Trump threatens to cut off aid to Palestinians

WASHINGTON-(MaraviPost)-The US has announced that it will hold back more than half of the funding it provides for a UN agency that supports Palestinians, about two weeks after President Donald Trump threatened to pull funding for the group.

The decision drew condemnation from Palestinians, praise from Israel, and expressions of deep concern from UN officials and refugee groups worried about the humanitarian impact and particularly the potential for further destabilization of a region already reeling from conflict in Syria.

The US will withhold more than half its scheduled $125 million payment from the United Nations Relief Works Agency, which provides humanitarian aid, education, social services and medical care to Palestinian refugees in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the move had nothing to do with “punishing” the Palestinians for their refusal to enter into negotiations with Israel, or their decision to push for a UN vote that resulted in overwhelming international condemnation of the Trump administration’s decision to unilaterally recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

“This is not aimed at punishing anyone,” Nauert said Tuesday, as she outlined the US decision to release $60 million in funding for the agency, while indefinitely withholding another $65 million.

But in early January, about two weeks after the UN vote, Trump tweeted that, “we pay the Palestinians HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation or respect.” He went on to say, “with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace,” he added, “why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?”

Nauert referred questions about the tweet to the White House, but others charged that the funding cut was clearly politically motivated.

“We hope that the US administration and Congress can cooperate in reversing this politically motivated cut in aid before its effects ripple through the Middle East,” said Jan Egeland, Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council.

“The move will have devastating consequences for vulnerable Palestinian refugees across the Middle East, including hundreds of thousands of refugee children in the West Bank and Gaza, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria who depend on the agency for their education,” said Egeland, a former Norwegian foreign minister and former UN undersecretary general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator.

“It will also deny their parents a social safety net that helps them to survive, and undermine the UN agency’s ability to respond in the event of another flare up in the conflict,” Egeland said.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he was “very concerned” about the impact on the region.

“First of all, UNRWA is not a Palestinian institution, it is a UN institution,” he said at a UN press conference Tuesday.

The services UNRWA provides “are of extreme importance, not only for the well-being of this population, and there is a serious humanitarian concern here,” he said. “But also in my opinion and the opinion that is shared by most international observers, including some Israeli ones, it is an important factor of stability.”

Jordan and Lebanon are already under extreme strain from having to support refugees fleeing the Syrian conflict. If those countries also suddenly face the burden of having to deal with under- or unfunded schools, medical clinics and other services, “this will create a very, very serious problem,” Guterres said, “and we’ll do everything we can to avoid this situation to occur.”

A UN diplomat said “we consider these developments worrisome for obvious humanitarian reasons.”

“Didn’t end up being zero”
Nauert said concerns about regional stability were reflected in the decision to cut only a portion of the funding and not “zero” out the budget.

“A big part of the reason we didn’t, after a lot of interagency deliberations.

Pope Francis predicts world nuclear war

VATICAN-(MaraviPost)-The global leader of the Roman Catholic church, Pope Francis, has dropped a serious warning on the world getting nearer to witnessing a nuclear war.

Pope Francis speaks to reporters onboard the plane for his trip to Chile and Peru January 15, 2018.

According to a report by Reuters, Pope Francis said on Monday he was really afraid about the danger of nuclear war and that the world now stood at “the very limit”.

His comment, made as he flew off for a visit to Chile and Peru, came after Hawaii issued a false missile alert that provoked panic in the U.S. state and highlighted the risk of possible unintended nuclear war with North Korea.

Asked if he was worried about the possibility of nuclear war, Pope Francis said: “I think we are at the very limit. I am really afraid of this. One accident is enough to precipitate things.”

He did not mention Hawaii or North Korea.

Pope Francis has often flagged the danger of nuclear warfare and in November he appeared to harden the Catholic Church’s teaching against nuclear weapons, saying countries should not stockpile them even for the purpose of deterrence.

As reporters boarded his plane bound for Chile, Vatican officials handed out a photograph taken in 1945 that shows a young Japanese boy carrying his dead brother on his shoulders following the U.S. nuclear attack on Nagasaki.

“I was moved when I saw this. The only thing I could think of adding were the words ‘the fruit of war’,” Francis said, referring to a caption put on the back of the image.

“I wanted to have it reprinted and distributed because an image like this can be more moving than a thousand words. That is why I wanted to share it with you,” he said.

