2024 Goshen-FAM Women’s League: Servants beat Policewomen to go top

….Civo 2-1 Eagles

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-There was a crucial and entertaining battle between Civil Servants and Policewomen in the 2024 Goshen-FAM Women’s league in the central region as Civo snatched a late victory over Blue Eagles ladies at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

The match was highly contested and the hype was just too high to the satisfaction of the fans who came to watch the battle.

Civo Women team started it off in the 32th minute through a goal from Maureen Nyasulu who capitalized on opponent’s poor defending.

However, Civo celebration short-lived as Blue Eagles equalized through Temwa Kaonga in the 37th minute into the first half through the penalty.

The two sides continued attacking each other for other goals but their efforts yielded nothing until the last whistle for the recess.

Second stanza started also with the rhythm of the game higher, the host pressed through Jessie Joseph, Benadetta Nyenga, Maureen Nyasulu and Monalia Davie but their efforts were for several times dealt with by the Blue Eagles ladies shot-stopper Neema Safiyana who rised for the occasion in that morning.

Blue Eagles on the other hand launched numerous attacks and created chances through Jestina Bwanausi, Maggie Msiska, Jenin Mwale, Captain Temwa Kaonga and Memory Banda but lacked killer punch to get the desired goals.

As the time was fast ticking for the match to close, Civo again capitalized on Eagle’s poor defending to score and snatch a late winner at 90 plus 4 minutes through Captain Jessie Joseph.

Soon after that goal the centre referee Charity Zenus blew the whistle to end the battle and the Policewomen were left down on the ground with the pain as if they were on rolling exercise at the Police training School.

The victory for Civil Women team means they continue leading the table in the central region with 16 points from 6 games. They have managed to win 5 and drawn 1, they are seconded by MDF Lioness with 13 points from 5 games.

Their head coach Collins Pofera was excited with the result.

“First of all let me congratulate the girls for executing well our plans, they gave it all from first to the last whistle. Every time we meet Eagles they give us tough time but today we planned well for them. Our aim is to win the title and National Championship so that next season we play CAF|Cosafa Qualifiers”, said Pofera

Blue Eagles head coach Alupheous Nyoni was disappointed with the defeat especially conceding with the last kick of the match.

“Painful defeat indeed we tried out best but a simple mistake cost us the points,it’s part of the game.Salute to our goalkeeper she came for the party today being the second choice she has proven a point. This defeat should be an encouraging factor to us as we are aiming at playing in the national Championship”, echoed Nyoni.

The area 30 national Police Headquarters based side occupies position four with 6 points from 6 games played.

Civo Service Women’s captain Jessie Joseph is the current top goal scorer with six goals while Deborah Henry and Chikondi Gondwe for Silver Strikers ladies have both scored 5 goals alongside Premier Bet Dedza Dynamos Queens forward, Tryness Chawala.

Who could be the Premier League’s standout player of 2024/25?

The Premier League is arguably the strongest domestic football competition on the planet, as it features numerous elite clubs with a host of world-class talent.

Manchester City are no doubt the most stacked when it comes to quality personnel within their ranks, as they will aim for a fifth title in a row this campaign. However, other top teams like Arsenal and Liverpool also possess some of the league’s standout players.

Each season, the most outstanding Premier League player is recognised with the PFA Player of the Year award. Looking ahead to the remainder of 2024/25, several players are likely to stake a serious claim to be crowned the league’s best.

Here we will look at the top three candidates to win the prestigious individual honour, with a look at why they could have what it takes to win it.

Kevin de Bruyne

Kevin de Bruyne is seen as the leading candidate to secure the Player of the Year award in football betting this season at odds of 9/2. The football tips suggest his strongest competition will be in the form of several of his own City teammates.

The Belgian has already won the award twice before, which shows that he has exactly what it takes to be the league’s most consistently great player throughout a season.

De Bruyne had an excellent season in 2023/24 that was only disrupted by injury, as he played in just 18 league games, in which he managed four goals and 10 assists. If he can replicate that level of form over more than 30 appearances, then he will surely force the award into his hands come next summer.

The legendary midfielder has had to deal with numerous injury issues for several years now, although following a strong pre-season, there are signs he has finally put them behind him.

In truth, fitness is the Belgian’s biggest obstacle to securing the award this season – no other competitor can match the consistent impact of a fully fit De Bruyne over a full season.

