Thousands of soldiers deployed throughout rural Zimbabwe

HARARE-(MaraviPost)-Zimbabwean opposition, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party led by Morgan Tsvangirai, has reportedly claimed that President Emmerson Mnangagwa has deployed thousands of soldiers throughout the country’s rural areas “in a sinister move to scare villagers into voting the ruling Zanu-PF”.

According to New Zimbabwe.com, the MDC said this as it demanded the demilitarisation of the villages.

“The MDC is… deeply concerned by the continued militarisation of villages around the country. We have solid and incontrovertible evidence pointing to the fact that thousands of army officers in civilian attire have been deployed into the countryside for the purposes of carrying out clandestine political campaigns on behalf of Zanu-PF,” read part of the statement.

Meanwhile, a Maravi Post report quoted former first lady Grace Mugabe’s ally – exiled former minister of higher education, Jonathan Moyo – as confirming the MDC’s allegation on Twitter.

Moyo, the report said, claimed that Zanu-PF had deployed over 2 000 soldiers across the country to lead its election campaign.

This came as Mnangagwa indicated during his visit to Maputo, Mozambique on Wednesday that Zimbabweans should brace for harmonised elections in the next five months.

A Herald newspaper report quoted Mnangagwa as saying: “Zimbabwe is going for elections in four to five months’ time and we have to preach peace, peace and peace because we know it is good for us and we have no doubt that we will have peaceful elections.

“I assure the regional leadership that the forthcoming harmonised polls will embrace the tenets of democracy, fair play and standards set by us in the Sadc.”

MEC kick starts electoral material development

As the 2019 tripartite elections draws closer, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has started the process of developing Media and Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials.

MEC Commissioner, Moffat Banda disclosed this Wednesday at Mulanje Boma Wednesday during a four day electoral material development workshop organized by the institution.

The process involves electoral stakeholders and the civil society who plays active roles in the electoral process.

“Electoral material development is an important aspect in preparation for elections. It ensures that quality messages disseminated to the masses to motivate them participate in elections,” he noted.

Banda added that, “We would want to have messages that will appeal to different kinds of people in a quest to make sure that people are well informed about the whole electoral process.”

The Commissioner pointed out that the activity would enable people to get electoral messages in good time for decision making.

One of the participants, Benson Nkhoma Somba hailed MEC for considering developing messages that would appeal to various groups of people involved in the electoral process adding this would reduce cases of voter apathy.

When Geopolitical Conditions And Moral Values Converge

By Alon Ben-Meir

The geopolitical developments in the Middle East over the past fifteen years have created new political and security dynamics engendered by the violent turmoil and profound concerns over the Iranian threat, shared by Israel and the Arab states. Israel is now facing a new critical juncture: continue with its oppressive occupation and creeping annexation of Palestinian land, which stands in total contrast to its moral responsibility and Jewish values; or seek a peace agreement with the Palestinians in the context of an Arab-Israeli comprehensive peace, which the Arab states seek now more than any time before because of their domestic and foreign security concerns.

The current government, led by Netanyahu with the support of three radical ministers, Lieberman, Bennett, and Shaked, who hold the key ministries of Defense, Education, and Justice respectively, relishe the new geopolitical environment. They complement each other by developing a defense posture, biased educational curriculum, and skewed public narrative while weakening the judiciary, with Netanyahu orchestrating the long-term strategy that denies the Palestinians a state of their own.

Blinded by the euphoria created by Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and the near-unimpeded expansion of settlements and annexation of Palestinian land, the ministers feel confident that the occupation is no longer a major concern to the Arab states. And with the unwavering backing of Trump, they are assuming a free hand to do what they choose with impunity.

They are tragically wrong.

Israel must now seize the momentous, time-sensitive opportunity provided by the changing geopolitical regional dynamic precipitated by the common Iranian threat against Israel and the Arab states. The leading Arab states, especially Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, and the Gulf states, view Israel today as a strategic ally rather than an enemy, which presents Israel with two options:

The first is to make further territorial gains by building new, expanding existing, and legalizing illegal settlements, which will basically foreclose any prospect of reaching an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement based on two states. This will not stop the Arab states from cooperating with Israel because of their preoccupation with domestic and foreign threats, which assumes priority over the Palestinians’ aspiration for statehood.

The relatively mute reaction to Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital only reinforces the view that the Arab states’ anxieties about the Iranian threat takes precedence, even over such a sensitive issue as the future status of Jerusalem.