Malawi former President Bakili Muluzi splits his sons to support DPP and MCP- Pundits

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Some Malawian political analysts have described the decision of Francis Muluzi, the son of former President Dr. Bakili Muluzi to join the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) as his father’s plan.

Muluzi disclosed his plan at Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre on Tuesday, where MCP’s big fish Muhammad Sidik Mia welcomed some new members in the party.

According to Dedza district based political analyst Azika Azizi, the decision is part of Bakili Muluzi’s political trap toward the next government after 2019 tripartite elections.

Azizi said that the former President knows that his corruption case will automatically resume if MCP took government after the 2019 tripartite elections hence the decision.

He further said that Bakili Muluzi knows that knows that MCP and the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has high chances to lead Malawians after the coming general elections.

The Dedza political analyst said Bakili Muluzi already spoiled the ruling DPP with support from his son, Atupele Muluzi who is currently the minister of health.

“Bakili Muluzi knows that he will automatically be safe if DPP take government next year. He is also aware that he will not be safe especially if MCP win the elections hence the decision,” said Azizi.

However in an interview, Francis Muluzi said his decision has nothing to do with his family.

Muluzi said will contest for a Parliamentary seat in Blantyre Kabula constituency under MCP ticket said the Malawi’s oldest party is the only future and hope for Malawians.

According to him, his decision will not harm his father as he is also a product of MCP.

“My father was a Secretary General of MCP before forming his party, United Democratic Front. Despite the decision is my own as a matured person, I don’t think it will annoyed him,” he said.

Effort to talk to Bakili Muluzi proved futile.

Undemocratic tendencies rocking Malawi’s major political parties-Analysts

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Political commentators have described the country’s major parties as far from being democratic because of the ‘political dynasties’ that make them more of personal “collections” than mass-parties driven by people’s agenda.

In the Alliance for Democracy (Aford), president Enoch Chihana is a son to the party’s founding president and pro-democracy fighter Chakufwa Chihana.

The People’s Party, founded by former president Dr Joyce Banda, is said to be positioning her son, Roy Kachale, who is also Zomba Malosa member of Parliament (MP), to become the next leader of her People’s Party (PP) after firing its acting president Uladi Mussa.

Mussa claims he was thrown out of the party because Banda was clearing the path for her son to take over. But both Kachale and PP officials have refuted the allegations as unfounded.

A source close to Dr Banda, said the allegations made by Mussa are sad and aim to tarnish the image of the PP. the official said Mussa’s dismissal is the result of other issues and unrelated to who is the leaders of the PP.

The analysts responding to The Nation Newspaper question on what they make of a trend in political parties where sons or brothers of founding leaders tend to rise to the top, affirm that political parties are creating political dynasties and not mass political entities.

The trend is also seen in the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) where President Peter Mutharika, who is leader of DPP, succeeded his brother, the late Bingu wa Mutharika, who founded the party.

In United Democratic Front (UDF) where Atupele Muluzi also became president of the party after his father, Bakili Muluzi, who co-founded it.

Of all the country’s major political parties, perhaps the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is the only one that has not evolved into the genealogy of leadership pertaining to the founder.

Political scientist Ernest Thindwa from University of Malawi’s (Unima) Chancellor College said that it was unfortunate that in Malawi political parties are not mass-parties, but personal properties.

Thindwa observed that instead of being conveyor belts between citizens and government, the political parties have become the weakest link of the country’s democracy.

“People who form political parties, view them as their personal properties. They determine the leadership succession.” Thindwa said.

On his part, another political commentator Henry Chingaipe, said the country’s political parties were far from being democratic as they revolve around their founders and not membership and a set of ideas.

“This is a worrisome trend. It shows and reinforces the view we have always spoken about that our political parties are less of political parties but are more of family collections or family outfits.”
Chingaipe said there was very little effective intra-party democracy and what is seen is merely “choreography and semblance of democracy.”

George Phiri, a political scientist from the University of Livingstonia (UNILIA), corroborated with Chingaipe and Thindwa’s views, saying the parties have yet to open up and transform into parties of the people.

He said: “Instead, they are parties of families. In this case, it gives us history that democracy in Malawi is not a democracy that is practised elsewhere. Our democracy is quite unique, but people have not realised that this uniqueness is harmful because it can kill political parties.”

Phiri also noted the issue of funding where parties rely entirely on founders or leaders for survival has resulted in political dynasties.

But UDF spokesperson Ken Ndanga said his party had always followed its constitution which allows anybody to contest for any position.

