Opinion: The Difficult Politics Of Malawi

By Burnett Munthali

Malawian politics is quite challenging, and when you are in haste, things don’t move in your favor. Brown Mpinganjira was one of the most powerful ministers in the United Democratic Front (UDF). There was high expectations that he would take over from Bakili Muluzi. However, due to overzealousness , he began to be pompous and ended up establishing his own party, National Democratic Alliance (NDA). We all know how Brown Mpinganjira has ended in politics, he never went far until Bingu wa Mutharika took over from Muluzi.

Brown Mpinganjira
Brown Mpinganjira remains DPP spokesperson

We had Gustav Kaliwo, Secretary General of Malawians Congress Party (MCP). At one time he felt too big in the party and started fighting with his party President. What followed next, he was fired from the party and his party was given to Mkaka. We also had notable names such as Jessie Kabwila, Njobvuyalema including Felix Jumbe. They all tried to fight with their party President but they ended up being bored out of the party and nobody knows where they are and what they are doing.

Nankhumwa dares Chakwera on AIP

As we speak, there’s someone else in the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) namely Kondwani Nankhumwa. He comes from Mulanje Central the same area with Brown Mpinganjira. I remember very well that Brown Mpinganjira used to feel great about himself such that he started his own political party. The same is true today, Nankhumwa feels big and thinks that he can snatch the DPP into his own hands. Did whatever is happening in DPP today, many Malawians have questions: “Where is the opposition party?”. This is because whatever MCP is doing in the running of the stairs of government, we are supposed to have a strong opposition party in Parliament to ensure checks and balances but instead of taking government to task, the leader of opposition is busy fighting with his own party. Why?

First of all, before we proceed, we must know; Who is funding Nankhumwa? Where does he get all the money which he is distributing in order to bring confusion in his own party? You may recall very well after DPP lost government in 2020, Kondwani Nankhumwa went to have an audience with Cecilia Tamanda Kadzamira, one of the strong patrons of MCP. She’s is considered just like a founding member of the Malawi Congress Party. What is most surprising is that soon after DPP lost government, Kondwani Nankhumwa went to meet Cecilia Tamanda Kadzamira at her residence. This is the MCP patron. From there are saw MCP government in collaboration with the courts choosing him to be the Leader Of Opposition.

Ladies and gentlemen, where did you ever see Leader Of Opposition being chosen by government? One other thing, when it was discovered that Kondwani Nankhumwa was chosen as Leader Of Opposition by government, he stopped reporting to his party President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, a very senior official in the DPP. Mutharika was just like his own father as party President. Before all Parliament deliberations, Nankhumwa is supposed to meet Arthur Peter Mutharika as his party President for consultation and brain storming. Unfortunately, as soon as Kondwani Nankhumwa became Leader Of Opposition, he stopped completely consulting his President, he became pompous and selfish, he established his own camp and started fighting with his own President so that Mutharika steps down and Nankhumwa takes over immediately.

John Tembo
John Zenus Ungapake Tembo (born September 14, 1932) is a Malawian politician who served for years as President of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP)

Hon John Tembo stepped down and handed over party President to Reverend Lazarus Chakwera at the convention. Every party President steps down and hands over leadership at the convention when that time comes. Even Bakili Muluzi of the United Democratic Front (UDF) stepped down at the convention where Bingu wa Mutharika was chosen and took over as presidential candidate.

What is surprising is that after Kondwani Nankhumwa visited Cecilia Tamanda Kadzamira and became political friends with MCP and started receiving financial support from there, he established his own camp, stopped reporting to Mutharika and started doing his own things. Nankhumwa started mobilizing people within the DPP in a campaign that Mutharika should step down. Another surprising thing is that almost all followers surrounding Kondwani Nankhumwa are Joyce Banda’s sympathizers. In other words, the people who have chosen to partner with Kondwani Nankhumwa are not DPP members but strangers in that party. Many of them are PP members.