Rodri Hernandez

Out of De Bruyne’s City teammates, Rodri is the most likely to pip him to the award, he is offered at 11/2 in the odds. If both play a similar amount of games, then it will be tough for the Spaniard to come out on top individually, although if they do not, then the defensive midfielder’s superior fitness record could be what makes the difference.

Rodri played in almost double the league games to the playmaker last season – 34 compared to 18 – and put up an excellent offensive output with eight goals and nine assists, as well as being a constant in defending transitions.

A host of City players could present themselves as serious POTY challengers during the season, but Rodri rounds out Pep Guardiola’s leading duo, in regard to competing to be the league’s best.

Declan Rice

Declan Rice is the leading non-Manchester City candidate to potentially win the award, offered at odds of 10/1. He was the heartbeat of Arsenal’s team last season as they went agonisingly close to winning the league title, and perhaps he could be the key factor behind them getting over the line this year.

He managed seven Premier League goals and eight assists in 23/24. If he can improve this to double figures in each this time around, then Arsenal could have extra ammunition to possibly become champions and Rice could earn a position as the league’s standout individual.

Ultimately, the PFA POTY award is always a tough one to predict, as injuries or overall team performance can influence a player’s hopes massively.

It would be a surprise if the 24/25 award does not return to a Guardiola-coached player, though with de Bruyne and Rodri the most likely to win the historic award.

Bullets in second FHD final in two years

By Tione Andsen

LILONGWE-(MANA)-FDH Defending Champions, Nyasa Big Bullets Wednesday night marched into the first 2024 Cup final after beating Moyale Barracks 3-1 in a thrilling semi final encounter played at Bingu National Stadium in Area 48 in Lilongwe before a capacity crowd.

Bullets will now face Premier Division side, Blue Eagles in the finals of FDH cup after they had sent off Karonga United packing with a 2-0 win during the first semi-final match played at Civo Stadium in Area 9 in Lilongwe.

Bullets’ prodigal son, Babatunde Adepoju stunned Bingu stadium fans which his solemn effort goal to finish off the games and it was a marvel to watch.

It was balanced affair with both trams creating scoring chances but the physically play of Moyale played to their disadvantage.
With three minutes into the game, Babatunde went into the danger but his shot was blocked by Victor Mwale and four minutes later, Moyale’s Luke Chima had his goal bound shot blocked for a corner.

Moyale’s Chima had another opportunity of taking his side into the lead after 14 minutes but he shot wide and six minutes later was brilliant exchanges by the Kaning’ina boys which involved Charles Nkhoma, Clifford Chimulambe and Boniface Chuma.

Bullets took the lead 1-0 after 21 minutes when Ephraim Kondowe slotted home a Babatunde pass after he had played the ball between tow Moyale defenders, Mwale and Jere.

Five minutes later, prodigal Babatunde had his name on the scoresheet when his cannonball like shot kissed the back of the net leaving Moyale keeper, Olyce Nkhwazi helpless.

At half hour mark, sensing danger, Moyale Barracks pulled out of form midfielder for Chifundo Damba to strengthen their heart of the pack in which Bullets was dominating.

Moyale’s Allan could have reduced the arrears after 45+1 when he shot was craftily blocked with keeper Richard Chimbamba beaten.
The two teams went into break at 2-0.

The second half saw Bullets’ left back was exposed and Moyale capitalized on and it only took seven minutes for Allan to pull one back to make the scores 1-2.

Babatunde has his long range effort flying wide at goal to the excitement of the Bullets faithful’s.

What a goal! At 71 minutes when Babatunde dribbled past Mwale and Jere before providing a dummy over keeper, Nkhwazi before planting home his second and third for his team to make it 3-1.

To consolidate the lead Bullets rested Stanley Billiat for veteran left back, Previous Sambani after 72 minutes and two minutes later they introduced Sean McBrams for Kondowe.

McBrams showed that he has potential to operate right deep inside the central pack where he gave Moyale Barracks defence terrible times.

Four minutes were added but no goal was scored and it ended 3-1 in favour of Bullets.

“Babatunde is back and he is so flexible on the ball and his third goal was a real art of a striker,” Soccer fan, John Jere said.

He said Bullets’s hope is now restored in him and the scoring drought days are being reduced by every game.

Kenya’s Wanyonyi becomes youngest athlete to win 800m Olympic gold medal

Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi won gold in the men’s 800 metres final on the penultimate evening of the Olympics on Saturday.

Wanyonyi claimed a personal best 1:41.19 ahead of world champion Marco Arop of Canada with the bronze going to Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati.