He said: “Any person whether an uncle, a nephew, a mother or father of any political leader who was there before has the right to contest for any position so let those who think that is not proper come up with a regulation stopping it or just challenge the leadership at a legitimate convention.”

Historian Desmond Phiri, in his recent DD Phiri Insight column published in The Daily Times bemoaned the political dynasties system arguing that under such a system a nation is served by mediocrities and not the best of the elite.

Chihana could not be reached for comment as his phone was out of reach whereas presidential press secretary Mgeme Kalilani and DPP spokesperson Francis Kasaila did not pick their phones when called.

Malawi Govt warns private employment agencies against disregarding LEG

The Malawi Government has warned private employment agencies it will take drastic action against those deviating from the Labour Export Guidelines (LEG).

The warning comes amid reports that two young Malawian women alleged to be working in Iraq as domestic workers are subjected to harsh working conditions.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, Minister of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, Francis Kasaila, noted that some unscrupulous local private employment agencies and individuals continue to facilitate the migration of young Malawian women to the Middle East for employment as cheap domestic workers.

“This is done in total disregard of the labour export guidelines issued by the Ministry of Labour in August and government’s suspension of the recruitment of domestic workers from Malawi for employment in the Middle East,” said the minister in a statement.

Kasaila acknowledged that the ministry has information that there are two young Malawian women in Iraq as domestic workers who are working in inhumane conditions.

“Apparently, the local private recruitment agencies and individuals who facilitated the employment of these young women by-passed the requirement for clearance with the ministry [of Labour] and the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security,” he observed.

The minister added that such actions were tantamount to human trafficking which is punishable under the Trafficking in Persons Act Prospective of 2015 of the laws of Malawi.

Kasaila has, therefore, urged private employment agencies and labour migrants to familiarize themselves with labour export guidelines to avoid such incidences.

“Prospective labour migrants are also advised to report any private employment agencies that flout the guidelines to my ministry, Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security or the Office of the Inspector General of Police,” he appealed.

Meanwhile, government has said it has instituted investigations to establish how the alleged young women managed to leave the country and whoever facilitated their trip will be brought to book.

“Government wishes to assure the nation that it is doing all it can to bring the young [Malawian] women back to the country within the shortest time possible,” added Kasaila.

White House doc to provide more details about Trump’s health

WASHINGTON (AP) — A fuller readout of President Donald Trump’s health following his first medical check-up is expected later Tuesday.

Trump’s White House physician – Navy doctor Ronny Jackson – declared Trump to be in “excellent health” following last Friday’s exam at the Walter Reed military hospital in Maryland.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Jackson will attend her briefing Tuesday to provide a more complete readout on Trump’s physical health.

Not expected are any conclusions about Trump’s mental acuity.

Questions about Trump’s mental fitness have been raised following comments attributed to some of his close advisers in a new book, and his recent slurring of words on national TV.

Presidents aren’t required to get a checkup, but modern presidents do so regularly and release a doctor’s report on the findings.

Mugabe’s offer to return US5 billion to Zimbabwe Govt

HARARE-(MaraviPost)-Zimbabwe’s former President Robert Mugabe and his family have heeded President Munangagwa’s call to return externalized funds.

In his letter dated 7 January 2018, the Mugabe’s said they wanted to lead the way by returning funds to government coffers and appealed to other high profile government officials to follow suit.

Mugabe said he had not been pressured to take this move. He urged all Zimbabweans to work in harmony and support the incumbent President.

He also blasted his former spin doctor, Jonathan Moyo’s statement that the military’s intervention was a coup.’

The military were targeting criminals like Moyo, Kasukuwere,Chombo,Mphoko and others who had infiltrated the party.

Mugabe admitted that the so called G40 cabal led by Jonathan Moyo had endorsed former first lady Grace Mugabe to succeed him.

He however refused to divulge the whereabouts of his wife Grace,Patrick Zhuwawo and Kasukuwere.

It is unclear whether President Munangagwa will embrace Mugabe’s offer or if he will ask his predecessor to surrender more funds purportedly externalized.

Presidential spokesman George Charamba refused to comment on the latest development.

Road to 2019 elections: Mia to challenge Msowoya during convention…….. Fisher Kondowe to contest on

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Politician Sidik Mia has confirmed his ambition to contest as running mate for the MCP prudential candidate in the 2019 elections.