For example, Ralph Jooma abandoned Bingu wa Mutharika soon after his death and joined People’s Party. Billy Malata celebrated the death of Bingu wa Mutharika. You might remember that some people blew trumpets in celebration of the death of Bingu. Joyce Banda is one of the people who celebrated Bingu’s death. Infact Joyce Banda was in the fore front of these celebrations. Joyce Chitsulo from Mwanza is another PP sympathizer. She also was part of the celebrations. Ken Msonda, at all know him very well, was part of the happy people that Bingu died. Mark Botoman slaughtered a cow in celebration that Bingu wa Mutharika had died.

It’s a pity that Ken Msonda and Billy Malata could hold a press briefing during which they asked Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to explain who killed Professor Bingu wa Mutharika. It is obvious and everyone knows that Bingu was killed at State House so there’s no reason why Billy Malata and Ken Msonda could ask for an explanation as to what caused Bingu’s death. If they were in celebration of his death it simply means they already know what killed Bingu.

Going back to history, you will remember that when Albert Muwalo was killed, the MCP celebrated. When Solobala s killed on 1 February 1966, the MCP celebrated. When Orton Chirwa died in prison in 1992, MCP celebrated. MCP were excited when three cabinet ministers and one Member of Parliament were killed in Mwanza in 1983. When Bingu wa Mutharika died in 2012 some PP members were very happy and one of those people who did this include Billy Malata.

It is very surprising that Kondwani Nankhumwa is teaming up with people who celebrated the death of Bingu wa Mutharika to help him running the DPP. He is receiving money from government and support from the courts to make this happen. However, many Malawians are asking, “Can Kondwani Nankhumwa win elections and become president of Malawi?”

Let us be realistic here without talking any political sides, can Malawians waste their time and vote for Kondwani Nankhumwa and become President of Malawi? For sure, they wouldn’t do that because Malawians are tired of trial and error. The people of Malawi want someone with economic background to take over this country in 2025 and move forward.

Recently, Grezelder Jeffrey was used by Kondwani Nankhumwa to call for an illegal NGC meeting at Golden Peacock. The Secretary General Grezelder Jeffrey said about forty five NGC members were ready to attend that meeting but surprisingly, what we saw is only 23 out of 71 NGC members in attendance. In short, we can say that this was an illegal meeting held at Golden Peacock because according to the DPP constitution, the Secretary General cannot call for an NGC meeting without the involvement of the Central Executive Committee and without informing or approval of the party President.

We saw Kondwani Nankhumwa looking very disappointed at Golden Peacock who ended up telling news reporters to briefly go outside the hotel who were present to cover the event. Many Malawians were amazed, “What was it that made Kondwani Nankhumwa so disappointed to an extent of almost shredding tears?”.

Ladies and gentlemen, democracy is the control of an organization by the majority of its members. From what we have seen at Golden Peacock NGC meeting, it is now clear and obvious that the majority of DPP members do not want Kondwani Nankhumwa. ” Uwu ndi moto wa mapesi ndipo mapesi ake opanda feteleza”, literary meaning to say that “This is simply maize stalk fire and the type of maize stalk that is burning in the fire grew without any fertilizer. This politically means that the majority of the people who didn’t attend the Kondwani Nankhumwa/Grezelder Jeffrey NGC are behind Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika. This is embarrassing to Kondwani Nankhumwa and Grezelder Jeffrey.

Of MCP infighting and need for independent crisis management

By Kelvin Sulugwe

The infighting in the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is a very good sign that the party is democratic, but needs an independent crisis management, damage control team If you asked me.

I would be very slow to tell you why I have decided to write this piece today, but it has to be enlightened and I have taken a very sober minded stand in what is happening in the party right now.

At first, I was very concerned with the ongoing fights that have given birth to factions such as that of Richard Msowoya, Gustav Kaliwo, Sidik Mia and Jessie Kabwira, but now.