Speaking to journalist after the race, Wanyonyi said he was inspired by the former 800 metres champion David Rudisha who told him that he must win a gold in the Olympics final.

“This race was a lot of pressure for me for this Olympics. I talked with (David) Rudisha yesterday and Rudisha told me ‘you’re supposed to defend this title because Kenyans (won) the event last time in Tokyo (Games). So, I feel it’s a lot of pressure for me so I thank God that I can get it,” said Wanyonyi.

Other athletes namely Masai Russell and Jakob Ingebrigtsen also shared in the glory on the final night of athletics in Stade de France at Paris 2024.

Russell was quickest in the women’s 100m hurdles, finishing ahead of Cyrene Samba-Mayela and Jasmine Camacho-Quinn.

Immediately following, Ingebrigtsen collected his second Olympic gold, finishing strongly in the men’s 5000m, ahead of Ronald Kwemoi and Grant Fisher.

Leading almost from start to finish, Wanyonyi, who was second at the World Championships in Budapest last year, held off the comeback of Canadian Marco Arop, beating him by just one-hundredth of a second (1:41.19 versus 1:41.20)! Behind the duo, Algerian Djamel Sedjati snatched the bronze with a time of 1:41.50.

The 800 meters no longer escapes Kenya. With Wanyonyi’s title, it’s the fifth consecutive time a Kenyan has won the distance at the Olympics, following Wilfred Bungei (2008), David Rudisha (2012, 2016), and Emmanuel Korir (2021).

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Irish Embassy donated MK5.3 million to the Malawi Paralympic Committee on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, to aid in preparing four athletes for the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games later this month.

2024 FDH Bank Cup: Bullets advance to semi-finals through Precious goal

…….Bullets 1-0 Civil

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The FDH Bank Cup defending Champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets survived Civil Service United’s scare in their quest to retain the title after snatching a late 1-0 winner at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday in the quarterfinals.

Substitute Precious Phiri who was introduced in the game in the 88th minute replacing Stanley Billiat found the back of the net at 90+5 minutes from Babatunde Adepoju’s accurate cut-back into the box.

The Nigerian received the beautiful ball from former Civil United midfielder Lloyd Aaron before cutting the ball behind the defenders.

Bullets struggled in the first half as Civil Service United seemed to be well organized, they launched some dangerous attacks at the same time creating chances that they failed to convert into goals.

The People’s team Clyde Senaji’s long-range attempt was saved by a Civil shot-stopper in the 14th minute in the first before Blessings Malinda wasted a clear opportunity for the servants.

He made his way into the box but Richard Chimbamba was equally ready for the task and Bullets was saved.

As the match approached the half-hour mark, Civil continued dominating the play through Muhammad Biason and Chikaiko Batison.

Biason nearly broke the deadlock in the 24th minute when he got the better of Gomezgani Chirwa however his shot missed Bullets’ right-hand side post with a whisker.

Servants kept pushing for the FDH Bank loan but their questions were not answered till the last whistle for the first stanza was blown with the affair still at 0-0.

Second half Bullets came to a changed side and started outplaying Civil Service United but failed to score despite creating numerous chances through Chawanangwa Gumbo, Lloyd Aaron, and Maxwell Phodo among others their efforts were saved by Rahaman John in goals for Civil.

As time fast tick Bullets Tactician Kalisto Pasuwa introduced Precious Phiri who scored the precious goal with the final kick to send Bullets to the semifinals of the cup as soon as the match ended all Civil players lay on the ground in disbelief as they thought the fate will be decided through the post-match penalties.

Big Bullet’s Nickson Nyasulu was later voted player of the match for his outstanding performance.

Bullets coach Kalisto Pasuwa hailed his boys for the win and qualifying for the semifinals of the cup. He acknowledged that his side struggled in the first half but came back stronger in the second half.

In his reaction Civil Service United assistant Coach Wilson Chidati accepted the defeat while describing it as painful, “We created numerous chances but failed to score, they got their chance they scored. That’s football we have to go back and see how we are fair in the league in the second round as we have a rejuvenated squad”.

The Kalisto Pasuwa side who won the cup last season after defeating MAFCO in the final at Bingu National Stadium (BNS) faces Moyale Barracks in the semifinals who defeated Lube Master 2-1 at Mzuzu Stadium on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Central Region Premier division league outfit, Blue Eagles FC was a 3-0 winner against TNM Super League side Baka City at the Karonga Stadium to book a date against Karonga United in the semifinals courtesy of captain Schumacher Kuwali brace and Paul Master strikes in the first half.