That said, although the Arab states want to normalize relations with Israel, they will not do so because that would be seen as a blatant betrayal of the Palestinian cause, which they have championed for decades. Instead, they would (continue to) maintain tacit strategic cooperation with Israel against Iran, which they need, but deprive Israel of a comprehensive peace, which the Israelis greatly seek.

The second option for Israel is to capitalize on its current state of relations with the Arab countries by reaching out to the Palestinians to resume serious peace talks. This may well be a historic opportunity because the Arab states, who want to maintain their strategic cooperation with Israel, are now predisposed to pressure the Palestinians to make important concessions to Israel, especially on national security, refugees, and land swaps.

The current conditions provide a rare opportunity to reach a peace agreement that can be implemented over a long period of time (ten years or more), during which both sides can develop trust, (which is sorely lacking) through joint socio-economic projects while cementing security arrangements and cooperation.

By establishing a Palestinian state, Israel will end its human rights violations and stop the continuing moral erosion, precipitated by the occupation, which has infected the country for five decades and severely undermined Jewish values and humanitarianism. These values were the very secret behind Jewish survival throughout the millennia, even though they were subjected to discrimination, persecution, expulsion, and death.

As Rabbi Daniel Polish eloquently stated in his writing “Judaism and Human Rights,”, “The system of values and ideas [on which human rights are based] are among the beliefs which constitute the very core of Jewish sacred scripture and the tradition of ideas and practices which flows from it…”

At their core, Netanyahu and his company, are dedicated to the idea that God bequeathed the “land of Israel” exclusively to the Jews, which justifies taking any measure, however wrong and humanly abusive, to secure the land in perpetuity in the name of God. They have become oblivious to the fact that “human rights are an integral part of the faith and tradition of Judaism.”

The right-wing segment of the Israeli population, views the development of events between Israel and its Arab neighbors, and the US’ recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, as proof of the unassailability of the Netanyahu government’s judgment and policies. But there is nothing further from the truth.

If these policies could, in fact, lead to a comprehensive peace, I’d say, stay the course. But given the volatility of the Middle East, today’s friends may well become the foes of tomorrow. This is a prospect that the Netanyahu government cannot ignore.

At the present, the Saudis and other Gulf states need strategic cooperation with Israel, as it serves their interests as long as Iran is seen as a threat to their national security. This could change in many ways, including the mitigation of the Saudi-Iranian conflict, once Syria and Iraq stabilize, in which case strategic cooperation with Israel becomes irrelevant.

Without striking a peace agreement with the Palestinians and the rest of the Arab states, Israel will leave itself vulnerable to the changing geopolitical environment. Can Netanyahu, Lieberman, Bennett, and Shaked guarantee they can indefinitely frame the development of events in the region to Israel’s advantage?

There is no real adversary today that can potentially destroy Israel. Israel’s greatest enemy comes from within—its misguided leaders, whose blind messianic mission will be behind the destruction of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state.

UDF and Atupele Muluzi must come into the open if at democratic party has been swallowed by DPP and President Peter Mutharika

By Saunders Jumah the Utopian

MAENGA GROUP come to you leader of UDF Mr. Atupele Austin Muluzi and your entire executive committee with a question to find out what exactly is happening with your party?

You contested elections in 2014 as a presidential candidate of your party where you came out a distant 4th with a handful of members of parliament.

Immediately after electoral results were announced we got surprised that you went sole into the government of another party as a cabinet minister.

Your party UDF and those that support you were left mum without any explanation as to why you chose to dump your party and perched yourself in a different political party?

There is outcry in the party with some sober senior members branding your sole move as being politics of appeasement, they say you have abandoned “Agenda for Change of Ung’onoung’ono” because you are protecting your father and founder of UDF from prosecution.

Others are saying Peter Mutharika out of fear with what happened to his brother could not stomach the wrangle and enemity that stood between your father and his elder late brother Bingu Wa Mutharika.

Rumour is also leaking that Peter Mutharika intend to make you his running mate in 2019 hence your persistence abandoning your party for DPP.

All the above can be rhetorical and frenzy but whatever the truth is MAENGA would like to share with you some tentative points that may inject some sense in your political career.

You are a luckiest politician who is sympathized by every government that comes after Bingu Wa Mutharika. Under People’s Party Joyce Banda appointed you in her cabinet and Peter Mutharika has done likewise.