I decided to take it from another angle. This is a sign of mature democracy in the party. It means MCP is indeed very democratic and that people are able to take different stands against matters, unlike other parties where blind loyalty is the uniform for patriotism. It should be noted that in a democracy, everyone is able to express his/her views, but at the end, it is the majority view that prevails.

The majority will speak at the coming convention, for now, here is what I wish to put forward. For starters, it was very disturbing when a letter written by the Vice President Hon Richard Msowoya leaked to the media.

One should be of the view that such high profile communication should be safeguarded with the utmost confidentiality the two sides can afford. I will not stand here to accuse a side that leaked the letter, because I have no idea who did.

It might be the side of Hon Msowoya who leaked it to buy public sympathy or it might be the other side that leaked it to make Msowoya less matured. We move on. Then, after the letter, came the decision (not officially communicated) that the party decided to fire Kaliwo, suspended the rest.

The most disturbing occurrence was the fact that even party youths were pictured going to the headquarters, carrying banners that called for the blood of Kaliwo out of the party.

This is where I am afraid and like some people have observed, indeed, MCP lacks political strategists that are able to manage party crisis. What happened, if the firing is true and the news of possible impeachments are simply wrongs that will be added to the first wrong, of Vice Presidents letter being leaked to the media.

In the end, two wrongs do not make a right. We will sink from one level to another and at the end; we will be bruised to the ground. What people like me expected were not meetings to fire the other fractions. I will explain something later on that. Sometimes, political moves should not be very obvious.

When they become very predictable, we the opponents can easily lead the way, while making it look like we are the ones making such decisions. When Sidik Mia first joined the party and the rumours for possible fights started going viral, MCP hosted a political rally that had all these giants together.

That was very brilliant and it pained our major opponent to that fact that he changed direction of trying to disturb the party. MCP is a big threat to Progressive Democratic Party (DPP). I can say this a million times even in my sleep. It is the party that Malawians are looking up to.

Let me tell you something. No matter how the DPP can try to convince Malawians of the atrocities of MCP, we will come to one fact, the people who did such atrocities are no longer in MCP.

Hon Dr Lazarus Chakwera was not there when MYP terrorized Malawians. Hon Msowoya was not there, just like Hon Eisenhower Mkaka, Jessie Kabwira and most of the current MCP members were not there when this happened.

On top of this, not many people who are bound to vote in 2019 were there. I was young and never felt whatever people describe about MCP and I know there are lots of people like me who were not there.

Ofourse I can remind you some of the people who were there in such a time and I can easily bring to memory people such as Hon Nicholus Dausi, Hetherwick Mtaba and Dr Bakili Muluzi. They were there and of late, Hon Nicholus Dausi has received his compensation package for being there.

Today, he stands on a podium and saays he will reveal what MCP did. I can’t wait to hear what he did. Now, it is evident that what we have is a transformed MCP, with completely new ideas.

God has served the party and cleansed it. He has chased the bad omens, most of who run to DPP and are now standing on podiums and promise to reveal what they did in the name of MCP of their time. Someone is very afraid and it is at this point that MCP needs to be very serious in decision making and strategies.

I suggest, since it is already a rumour that the vice president has been fired, it remains such, let MCP fire and suspend no one. Instead, conduct three massive rallies in the north, central and south.

Tell people that we understand of the infighting currently rocking the party, but the party is working on it and very soon, everything will be sorted out. Tell people no one has been fired or suspended make sure that at such rallies, all the people should be present.

Invitations should be extended to Richard Msowoya, Kaliwo, Kabwira and the rest of them. Let there be no impeachment at parliament and pretend like nothing happened. This will indeed be a new song for a democratic party in Malawi.

If someone has eaten money from DPP, they will be put to shame, especially if they refuse to attend such rallies. Such a move will cripple all efforts for public sympathy and will send a strong message to people that MCP is ready to govern. Then we know that at the end of the day, general convention will say it all.