The development mean that Mia will automatically face the current MCP vice President who is also Speaker of Parliament and MP for Karonga Nyungwe, Richard Msowoya.

Mia made his position known in Blantyre when he welcomed aspirants that shown interest to contest in the parliamentary elections under the MCP ticket.

During the same meeting, Nyasa Big Bullets’s player Fisher Kondowe announced that he will contest in the 2019 elections as an aspirant MP for Blantyre City South Constituency on MCP ticket.

The coming of Mia to the MCP has brought tension between his followers and those of incumbent vice president Richard Msowoya.

Mia said he would contest for the running mate position at the MCP convention. The date for the convention is yet to be announced.

The delay to state the dates is another source of controversy in the MCP.

Later in the afternoon after Mia’s declaration, a group of MCP MPs met in Lilongwe where they endorsed the seasoned politician for the running mate post.

They said they have recommended to MCP that Gustav Kaliwo be suspended as general secretary saying he has shown gross incompetence by failing to give policy direction to the party.

In addition, the MPs accuse Kaliwo of being part of the grouping which signed a letter criticising party president Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.

The MPs claimed Kaliwo has also been absent for three consecutive meetings of the party’s NEC, which is contrary to the party’s constitution.

There was no immediate comment from Kaliwo as he could not reached on his mobile phone.

Cancer-stricken Morgan Tsvangirai to lead opposition in Zimbabwe elections

HARARE-(MaraviPost)-Zimbabwe’s main opposition political group, the MDC Alliance has confirmed that Morgan Tsvangirai will be their presidential flag bearer in the forthcoming presidential elections.

The MDC Alliance includes People’s Democratic Party (PDP), led by Tendai Biti, Welshman Ncube’s MDC (Movement for Democratic Change-N), Transform Zimbabwe of Jacob Ngarivhume; Zanu Ndonga headed by Denford Masiyarira and the Multi-Racial Christian Democrats led by Mathias Guchutu.

The alliance also announced that despite the current condition of Tsvangirai, campaigns will kick off this week and rallies will be addressed by the key principals of the alliance.

He has not formally advised us that he intends to stand down . . . So until that happens we will continue as an alliance to support his candidature as agreed in the alliance document.

Tsvangirai is currently in South Africa where he is receiving medical attention for cancer of the colon, a condition the 65 year old publicly declared in 2016.

Tsvangirai’s illness is a highly contentious issue in opposition circles, with many suggesting that the veteran politician steps down to allow ‘younger and healthier’ candidates to run the race.

Pictures of an ailing Tsvangirai during a surprise visit by president Emmerson Mnangagwa fueled doubts over the former’s ability to contest in this year’s elections.

Tsvangirai himself, further fueled such doubts over his candidacy, when he released a statement indicating that the older generation of leaders should prepare to pass the baton to a new generation of leaders.

But the principals of the MDC Alliance think otherwise.

“Everyone has read his New Year message as a hint that it might be an appropriate time to hand over to a younger generation but he is the alliance candidate for now,” said Professor Welshman Ncube, MDC Alliance spokesperson.

“He has not formally advised us that he intends to stand down . . . So until that happens we will continue as an alliance to support his candidature as agreed in the alliance document

Ncube however admits that the absence of Tsvangirai at the rallies is likely to affect the alliance’s performance in the coming elections.

“Of course if he is not well enough to be on the campaign trail on a daily basis particularly, once an election has been declared.

Obviously that will affect the alliance. But we have sufficient experience within the alliance of foot soldiers who have been in the trenches for a very long time who will be able to basically campaign and continue mobilising the masses,” he said.

Also on the agenda of the MDC Alliance is engagement of the country’s electoral commission to implement reforms that would guarantee a credible, free and fair election.

North Korea says Donald Trump’s nuclear button tweet is a ‘spasm of a lunatic’

The tone of Tuesday’s article was not uncommon for the North Korean media.

North Korea’s state-run media say US President Donald Trump’s tweet about having a bigger nuclear button than leader Kim Jong Un’s is the “spasm of a lunatic”.

Rodong Sinmun, the ruling party newspaper, lashed out at Trump in a commentary on Tuesday that took issue with the US commander in chief’s January 3 tweet that “I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!”

The tone of Tuesday’s article was not uncommon for the North Korean media. But Trump’s willingness to respond in kind — he has repeatedly called Kim “little rocket man” — is rare for an American leader and has led to several fiery verbal barrages since he took office nearly a year ago.