As an activist of “Agenda for Change” wouldn’t it be best for you to stand as your own man with your own ideology? DPP is a breakaway party that got abortion from your father’s party that you now lead.

If Peter Mutharika and DPP wanted to mend bridges with your father and give back what is of your father by picking you up, was is not better for Peter Mutharika to disband DPP and rejoin UDF as a token of bridging the enemity gap that his brother created against your father?

From the look of things and circumstances at hand it seems it is you and your father that went to Peter Mutharika to beg for his mercy so that the enemity between the Mutharikas and the Muluzi which victimized you to Maula prison be eased.

Many are saying you have sacrificed UDF to save your father from corruption case that late Bingu Wa Mutharika opened to torture and incarcerate your father Muluzi senior.

If all these are wrong, what type of alliance that involves only one person in the entire party? Your die-hard staunch member of parliament Lucius Banda is being victimized by Peter Mutharika and DPP while you watch. You have not at any time defended your legislator who is a bonafide member standing for the party up todate.

Your age and name has an advantage on the political arena of Malawi but whoever advised you to take this path wronged you because either way your political career may survive but your political party is doomed. Else your political career is ruined in exchange for the survival and existence of UDF.

We are advocating for a better Malawi and our duty is to go around helping groups and political parties realize their faultlines for mending and correction.

We have advised DPP and Peter Mutharika, we are just coming from MCP and its leader Lazarus Chakwera. We will not do our nation justice by sidelining you and the party that ushered multiparty democracy in our nation.

No citizen, be your supporter or mere citizen will or is understanding the jigsaw puzzle you are trying to solve here.

Political secrets are always unearthed out of events. Events surrounding your love with DPP and Peter Mutharika reveal you and undress everything you are trying to hide.

Do you think Eastern region will support you as an individual or support you as a leader of the yellow party when out of the entire National Executive Committee only you is appointed into the cabinet and no-one has been appointed to diplomatic mission or posted elsewhere within the arms of state?

You have betrayed the prospects of the future of your own party and your attitude has destroyed the good name UDF had in the minds of many.

Even if Peter Mutharika is to handover power into your hands whenever he deems necessary are you going to a DPP candidate or UDF?

You have disgraced all the youth that had a great hope in you for lacking direction of the political future of your career.

We know where you are, you are as confused as we are. This is the confusion that your supporters have too.

There is no sane politician that abandons his own entity and go to serve other people’s entity even if the presidency on the other side is cheap and easy to get.

Being a lawyer you must be far from understanding political philosophy of the present age.

Recently Malawi demanded the tabling of 50+1 electoral reform bill. Your substitute party DPP had no voice but to seek a hand of other political parties where they ended up dining with its greatest enemy “party” of Joyce Banda.

If this pressure persist in the run up to elections DPP and Peter Mutharika are ready to form further alliances where running mates or vice president will come from.

You will regret this in future. Politics of today is not politics of the past. You need to wake up. If you are eyeing the presidency of the Republic be your own man and revamp your father’s party or create your own.

The path you have taken with DPP and Peter Mutharika is suicidal. Just like you know in politics there are no permanent enemies but you must be assured in politics there are permanent fools who act like flies following the coffin to the grave.

Read between the lines comrade Atupele and understand the demographics of our politics otherwise you may be dumped unknowingly.

We do not want to hear your father coming from retirement giving notations of “Shubu chopopa ndekha chindichimwe kuphwetsa”?.

A week ago one of our member who happens to be your supporter penned you, in his petition similar questions are raised; this shows there is anger out there and many are wondering of your move from yellow to blue.

The gerontocrats can deceive you that they are teaching you leadership qualities but what school of leadership have you learnt apart from you being contaminated with corruption and state looting?

The poverty that is in this country taking in mind that all citizens know that we are suffering because the government we have now is of thieves, looters and corruption, what makes you think that when the chopping knife comes it will spare you?

Comrade Atupele Muluzi you owe this nation an explanation if your political career is to be preserved or kept intact, otherwise the chess game you are playing will end up with checkmate.

Malawians are not sleeping in 2018. We are not who we were in 1994, we have not been the same in 2004 and believe you me we are not going to be the same come 2019.

Time to rethink is now.

Zimbabwe University students demand vice chancellor Nyagura resignation over Grace Mugabe’s ‘fake’ degree

HARARE-(MaraviPosT)-Students have reportedly given the vice chancellor of the University of Zimbabwe (UZ), Levi Nyagura, 48 hours to step down from the institution over former first lady Grace Mugabe’s alleged “fake” degree.