Believe me, Kaliwo is not a threat and I doubt he can even win back his post at general convention, the same way I doubt he can be of use to DPP. What they are enjoying now is fame and platform that party decisions are giving to them.

They don’t deserve such a decision and it is love and tolerance to their noise that will cripple them, if indeed they are making noise.

No matter what, Dr Chakwera should not be afraid, he has the support of many and come convention, he will be elected president once more. Sidik Mia also has more chances of beating Msowoya nice and clean to be the vice president.

Kaliwo can’t beat Mkaka on Secretary General Posts. In the end, these are simply my views, anything can happen. It is my prayer that MCP will now think of having a crisis management and damage control team, far from the NEC, an independent party body that should come in to sort out issues involving the NEC members.

Dr Chakwera is no way in a position to chair a meeting involving him and his vice president Msowoya. Again, party youth, with no political understanding of crisis management and winning strategies should not dictate what happens to people who speak against certain party decisions. We want to win in 2019 and we can only do it by being democratic, like we have always been.

Lastly, let not MCP be pushed to an early convention. We will do it when time comes. Long Live MCP, Long life to Dr Chakwera.

Road to 2019 elections: Mia to challenge Msowoya during convention…….. Fisher Kondowe to contest on

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Politician Sidik Mia has confirmed his ambition to contest as running mate for the MCP prudential candidate in the 2019 elections.

The development mean that Mia will automatically face the current MCP vice President who is also Speaker of Parliament and MP for Karonga Nyungwe, Richard Msowoya.

Mia made his position known in Blantyre when he welcomed aspirants that shown interest to contest in the parliamentary elections under the MCP ticket.

During the same meeting, Nyasa Big Bullets’s player Fisher Kondowe announced that he will contest in the 2019 elections as an aspirant MP for Blantyre City South Constituency on MCP ticket.

The coming of Mia to the MCP has brought tension between his followers and those of incumbent vice president Richard Msowoya.

Mia said he would contest for the running mate position at the MCP convention. The date for the convention is yet to be announced.

The delay to state the dates is another source of controversy in the MCP.

Later in the afternoon after Mia’s declaration, a group of MCP MPs met in Lilongwe where they endorsed the seasoned politician for the running mate post.

They said they have recommended to MCP that Gustav Kaliwo be suspended as general secretary saying he has shown gross incompetence by failing to give policy direction to the party.

In addition, the MPs accuse Kaliwo of being part of the grouping which signed a letter criticising party president Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.

The MPs claimed Kaliwo has also been absent for three consecutive meetings of the party’s NEC, which is contrary to the party’s constitution.

There was no immediate comment from Kaliwo as he could not reached on his mobile phone.

MCP MPs differs on the Party’s July convention; Belekanyama calls it illegal, while Kabwira says it is the future of the Party?

MCP Leaders
MCP Leadership

The main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) legislatures, hold different of views on the controversial July MCP convention that is organized by its Secretary-General, Gustav Kaliwo.

Kaliwo defended calling for the convention, after he was pressurized by the Party’s district and regional chairpersons.

It is expected that the convention will be held in Zomba or Mangochi.

Meanwhile the MCP SG has invited all Party members to the convention, including Dr Lazarus Chakwera, President of MCP.

However, the SG’s decision has brought division amongst the Party members, including Members of Parliament (MPs) as some are in support while others are not.

Among the MPs who are in support of the convention, include Salima North-West MP Jessie Kabwira. She described the July 7 convention as a future of the Party toward winning the 2019 general elections.

According to Kabwira, who insists she is still the Party’s eligible Publicity Secretary, despite being fired by Chakwera last year, she said there are a lot things that the Party needs to be ironed out before the general elections.

She said among these include the unconstitutional firing of members in some Party positions, and how Oarty President Chakwera uses the Party funds.

“Calling for the convention, is not illegal; it does not mean that we want to dethrone Chakwera; but to put things in order so that at the coming 2019 general elections, we take the Party smoothly,” said Kabwira.