The Crocodiles booked their place after defeating MAFCO 2-1 at Chitowe Stadium in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota.

Africa’s fastest man, Omanyala carries Kenya’s hopes for a first Olympic gold in the 100 meters

Ferdinand Omanyala’s status as Africa’s fastest man has many people believing Kenya’s push for Olympic gold medals isn’t entirely a long-distance objective.

The Commonwealth Games 100-meter champion doesn’t want to get ahead of himself, though, despite posting the second-fastest time this season of 9.79 seconds to qualify for Paris at the national Olympic trials.

“I won’t say I am thinking of the final,” Omanyala said. “Of course it’s at the back of my mind but the Olympics has heats, semis and the final so you can’t start thinking about the final when you are not there yet — so many things happen.”

Among the sprinters from African countries who have qualified for the 100 in Paris, including Botswana’s world championship silver medalist Letsile Tebogo and South Africa’s Akani Simbine, Omanyala has run the fastest times.

His comeback from a doping ban imposed in 2017 to becoming the 9th-fastest man of all time has inspired Kenyans and has drawn more crowds to stadiums during national competitions.

His 9.77 personal best, a continental record set in September 2021 in Nairobi, united a nation in celebration and some Kenyans honored him by naming new born babies after him.

His name and image have been emblazoned on some of the graffiti-covered private minibuses, known as matatus, that serve as the main source of public transportation.

So there’s a lot of expectations for Omanyala to be the first man from an African nation to win the Olympic 100-meter title.

The ex-rugby winger has had to reject assertions from critics that he loses his nerve in major global events, owing to his failure to reach the final at the Tokyo Olympics or the podium at last year’s world titles.

Omanyala had been touted by the American sprint legend Michael Johnson as a potential 100-meter champion at last year’s World Championships in Budapest, Hungary but placed seventh in the final. He attributed that to inexperience in dealing with flight fatigue.

He has visibly lost size from his bulging musculature and attributes the changes to his strategy for this Olympics, where he’s aiming to maintain strength but carry a lighter frame in a bid to run faster and also recover quicker between races.

Omanyala is an example of Kenya’s ambitions for success beyond distance running and among the most prominent athletes affected by a doping crisis in a country where more than 200 athletes have been banned over the last seven years.

Kenya has achieved great success in modern distance running, but a wave of positive drug tests has made it one of the sport’s latest doping pariahs.

Omanyala received a 14-month suspension after testing positive for the prohibited substance betamethasone, a ban which could have cost him any chance of representing Kenya again.

He maintains his case was a result of pain medication he received for a back injury and wasn’t intentional doping.

“There are those who do it intentionally,” Omanyala concedes of the doping problem, but he adds: “There are those who eat (contaminated) meat and they end up testing positive; there are those who walk into chemists or medication places and they are given medication that have steroids in them — (those) people you cannot put in the same bracket.

“Don’t judge when you first hear an athlete has tested positive for banned substances, try to hear the story.”

Athletes who are using performance enhancement drugs intentionally are making it difficult for the rest, he said, because any time a Kenyan athlete is running well there will be suspicion that they maybe on performance enhancers.

Barnaba Korir, an Athletics Kenya official, says authorities have ramped up education programs for young athletes across the country to help them understand the implications of doping and avoid it.

Poverty and unemployment are the main factors driving some athletes to use banned substances because they’re trying to pull themselves and their families out of penury, Korir says, and will do so at all costs.

The concentration of talent also means that while some countries can focus testing on a small elite groups, Kenya has hundreds of distance runners capable of competing internationally from middle distance to the marathon.

The scope of events is broadening.

Kenyan sports authorities are hopeful that the inclusion of Omanyala and Alexandra Ndolo — Kenya’s first representative in Olympic fencing — will increase the medal hauls that have traditionally depended on middle- and long-distance runners.

“This is one of the best teams we have ever assembled for the Olympics” Korir said of a Kenya contingent containing 42 track and field athletes, two swimmers, one fencer, one judoka, as well as volleyball and rugby sevens teams.

With a total medal haul of 113 medals, including 35 gold, since first participating at the Summer Games in 1956, Kenya is the continent’s most successful at Olympics.

Omanyala says he wants to leave a legacy in which Kenya produces a world-class sprinter more frequently.

“For the long-distance races, we have an industry in this country,” he said, “so that is what I want to do with sprints.”Source: Africanews
