiparty democracy. But 24 years later they are not capable to change anything. They are spent force, their time is over.

In 24 years there is a new breed of citizens that are willing to transform this country from the reform they undertook. These are the young men and women who must be attracted and lured to join politics.

It is amazing that when the expendables are changing goals in their political life; parties are patting themselves on the shoulder for excellent work.

Sidik Mia has relayed in almost all political parties from UDF to MCP, Brown Mpinganjira has been a founding member of UDF and rolled to all parties to the extent of forming his own party known as NDA. Now he has just dumped PP to join the ruling DPP.

Politics is like soccer if you are a veteran you should take a coaching or technical bench to help the upcoming new talented players. Politics too has its time when you have to relinquish and take back bench.

MCP has become a force to reckon after all veterans took the back seat and allowed fresh and new blood take charge in the name of Lazarus Chakwera, Eisenhower Mkaka, Peter Chakwantha, Sosten Gwengwe, Jessie Kabwira and team.

The only mistake they made is to come back and hire the spent force Sidik Mia. Though Sidik Mia is regarded heavyweight in the south but his contribution is only money and if MCP come into power in 2019 corruption and nepotism will not stop because Sidik Mia will want to reclaim what he has lost in the run up to win elections.

If we are to do away with corruption and state looting we must refrain from hiring those with money to bail our parties out as they will do everything possible to get their money back. This is a lesson Malawi as a nation on a renaissance of democracy must learn.

UDF is believed to be a party that hatched corruption because most of the rich people that were used to make the party stand had to be paid back through unscrupulous deals.

Examples are obvious, Yanu Yanu bus company that was used to do secret meetings and money used of Mr. Makhumula Nkhoma had serious consequences when Mr. Makhumula acquired a six door limousine vehicle that entered in the country without paying custom duty.

Many examples are profound; the likes of Patrick Mbewe whose car was used to hatch UDF had to be paid and had absolute power over state resources.

By letting the spent force or expendables to keep changing political parties we must know Malawi is far from changing its trajectory over reform and transformation.

There can never be laws or rules to restrict the old guards and veterans from switching sides or changing political parties but there is a need for reform and transformation so that our country can move from corruption to development.

In this case we deplore the trend of receiving old guards into parties with vigour for there is nothing to be proud of.

MCP and DPP must rethink of the future of this nation otherwise they are no different from the past.

What Malawians are looking forward to is not old faces or names. We want progressive and transformational leaders who must shift from the old and introduce new ways of running our country.

As from now as we approach elections, we will appreciate seeing political party wooing and luring new faces particularly young blood joining main stream politics and holding high positions in their parties.

Malawi has plenty of food – President Mutharika

President Peter Mutharika on Sunday assured Malawians and the world that no one will die of hunger this year as the country has enough maize in stock.

Speaking during a developmental rally at Lunzu Primary Ground in Blantyre North East constituency, the President said unlike last year, many parts in the country have been heavily hit by drought and fall army worms this year, a situation that is raising fears of poor crop production.

President Mutharika, however, said Malawians should not panic as the country has enough grains in its reserves.

“This year, there are fears of low crop production because of drought and fall army worm attack in most parts of the country. But as government, we have about 234,000 metric tons of maize ready to support the affected families.

“As long as I am the President of this country, I will ensure that that no one dies of hunger,” Mutharika said.

The Malawi leader then took a swipe at opposition parties for accusing him of banning maize export and the sale of the same to Kenya saying his stance has now been vindicated.

“As a leader, you need to be careful when making decisions. When I refused to sell maize to Kenya, the opposition said all sorts of evil about me. But I remained quite because I knew what I was doing. This year, we experiencing droughts and attacks from army worms,” he said.

On development, Mutharika said he was determined to raise the country’s profile by implementing a number of developmental projects.

The president cited road infrastructure, education and health as some of his key focus areas.

“In 2014 I promised many things and I am only fulfilling what I promised. You have seen by yourself the roads that we are constructing in all regions, the community technical colleges and new airports under construction.

“In Blantyre, we expect to have a new stadium, dual- carriage road and a new district hospital,” he said.

Speaking earlier, Member of Parliament for Blantyre North East Constituency, Cecelia Chazama said crops in many fields of the district are drying up and even if the rains come, there is no hope for a bumper harvest.

However, Chazama – who is also Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security – commended the president for stocking grains which she said would be enough for families that would be affected.

Senior Chief Kapeni of Blantyre concurred with Chazama that many families in the district would face hunger.

Kapeni, therefore, appealed to government for a quick distribution of relief food.

Dr Cassim Chilumpha attacks DPP, MCP for regionalism

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The interim leader of newly-formed political party, Assembly for Democracy and Development (ADD), Dr Cassim Chilumpha, over the weekend accused ruling party, Democratic Progress Party (DPP) of poor governance, which he says fuels corruption, poverty, regionalism, and unemployment in Malawi.

Chilumpha attacked the incumbent leadership for its lenience in combating corruption, heeding the Baker Tilly famous cashgate report, continued racism and nepotism.

Chilumpha also asked Malawians not to vote even for main the opposition, Malawi congress Party (MCP) into democratic Malawi due to its common traits to DPP.

“I don’t see any difference between the incumbent DPP and MCP as both have regionalistic mindsets whereas MCP is party for Lilongwe, Dedza and Kasungu,” Chilumpha said.

Chilumpha also warned Malawians that the spirit of voting for people from diaspora, should stop; he cited that these derail citizens development expectations, and plans.

Meanwhile, ADD has drafted ten plans, which will be executed;, these are problems such as corruption, unemployment, poverty and regionalism will be over in the country.

Below are details of the ten points plan:

2. The elderly above 70 years, the disabled and the vulnerable to be on payroll

3. University education to be free

4. All corrupt suspects to be tried before competent courts and face justice without favour

5. Agriculture development policies to be reviewed and adopt diversified and sustainable mechanised, irrigated and value adding chain in all produce export commodities.

6. Urban structure plans and all development plans to be reviewed and get priority development vote

7. Informal sector to be structured and empowered

8. Government to open up new companies and create job opportunities

9. Decentralisation to be reviewed and accorded with more powers for districts self governing of development programs

10. Leading government positions to be allocated equally in all administrative regions and development to be implemented without political bias, regionalism or race.

Chilumpha launched the ADD party on January 8, 2018.