She said she didn’t have anything against Dr. Chakwera and that she was the one who put him on the map as the Party’s President, within a period of eight month before 2014 general elections.

However, MP for Lilongwe Msinja South, Lingson Belekanyama said the convention was not inline with the Party’s constitution, especially article 39. This article gives mandate to call for a convention, to the National Executive Committee, and for the President to decide.

Belekanyama furthermore, distanced himself from being part of the July convention organizing committee, as stated earlier by Kaliwo.

“I cannot take part in such kind of convention, unless it has received the blessings from the NEC and President. Therefore, if Kaliwo said I am the deputy secretary general to the organizing committee, then he was cheating the country and himself,” said Belekanyama.

Adding that “this is not an MCP convention, as it is not inline with our constitution.”

In his remarks, Kaliwo said the Party’s constitution allows him to call for a convention, after receiving a call from the district and regional chairpersons.

He then asked those who are against the decision, to challenge it in the Court. He insists that he is going ahead with the convention preparations, which he said it will be held 7-9 July, 2017.

Secretary General Gustav Kaliwo barred from attending MCP NEC meeting

Ameteur Treason Plotters
Kaliwo (L): barred

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Secretary General (SG) Gustav Kaliwo was on Wednesday barred from attending National Executive Committee (NEC) under way at the party’s headquarters in the capital Lilongwe.

MCP inside sources told The Maravi Post that Kaliwo was asked to vacate the premises as he is deemed to be siding the disgruntled districts and regional chairpersons who are demanding for the party’s main convention over poor leadership.

The Maravi Post upon arrival at the premises soon after getting a tip that MCP SG Kaliwo was sent packing, this reporter was greeted by strange party youths who have been deployed to provide security around the venue.

It was discovered that only those on the list were the ones allowed to attend the meeting which according to sources is aimed at ironing out contentious issues the party is engulfed into.

The Maravi Post found out that all MCP NEC members were invited to the indaba including lawmakers Felix Jumbe, Joseph Njomvuyalema, Makala Ngozo, Jessie Kabwira who have fallen out of  favor of their leader Lazurus Chakwera.

However, it was also discovered that Eisnhower Mkaka was said to be the one handling the services of Kaliwo as SG which according to observers, the conduct contravenes party’s constitution.

Mkaka who is currently at the hem of the party as deputy Secretary General is said to be manipulating Chakwera decisions on critical issues. According to sources Mkaka’s position is not recognised by MCP convention as it wasn’t contested during 2013 convention.

Some MCP old guards have questioned Chakwera’s decision of using Mkaka as SG while sidelining Kaliwo in most party functions.Just last week, Chakwera sent Mkaka to represent him at Kulamba ceremony in Zambia leaving out Kaliwo who was duly elected by the convention.

“Indeed SG Kaliwo was here before the meeting but was asked to leave the premises without giving him reasons which even us will not provide. This is an internal matter which it must be resolved quietly without involving the media,” said the source.

When asked why she was not attending the indaba as per the invitation and that SG Kaliwo was bared from the indaba,  MCP Spokesperson Dr. Jessie Kabwira said was visiting the hospital for a treatment.

Kabwira said if she wants to attend the meeting then security personell must be hired for her safety.

” I just heard that SG Kaliwo was bared from the meeting. So, if that’s the case who is chairing the meeting apart from him?

“Kaliwo was duly elected by the convention therefore as the party’s keeper he is supposed to be there at all cost.

“Will come back to you for answers as to why Kaliwo wasn’t allowed to be part of the NEC meeting,”said Kabwira.

Echoing on the same, MP Jumbe hinted that he could not dare to attend such a big forum without SG Kaliwo.

Jumbe said it was against the party constitution to hold the NEC meeting without it’s SG saying the move will continue affecting the party’s structures.

Several attempts to get reaction from Kaliwo proved futile as his mobile phone was not answered.