In a letter delivered to UZ on Wednesday, the Zimbabwe National students’ Union (Zinasu), threatened “intensified protests” to force Nyagura to step down if their call was not heeded.

“It is our considered view that your continued stay at the helm of the institution further degrades its already tainted image in the academic field. This is because you presided over the awarding of a bogus doctorate to Grace Mugabe,” read part of the letter.

This came a few weeks after academics at the UZ petitioned the country’s anti-corruption commission to investigate the “suspicious” way in which Grace was awarded a PhD in orphanages four years ago.

The academics from the university’s sociology department said they were “shocked” when Grace emerged among the doctoral candidates in 2014.

“This was a shock to many members of the department as most members never (saw) or heard about the proposal, progress reports, thesis examiners and outcome of such a study by the candidate,” reads part of the petition, quoted by the private Zimbabwe Independent.

Grace was capped by her husband, then president Robert Mugabe , in August 2014 when he was still chancellor of the university.

She appeared in the red academic gown and black cap for the doctorate of philosophy degree beside the then vice president, Joice Mujuru, who also received a doctorate.

Mujuru’s doctoral thesis has subsequently been released into the public domain, but Grace’s thesis has never been made available.

At the time Grace was reported to have enrolled for the doctorate just three months before it was awarded .
Prominent graduates of the university, which has a distinguished track record, were outraged.

The late Zimbabwean author, Chenjerai Hove at the time wrote to the university’s vice chancellor, Levi Nyagura saying the university’s decision to give a doctorate to Grace had reduced its degrees to “a laughing stock”.

No evidence to ‘crucify, Joyce Banda on cashgate- ACB

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) director Reyneck Matemba said the graft-busting bureau is failing to find objective evidence linking former President Joyce Banda to Cashgate during her tenure.

Number of cash gate convicts including Oswald Lutepo, Leonard Kalonga and the late Treaser Senzani have been testifying against Joyce Banda.

This reporter understand that Joyce Banda ordered an independent audit of the corruption revelations, which was conducted by British firm RSM (formerly Baker Tilly). The findings were released in 2014.

Speaking to journalist in Blantyre on Thursday, Matemba disclosed that the British firm never linked Banda to any corruption.

According to him, all the bureau has were testimonies that were recorded from Cashgate convicts – Oswald Lutepo, Leonard Kalonga and the late Treaser Senzani.

Asked to explain what Police said that authorities had obtained an arrest warrant for Banda, the ACB Czar said Fiscal Department of Malawi Police have been doing their own investigation on financial crimes.

Last year James Kadadzera, a police public relations officer, said authorities had obtained an arrest warrant for Banda.

“The evidence gathered raises reasonable suspicion that the former president committed offences relating to abuse of office and money laundering,” he said in a statement.

But Banda has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

Through her spokesperson Andekuche Chanthunya, Banda said yesterday the issue has been repeatedly spoken about and that she has made it clear that she played no role; hence, cannot say much.

He said: “We have always maintained that Dr Joyce Banda knows nothing about Cashgate and she doesn’t really have anything to say about it.”

Banda, who was Malawi’s president for two years from 2012, said that prior to Cashgate, the MK577 billion theft happened between 2009 and 2012 when former president the late Bingu Wa Mutharika was in charge, alleging that there must be a stubborn link between the MK577 billion scam and Cashgate.

She left the country when she lost in an election to Peter Mutharika and has not returned since 2014.

Banda has been living in the United States, serving as a distinguished fellow at Woodrow Wilson Center and the Center for Global Development in Washington, DC.

Malawi Former President JB’s Youth Movement director Wyson Sumaili resigns

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s former head of state Joyce Banda’s Youth Movement for Development’s (YMD) country director Wyson Sumaili on Thursday resigned on personal grounds.

YMD is a youth grouping advancing Banda’s political and developmental agendas under People’s Party (PP).

In a resignation letter presented to JB and made available to the Maravi Post, Sumaili said the decision has been made on personal grounds.

The former YMD director said despite the resignation letter he remains royal to the former Malawi leader Banda.

Sumaili therefore lauded the achievements and experience gained under JB’s youth wing since 2010.

“I write to inform you of my resignation as Youth Movement For Development (YMD) country Director, due to personal reasons that are beyond my control. I hereby cannot continue with my duties for the post. I am very grateful for you for all the achievements and experience I acquired under your guidance and supervision.

“I am very thankful to you for your confidence in me and given me the best of opportunity to grow. The opportunity I received in this organization is immense, and I am really feeling bad to leave this organization. I regret this decision but my current situation forces me to take this decision. May God bless you all the time,” says Sumaili’s resignation letter.

Meanwhile, JB has acknowledged the recipient of Sumaili’s resignation letter.

Trump asked doctor for cognitive test

WASHINGTON — The Latest on President Donald Trump’s health (all times local):

President Donald Trump asked that a cognitive test be included as part of his first physical exam.

Trump’s physician — Navy doctor Ronny Jackson — says the president achieved a perfect score on the test, which was included in last Friday’s medical checkup.

Jackson says Trump’s 30 out of 30 score means there’s no indication that Trump has any cognitive issues.

The doctor speculates that Trump requested the exam in an attempt to beat back the narrative of the past few weeks that he is mentally unfit for office.

Jackson describes Trump as “very sharp” and “very articulate when he speaks to me.”

The doctor says he’s found “no reason whatsoever” to think the president has any issues with his thought process.

President Donald Trump performed “exceedingly well” on cognitive screening during his recent physical examination.

That’s according to his White House physician, navy doctor Ronny Jackson.

The doctor says he had “absolutely no concerns” about the 71-year-old president’s cognitive abilities, but performed the screening because Trump asked him to do it.

Jackson says Trump’s overall health “is excellent.” Jackson is providing a more detailed readout Tuesday following Trump’s first physical last Friday at the Walter Reed military hospital.

President Donald Trump’s doctor says he’s confident that Trump has a “very strong and a very probable possibility” of completing his presidency “with no medical issues.”

Navy doctor Ronny Jackson says his assessment is based on Trump’s cardiac assessment.

Trump had his first physical last Friday. Jackson says Trump’s heart exam was normal, with regular rhythm and no abnormal sounds.

Trump also has no heart disease and no family history of it.

Jackson says that based on the clinical information he has on Trump and his year of observing the president, “I feel very confident that he has a very strong and a very probable possibility of making it completely through his presidency with no medical issues.”

Trump took office at age 70, making him the oldest incoming U.S. president.

President Donald Trump’s overall health “is excellent” and he did “exceedingly well” on cognitive screening.

That’s according to his White House physician, Navy doctor Ronny Jackson.

Jackson is providing a more detailed readout Tuesday following Trump’s first physical last Friday at the Walter Reed military hospital.

Jackson reports that the 6-foot-3 president weighed in at 239 pounds — three pounds heavier than he was in September 2016.

Trump’s blood pressure was 122 over 74, and his total cholesterol was 223, which is higher than recommended.

Trump was 70 when he took office, making him the oldest person ever elected to the nation’s highest office.

Jackson says Trump is healthy and should remain so for the remainder of his presidency.

A fuller readout of President Donald Trump’s health following his first medical check-up is expected later Tuesday.

Trump’s White House physician – Navy doctor Ronny Jackson – declared Trump to be in “excellent health” following last Friday’s exam at the Walter Reed military hospital in Maryland.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Jackson will attend her briefing Tuesday to provide a more complete readout on Trump’s physical health.

Not expected are any conclusions about Trump’s mental acuity. Questions about Trump’s mental fitness have been raised following comments attributed to some of his close advisers in a new book, and his recent slurries.

North Korea imposes more demands on South Korea over Olympics

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is huddling Tuesday with nations that fought on America’s side in the Korean War, looking to increase economic pressure on North Korea over its nuclear weapons even as hopes rise for diplomacy. (Jan. 16)

A week after North Korea said it would send a delegation to next month’s Winter Olympics in South Korea, the regime’s demands have taken on a sinister pattern.

Reports emerged Tuesday that North Korea demanded the South return defectors who fled the totalitarian regime. That came after requiring that South Korea pay the North’s Olympic costs and an agreement by the United States and South Korea to suspend a planned joint military exercise.

The demands came to light since last week’s talks between North and South Korea — the first sit-down between the two countries in more than two years.

“This is why all those crotchety hawks evinced such skepticism at North Korea’s talks,” tweeted Robert Kelly, a professor of political science at Pusan National University in South Korea. “We all saw this coming.”

The South Korean newspaper The Chosun Ilbo reported Tuesday that the North demanded the return of 12 women who escaped in 2016 from their jobs at restaurant in Ningbo, China, a demand the paper said the South is legally bound to refuse.

South Korea’s government said the timing is too sensitive to comment, the newspaper said.

The North has warned that it will not agree to more reunions for families split by the Korean War unless the defectors, and another woman who fled from elsewhere, are returned.

The talks last week occurred after the U.S. agreed to South Korea’s request to postpone a large military exercise, which usually involves 30,000 American troops and 200,000 South Koreans, until after the Olympics are held Feb. 9-25. in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

On Friday,a North Korean state-run publication issued a demand for a “permanent halt” to U.S.-South Korean military drills while inter-Korean talks continue, according to The Strait Times of Singapore.

“Inter-Korean talks and war drill can never be compatible,” the North Korean publication, Uriminzokkiri, declared.

North Korea, which is under sanctions by the United Nations and U.S. aimed at ending its nuclear weapon and ballistic missile programs, also succeeded in getting South Korea to agree to fund its Olympic delegation, which will include as many as 500 athletes, performers, officials and reporters, according to The Hankyoreh, a South Korean online publication.

South Korea will pay the entire delegation’s expenses, said author and Korea analyst Gordon Chang.

“This is typical. (North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s) family playbook goes back several decades,” Chang said. “First they refuse to talk to South Korea. Then they make a bold overture. Next comes demands and then they throw a tantrum.”

If the Trump administration puts enough pressure on North Korea, the Kim family might agree it has no choice but to disarm, Chang said. But the White House has yet to impose sanctions where they would be most effective — on its top two trading partners, China and Russia, he added.

The North Korean demands were revealed as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson met Tuesday in Vancouver with foreign ministers from 20 nations that sided with the U.S. during the Korean War, which ended in 1953, to discuss how to pressure North Korea to quit its nuclear weapons and missile programs.

“We must increase the costs of the regime’s behavior to the point that North Korea must come to the table for credible negotiations,” Tillerson said in his opening comments.

Tillerson called for interdiction operations at sea.

Zim army ‘on high alert’ amid Grace Mugabe ally bloodshed threats – report

HARARE-(MaraviPost)-Zimbabwe’s home affairs minister Obert Mpofu has reportedly said that the military and security sector is on high alert amid fears that supporters of former first lady Grace Mugabe could regroup outside the country in efforts to destabilise Zimbabwe.

According to NewsDay , Mpofu said this after former minister of higher education Jonathan Moyo, who was also Grace’s ally, warned of bloodshed.

Mpofu said that some elements of the defeated Zanu-PF faction known as Generation 40 (G40) were plotting to counter the military intervention which saw ex-president Robert Mugabe lose power to his former deputy Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Moyo told Reuters last week that Zimbabwe would be plunged into a bloodshed if the international community failed to remove Mnangagwa’s government.

Moyo also described the Mnangagwa administration as “illegitimate”.

He, however, did not mention where the bloodbath threat was going to come from.

‘Wishful thinking’

“If you [UN and AU] don’t intervene when there has been such an outrageous, brazen attack on a constitutional order, you are simply opening the floodgates to conflict. If they don’t act, just as the sun will rise tomorrow, Zimbabwe will be another Somalia. There will be bloodshed,” Moyo was quoted as saying.

Responding to Moyo’s threats, Mpofu said: “If we could deal with a vicious enemy like the Rhodesian regime, what can stop us from dealing with the renegades who may want to destabilise our peace and stability? We are not a banana republic.

“We are a democratic country with a formidable security services sector and we cannot allow people to destabilise our peace. We may have our differences, but if people start contemplating causing chaos through destabilising our peace, then they will face the wrath of our security sector, but not only of our security sector, but of the patriotic Zimbabweans.”

A report by the privately-owned Standard newspaper said that Moyo’s utterances had been widely dismissed as “wishful thinking and dreams”.

“This matter has nothing to do with us. Ask him, he is the one alleging that,” The Zimbabwe Defence Forces spokesperson Colonel Overson Mugwisi was quoted as saying. “Is he being prophetic or it’s his prediction [about bloodshed]. Please ask him about his predictions and not me. I don’t see where we can fit here. People can dream. Ask him about his dreams.”

War veterans spokesperson Douglas Mahiya also dismissed the claims as wishful thinking.

Mahiya said unless the G40 group had stolen funds, there was no way they could carry out such attacks in the southern African country.
